Growing up is hard to do. A tidal wave of angst, embarrassment and unrequited love can all too often leave you locked in your room wailing to Sinead O’Connor. Persepolis is the autobiographical tale of Marjane Satrapi, sharing her experiences as a young girl coming-of-age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. ...

Since at least 2000 Iran has rattled its nuclear sabe r at the world while the U.N. tried in vain to talk to the theocracy about its actual nuclear plans.  Since President Ahmadinejad was elected in 2005, the rattling has only grown louder and more defiant. Of course we know that Iran insists it's an energy platform and nothing more. Threats of sanctions and freezing assets have brought nothing but more rhetoric .  In fact, international concerns about Iran's nuclear motives have caused a larger ripple effect in financial markets worldwide. So far, Iran has remained steadfast in it's insistence that their nuclear aims are peaceful. Until now. In its August issue, National Geographic has a cover story on " Ancient Iran: Inside a Nation's Persian Soul ".  The overall article is interesting, talking about the Persian history of Iran, it's contributions, before the Greeks, to science and medicine. From an historical viewpoint it was fascinating reading. From a current events viewpoint? Even moreso when framed in the context of their own perceived legacy as the world's first superpower. The concepts of freedom and human rights may not have originated with the classical Greeks but in Iran, as early as the sixth century b.c. under the Achaemenid emperor Cyrus the Great, who established the first Persian Empire , which would become the largest, most powerful kingdom on Earth. Among other things, Cyrus, reputedly a brave and humble good guy, fr ...

Just a few weeks ago I was in a car with Tee Bosustow, on the way to an interview for his Toon In podcast. We kicked around a few thoughts on different animated productions, and when I mentioned that I really liked Persepolis , he said he wasn't as enthusiastic about the film. "What?!?" I said. "Let me out of the car right now. You know what? Don't even bother stopping. Just slow down and let me jump out." Okay, so maybe that's not exactly how it went down. For that matter, I don't really remember why he didn't like it as much as I did. But at the time his reasoning struck me enough that I recently re-read the comics in anticipation of the DVD release, which I watched not too long ago, along with all the extras. Here are some of the impressions I came away with: It's always kind of funny when you mistakenly get the DVD with Spanish menus. Catherine Deneuve is at the Persepolis press conference at Cannes and doesn't get asked a question? How is that possible? I suspect that Iggy Pop is incapable of sitting in one place for too long without taking his shirt off. Finally, upon rewatching I think that Persepolis is as much a tribute to Marjane Satrapi's grandmother as it is an autobiography. Never mind the bittersweet ending; from the moment the young Marjane opens her mouth to question authority in school, she's negotiating the principles of self-awareness and honesty to oneself that her grandmother taught her against the realities o ...

This film came highly recommended by a friend, and although animation doesn’t usually attract me I went along. And by God, I’m glad I did. Persepolis is the autobiographical account of the Iranian born Marjane Satrapi; a tale of ordinary growing pains and young adulthood set against a politically charged climate in Iran. Early on Marjane’s parents explain to her how the Shah came to power (allegedly aided by the UK and US in pursuit of oil) and the political message is clear yet easily digestible. Daughter to politically active parents in a divided community she develops strong beliefs and questions those around her; encouraged and inspired by her formidable grandmother among others. The child becomes a teenager with a strong rebellious character and the courage of her convictions – railing against the regime, wearing Iron Maiden t-shirts and questioning the oppression of women. After trouble at school her family send her to Europe for her own protection. In Vienna she struggles to fit in or to find her place in normal society, carrying with her the guilt of knowing what her friends and family suffer at home. Her experiences of familiar issues such as going away and coming home, relationship with her parents, first love and standing up for what you believe in are magnified by the exterior issues of cultural misogyny, war, a divided community and an oppressive regime. Marjane’s story is told with the brutal truth that animation allows, ...
