Phil Mickelson gave the Bridgestone Invitational away today. Vijay Singh barely accepted the gift. Two of the best players in the world not named Tiger Woods once again gave us a deeper appreciation of Woods’ consistently impressive closing skills. Mickelson had a one-shot lead stepping to the 15th tee at Firestone and bogeyed three of the last four holes. Singh barely sneaked that last 4-foot putt for par to win into the hole after looking so shaky from short range the last two days. Mickelson may still be No. 2 in the world rankings, but he isn’t looking like the second best player in the game right now. Kenny Perry’s the hottest player on the planet, but he isn’t the second best player in the world, either. If Woods weren’t part of the game, men’s golf would be wide open. That’s how the PGA Championship looks to me this week. (AP photo of Phil Mickelson Sunday at the Bridgestone.) ...

Mickelson used a 5-iron to ace the 190-yard fifth hole at Loch Lomond in a tuneup tournament before next week's British Open at Royal Birkdale. The ball went straight at the pin, landed 12 feet short, bounced once and rolled into the hole. ...
