If the thought of a patch fixing all of Alone in the Dark 's problems had you considering picking up the Xbox 360 title from the cheap bins, think again. When developer Eden started talking up the upcoming PlayStation 3 version, and all of the improvements it would bring to the game, it hinted at the possibility of patching up the original 360 release as well. But if a patch comes, it'll be limited in scope. "We're trying to do it," designer Emile Morel told MTV Multiplayer. "It's technically complicated. The size of a patch is very limited by Microsoft. So if we do a patch it would only be about the new control and the new camera." One of the other changes planned for the PS3 release is a new subway chase sequence. Microsoft, here's the deal. Despite the mediocre reviews the game has gotten, I was planning on picking up the title for the 360 and patch it, especially since it's nicely priced right now. Now, if I ever do end up picking up the game, it will be the PS3 version. Patch size limits may help your server bandwidth, but I just want a better game. Eden Games is making some much needed control, camera and inventory changes to “Alone in the Dark” before it arrives on PlayStation 3. These changes are in direct response to criticisms of the Xbox 360 version. At the Leipzig Games Convention, Eurogamer reported news of a patch so Xbox 360 owners could enjoy the same changes. While checking out the tweaked “Alone in the Dark” in a San Francisco hotel yesterday, game designer Emile Morel couldn’t explicitly promise such a patch was coming. “We’re trying to do it,” said Morel. “It’s technically complicated. The size of a patch is very limited by Microsoft . So if we do a patch it would only be about the new control and the new camera.” Morel says “only” because the PS3 version also includes a new subway chase sequence that would likely be too large to include in just a mere patch. “We can’t promise it because it is still early,” he said. “We are finishing this [PS3] version first. I guess it also depends on the success of this version. If people review it again and said it’s not worth it…” [laughs] Would you reconsider playing “Alone in the Dark” on Xbox 360 if Eden Games delivered the promised tweaks? Atari , one of the oldest companies in the video game business, took an unfortunate turn somewhere in its history and it fell into a dive that was apparent last year. It didn't help that Alone in the Dark 5 ( 360 , PS3 , Wii ) , which was supposed to be one of their bigger games for this year, didn't fare all that well with gamers. However, once former Sony exec Phil Harrison joined the group, things have taken a turn and the company's now headed in a new direction. Atari's parent company Infogrames recently struck a distribution deal with Namco Bandai , in what will eventually become a takeover. What will happen to Atari when that happens? By then, according to execs David Gardner and Harrison, Atari will be "just an online company." Their plan is to have 90 of their products in online gaming within five years. This probably includes online services for the consoles, like WiiWare, XBL, and PSN. They also intend to be a presence in mass market platforms like iTunes and MySpace. My very first console was an Atari, so I don't really know how to take this news. Many old companies have managed to stay on top through the years; Nintendo is a prime example, with the Wii. Hopefully, Atari will be able to revive its golden age in the future as well. Among the many games killed, sold-off or in some sort of nebulous video game purgatory is frightening shooter Ghostbusters. The game made a splash earlier this year with some demo time at a few events, some wayward promotional lanyards and even a bit of time in my house, but since hitting everyone's radar Ghostbusters has essentially vanished. Now we hear that among the publishers looking to snatch up the game is Atari which hopes to not only publish the game but make it the crown jewel of their turn-around. Emails to Phil Harrison (and hassling of the gaggle of clone Harrison running around the tower) have netted us exactly nothing. The official words from Activision are "no comment" so take this one with a grain of salt until things find a bit more solid ground. ...

Filed under: Business Atari's reinvention continues as CEO David Gardner and President Phil Harrison delve into the company's strategy to fully embrace an online business model. Speaking to Develop , the pair expresses the company's necessary geographic expansion outside of France (home of Atari parent, Infogrames), which we're starting to see in the establishment of a UK studio and the hiring of SingStar guru Paulina Bozek . Atari also plans to produce a variety of games for PSN, iTunes, Facebook, Xbox Live Arcade, and to stay, as Harrison puts it, "broadly online distribution agnostic." Gardner quips that he has no programming skills and Harrison says he's not a good graphic artist, so they expect to hire more top talent who believe the future of the industry lies online. The Cleveland Browns have fallen to 0-3 losing to Baltimore 28-10 today. The game was lost in the third quarter when Romeo Crennel's gang was outscored 21-0 as quarterback Derek Anderson was picked off twice, one returned for a touchdown, and a boneheaded penalty on defense. The Browns managed to get the first score of the game on a touchdown as Anderson connected with Jerome Harrison for 7-0 lead. Willis McGahee would answer on 5 yard run for the Ravens on the following position making the game knotted up at 7. The Browns got the final score of the half on a 38 yard field goal by Phil Dawson and went to the locker room with a 10-7 lead. For Browns fans, it was all down the toilet after that. The Ravens used a flurry of scoring, aided by Browns turnovers, in the third quarter. La'Ron McClain scored a pair of touchdowns on short runs while Ed Reed returned a interception for a touchdown and put the game out of reach at 28-10 with their 3 touchdowns in the half. read more ...
