Last week I had the pleasure of chatting to Peter Molyneux, lead designer of Fable II. The video games industry needs people like Peter Molyneux Molyneux has, for some time now, been one of the industry's most inventive and highly-thought of figureheads, with a CV that includes Populous, Black & White and, of course, Fable. Many of y... ...

“The early days were… you could experiment and you could play around, but basically it meant that you wouldn’t eat because you didn’t have any money. [laughs] You could choose from lots to do, you just wouldn’t eat. [Today] I think there are different pressures, but still, the same thing came through is that — [...] ...

If you’re like me, you play morality-filled games as a generally good person the first time around. The second time, you experiment being the bad guy. Stephen Totilo asked “Fallout 3″ producer Todd Howard if he’d solved what Totilo called the “Han Solo Problem,” where it’s seldom as fun to play as a mix of nice guy and bad guy, since games tend to only reward only extreme behavior. Howard claimed “Fallout 3″ hadn’t completely solved it, but “Fable II” designer Peter Molyneux told me last week it will be fun to play as a character with mixed morality in “Fable II” because it’s difficult to be truly good or evil. His team may have solved the “Han Solo problem.” “With Han Solo, how good is good? Can you get as good as Luke Skywalker? Even he wasn’t truly good.” Molyneux explained one way he prevents players from so easily being swayed to being perfectly good when they play the game is through sacrifice. “If you saw a family there and had to kill these bandits to save the family,” he hypothesized, “you’d kill the bandits to save the family. If I said to you, ‘okay, to save this family, you give up half your gold.’ Would you give up half your gold to save the family? Maybe you would, don’t know. The most interesting one is if I said ‘to save that family, you must be horribly, grotesquely scarred and there’s no way of ever removing the scar or the aging.’ What we found is that far, far fewer people were willing to sacrifice that.” The ...

Peter Molyneux is an idea man, his mind constantly spinning. At the end of a brief chat last Wednesday, the “Fable II” designer told me a little bit about what he’s up to after “Fable II” ships next month. “I won’t tell you what we’re doing next; I’m not allowed to,” he smiled. “But it’s a single, [...] ...

Two birds, one stone! Peter Molyneux chats up how he was impressed by Final Fantasy XII and how he's not so impressed (so far) with the PLAYSTATION 3. According the Microsoft employee: I always remember back to Final Fantasy VII , when I first played FFVII , that to me defined the genre... Those were the 'oh my god' moments, I don't believe they exist. I haven't seen many of those on the PS3. But have you seen many of those on the Xbox 360, Peter? He adds: "This is very much me as a gamer talking, not as an industry spokesman. I've got a PS3, a Wii and a 360, I've got just about everything." Just like when Molyneux said that the PS3 was waiting for its "defining title". Molyneux: 'FFVII, that to me defined the genre' [VideoGamer] ...

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360 , Action , RPGs , Interviews With the October release of Fable 2 fast approaching, we sat down for a chat with Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux to talk about how his latest game has shaped up. Also, does he still think the first game was all that bad ? And what does really think about a game he's recently found himself associated with , Too Human ? It all starts off - as we all do - in childhood ... Playing Fable 2 , we noticed that, early on, there seems to be a fair amount of very obvious temptation to do something "good" or "bad." Yes, well, I wanted childhood to contain some fairly easy choices. Once you go through your first real challenge, you'll find that it gets a lot more sophisticated. I want you to just experiment, to just see what happens. What I love is the aspect of, "I wonder if I do this what will happen?" If you do that enough, then you find that the game delivers. Late October is turning out to be an incredibly rich few weeks in the videogame world. I now have in my possession review copies of (what look to be) three of the most exciting games of the year: "LittleBigPlanet," "Dead Space" and "Fable II."(Not to mention "Fallout 3," which I haven't received yet.) Like most such review copies, all three came with information about the game, tips for reviewers to make sure they don't get stuck and see all the best stuff, etc. But "Fable II" comes with something more unusual -- A letter from Peter Molyneux with a specific request for reviewers:I have a favour to ask you -- we build this game not only to appeal to gamers like yourself, but to appeal to anybody. So please, please, please, please, pleae find somebody who doesn't play games, watch them play it and see how their world turns out, because I think it's only when you see those differences that the unique experiences comes through. It's a good suggestion. Then again, I think it's a good suggestion for most games, at least if you're writing for a publication like Variety where a good number of our readers are not avid gamers. On the other hand, I think reviewers (at least for non-core publications) should be able to analyze how a more casual player would experience the game. It's kind of part of the job. And while I sometimes do and probably will in the case of "Fable II" get a casual player to try it out, I can't realistically ask them to ...

After sitting down to play a few hours of Lionhead's Fable sequel, I had a brief couple of minutes to chat up series creator Peter Molyneux . Sitting in perfectly angled leather chairs, legs folded comfortably, we discussed the pacing and production of Fable II, what Lionhead is up to next, and whether he believes video games will ever reach a truly wide audience. Peter Molyneux: Just how many more people is this industry really addressing? I know it's worth 49 billion dollars, but how many people are actually playing our games? How much are we actually affecting the culture compared to what we should be doing? 20 years ago we honestly thought that [large] percentages of the world's population would be playing computer games. And it's not, it's fractions of the world's population. And I think partly it's because we keep making games for these two separate audiences. <a href="http:... ...

And now, they want to talk about it. Molyneux is happy to oblige, talking about the game's moral choices and cooperative gameplay. Molyneux also talks about Fable II 's combat system and how it promotes a sense of community. The interview covers a few other topics, including Molyneux's opinion of Too Human ("Dennis Dyack is going to come and kill me now.") -- and the original Fable -- "For me, going back to Fable is a terrible experience."
