Nope, not back from vacation yet … But I got this video clip in my e-mail box the other day from my friends at Fox & Friends, who were doing an ’80s week that included a segment on sports heroes of that decade. As a child of the ’80s who included Phil Simms as one of his sports heroes, I felt obligated to post this short clip for you. It’s about what Simms’ kids think of him when they watch his old games: A few other not-included quotes from his interview, courtesy of Fox & Friends: Simms, on the key to playing really well in the Super Bowl as a quarterback: “Playing a defense that’s not that good. That’s the best thing. The Denver Broncos were a good defense, but they weren’t great and we truly, that year, had a great team.” Simms on whether the game is different now than it was in the ’80s: “Yeah it’s definitely different. It’s faster of course. The knowledge, that’s the biggest thing. I probably ran 50 to 60 plays a week when I was playing. Now they have up to 200 plays. They’ve got to learn more like going to school every week. That’s the biggest change to me. That’s the only thing I’m really jealous about quarterback now. I wish I had all those opportunities to do what they’re doing.” ...

In another move which may show the balance of power shifting from HBO, the CBS-owned premium cable channel Showtime has announced longtime football analysts Cris Collingsworth, Phil Simms and James Brown as hosts of Inside the NFL -- which debuts on their channel Spet. 10 after thirty years on rival HBO. Rumors abounded that the cost of getting NFL highlights -- reportedly $8-million a year or so -- led HBO to drop the series earlier in 2008 after three decades on air. Back then, sports analyst Bob Costas called the cancellation a "boneheaded" move, and with Showtime already attracting attention with buzzed-about shows such as Dexter, Weeds, Californication and The Tudors, this is another reason to question the brain trust at Home Box Office. Executives from CBS Sports and Showtime got on the telephone with reporters earlier today to explain the move, which gives football fans one less reason to shell out $18 monthly for HBO and a huge motivation for switching to their rival premium cable network. The open question: does the enormous check the NFL is forcing Showtime to cut worth the extra cachet with subscribers? The press release follows: James Brown, Phil Simms and Cris Collinsworth will host INSIDE THE NFL when the series launches this September on SHOWTIME  The announcement was made today by Matthew C. Blank, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Showtime Networks, Inc. and Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports and Exe ...

Filed under: NFL Media Watch Inside the NFL is the longest-running show on cable TV, but as it moves from its 30-year home on HBO to Showtime this season, it will be hard to recognize. Michael Hiestand of USA Today reports that the only studio panelist from last year who will come back this year is Cris Collinsworth . Dan Marino , who had a long tenure on the show with HBO, will not be invited to migrate over to Showtime. CBS Sports head Sean McManus, who is overseeing the show's transition to Showtime, explains: "We didn't want to just have CBS people. And we wanted a link to the HBO show. It was a tough one, in respect to Dan, to go with Cris." Phil Simms will join Collinsworth in the analyst role. James Brown will get the job of studio host, which Bob Costas has filled in recent years. McManus undoubtedly would have loved to keep Costas around, but Costas's contract with HBO would prevent that. Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

Filed under: Louisville , Big East When you think about compromising pictures of celebrities and athletes being posted on the internet, your first thought is probably the Buzz Bissinger meltdown on Costas Now. When he let loose on Will Leitch partly because of the Matt Leinarht hot tub photos. While those type of pictures can fuel the snarky side of the blogospher, they are intrusive on a persons private life. And before you know it, everyone is pointing and laughing and questioning the athletes morals, etc. Even though we the public would either a) like to be in that situation, or b) do the exact same thing every chance we get. It's not fair that we hold athletes to higher standard off the field, but it happens. But every once in a while someone just begs for it. And that next someone is Matt Simms, quarterback for the Louisville Cardinals. Via Card Chronicle , Simms has bee suspended for four games for a violation of team rules. That's kind of vague until you click on that link above and look at the picture for a second. If you need a closer look, check out the post at KSK . Yes, this is the son of former Giant's quarterback Phil Simms and the brother of NFL quarterback Chris Simms. It's not exactly the proud moment they were looking for. Any hope of matching the commercial success of the Manning family probably just went down the tubes. It's not unprecedented for athletes to use recreational drugs, but knowing when to use a li ...

What did Phil Simms, a suburban New Yorker for three decades and a regular Sunday morning guest of Mike Francesa, think of the "Mike and the Mad Dog" split? I asked him about it Tuesday at the CBS pre-season NFL luncheon: "Is it strange? I guess. But it's like somebody said to me once, 'You know, the NFL is going to change when Dan Marino and John Elway retire.' And I go, 'No, it's not. It'll just keep marching along. It’s the helmet, it keeps moving, it doesn’t matter who’s there.' And I kind of feel that way about the radio show. People love sports talk radio, they’re used to listening to that and they’re going to continue to listen, regardless of who’s there." ...

We can all agree that HBO's "Inside the NFL" certainly had lost its prominence over the last decade. The show's mid-week replays of the previous weekend's NFL games became stale, thanks mainly to the Internet and the influx of other cable shows providing highlights. Now that it's gone from HBO after 31 years, Showtime and CBS Sports are hoping to revive its significance this fall. I'm not sure how. But reportedly, the show's host will be CBS' James Brown , who will replace Bob Costas . USA Today reports that Cris Collingsworth will stay as a studio analyst and that Phil Simms will be added. ...

Filed under: Sports , Celebrities , Reality-Free Will Warren Sapp get that slot on Dancing with the Stars like he predicted? We won't know till next Monday when ABC makes the live announcement on Good Morning America . However, the former defensive lineman for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders has landed a new TV job. Sapp is joining Inside the NFL on Showtime , taking a seat beside fellow former NFL players Cris Collinsworth and Phil Simms, as well as CBS broadcaster James Brown. As a player, Sapp was a force to be reckoned with, albeit as a run stopper in the middle of the line. He also has a reputation for being savvy and a big time talker, a guy who has an opinion about everything and anything. Hmm...smart and loud. That will probably make him a real asset on Inside the NFL . In fact, he might have some of NBA commentator Charles Barkley's charismatic appeal.
