DAY BEFORE THE SHOW It's noon, the day before my show, and we’ve finished our last fitting, so I’m on the phone with Julius confirming the model lineup. I've never been this ahead of schedule, which is a good thing because there’s still loads to do. Around three in the afternoon friends and family start arriving to help me finish setting up. My friend Shannon helps out with the heavy lifting, and is giddy with excitement when he finds out fellow Aussie Alice Burdeau will be modeling. British import Phil is similarly giddy at the prospect of using a Genie to spray paint our logo by the entrance. He does an awesome job. While everyone else is running around in workwear, my sister, Annick, shows up in a tiny dress with heels and begins art directing the path that the models will walk. Meanwhile, my staff (Ashley, Laura and Stacey, whom I lovingly refer to as The Dream Team) takes care of final alterations and shoe labeling. Around eight, Lindsay and her fantastic assistant, Taylor, finish up collection coordination and finalize the schedule for tomorrow. Right when we’re about to pass out, Kenyon shows up with the latest edit of the music. It sounds fabulous and almost literally brings the roof down (kidding)! ... Florida may have a short list of GOP governors but they'll all be by John McCain's side as he returns to Florida today for his first post-convention visit to the battleground state. Gov. Charlie Crist, Sen. Mel Martinez, former Govs. Jeb Bush and Bob Martinez will be among the headliners campaigning with McCain in Jacksonville, Orlando and Miami today. Only former GOP gov missing is Claude Kirk and for those who prefer a bit more entertainment appeal, they'll also bring along American Idol Finalist Phil Stacey. Go figure. Anyway, McCain will return to the town his family lived when he was a prisoner of war and use his tour to push the crucial veterans vote throughout the state. Veterans for McCain, an organization of 125 retired military officers from across the state whose loyalty to the war hero brought many of them into politics will be out in force Monday at Jacksonville's Veterans Memorial Arena. By contrast, Democrat Barack Obama did not serve in the military, but he spent four years on the Senate Veterans Committee and is not ceding any ground to McCain for the veterans' vote. His network of military supporters is not nearly as deep as McCain's, but the grandson of a World War II veteran has amassed his own contingent of war heroes, most of them recently out of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Ever since America was attacked on 9/11, the Rutherford County (TN) Sheriff Truman Jones saw fit to hold a memorial each year for the victims of that horrible day. This year marks the 7th remembrance, and our own Phil Stacey will be at the Rutherford County Community Fair to perform, along with Grand Ole Opry member Jimmy C. Newman. Phil Stacey is in Shawnee today saying “thank you” in the surest way he knows: through his music. Stacey, the former Shawnee resident turned “American Idol” star turned recording artist, will perform a free concert at 6 p.m. today at Raley Chapel on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University. The show is his way of expressing his gratitude to Oklahomans who have supported his musical ambitions. But the event also will spotlight two local organizations trying to turn back the tide of homelessness in Shawnee. During the show, an offering will be taken for Family Promise and Shawnee Rescue Mission. The two groups marshal local church members and community volunteers to help people who have fallen on hard times. Family Promise is in its fourth year of providing housing and assistance to families who have lost their homes. Families sleep at a different church each week and go to a day center during the day, where they work through their program toward self-sufficiency. After they leave Family Promise, mentoring volunteers keep in touch with them. Patti Marshall, case manager for Family Promise, said the organization is only getting busier in increasingly difficult economic times. With the program’s structure of churches hosting the families and dozens of volunteers providing everything from meals to transportation, Family Promise is an example of faith in action, she said. “In the economy we have now, Family Promise is going to be more i ...
