There are benefits and dangers in a world where the information that is served to the masses is reduced to simple character strings, pattern matches, co-location, word frequency, popularity based on interlinking, etc. But the information chatter that is retrieved is often nothing more than the clutter of hitlists that must be sifted through for the occasional gem, the possible answer to one’s inquiry. The world does not need more popularity-based spamming ... ...

Maybe it is time for John Thain to sell Merrill Lynch after all. On a day when investors sheared another 12 percent from its bloodied shares, his Merrill Lynch moved to shore up its flagging financial situation by issuing new shares and writing down another $5.7 billion in losses. It’s the latest in the desperate days of Thain —who about now must be fondly remembering grappling with NYSE specialists over trading fees—as he has tried unsuccessfully to stop the firm’s balance sheet hemorrhage. After the bell, Mother Merrill said it plans to raise $8.5 billion by issuing new shares and will take a write-down of $4.4 billion in addition to losses as high as $1.3 billion on bad trades, according to the Wall Street Journal . The stock issuance will dilute Merrill shareholders, potentially by as much as 25 percent of its current market cap. Merrill already has recorded $40 billion in write-downs, giving it a spot near to top of the list of credit crisis victims. The write-downs were primarily responsible for last week's $4.65 billion loss at the investment bank, according to the WSJ. Of the new stock, $3.4 billion was bought by Temasek Holdings, the Singapore state investment arm which has already invested $6.2 billion in the stumbling bull of Wall Street. All this comes in the wake of Thain’s resassurances about the things he wouldn’t do. At one point he said he wouldn’t sell off assets (he’s done that, dumping a 20 percent stake in Blo ...

August 6, 2008 6:00 AM Fidgit recently posted a new review of Soldak Entertainment 's single player RPG, Depths of Peril . In the game players take the role of a faction leader protecting the barbarian city, Jorvik. To succeed they must complete quests while competing with rival factions to determine who will rule the city. Fidgit recommends the game as a good diversion until Diablo 3 arrives. From the review: But the really cool part is that while you're out adventuring, so too are heroes from other clans. You all set out from the same town hub, and you all resurrect from the lifestones in your cottages. You'll see your neighbors running around in the world, doing their own things, hacking aside monsters, and sometimes stealing your kills or beating you to quest goals. Sometimes you'll kill each other because clans don't always get along. They bicker and ally and rattle sabers and exchange trinkets, sometimes with you. There's diplomacy system here like you'd expect to find in an epic strategy game. Hey, Defenders of Virtue, how about I sell you this breastplate I don't need? Yo, Treasure Hunters, how about you and me team up against the Brutal Slayers? Hey, Shining Blades, want to get a trade route going to improve our incomes? It was just over a week ago that The Hollywood Reporter   declared that Nottingham , Ridley Scott 's high-profile Robin Hood movie starring Russell Crowe as the Sherriff of Nottingham, had been postponed. Now it appears that the flick could soon be downgraded from "postponed" to "doomed." According to Patrick Goldstein of The Los Angeles Times , Nottingham is battling a three-headed Hollywood hydra of project-killing obstacles: creative issues, scheduling hurdles and problems with its star. The latter refers to Crowe, whose apparent abandonment of his " fight your way to fitness " program has left him a bit too bloated to realistically chase down a swift, svelte medievel crusader for the poor. At best, Goldstein says production on Nottingham could start this October, with the release date pushed to 2010. Considering the project's array of hurdles, a more realistic date might be "never." We're still trying to make sense of the puzzling he-said, he-said regarding Time Warner's (TWX) decision to stop former AOL CEO Jon Miller from taking a seat on Yahoo's board . The latest spin we're hearing from the Time Warner camp: Miller and Yahoo (YHOO) may have misinterpreted "body language" from Jeff Bewkes which made them think they had permission to get out of a non-compete. Whatever. What we do know: We are not going to mess with Jon Miller. Not because of his track record at AOL (for an interesting discussion about Jon's tenure there, check out the back and forth in the comments on our earlier post). But because he can snap us like a twig. At least, that's the impression we get looking that the photos in the March/April 2006 issue of Kung Fu Magazine , where Jon explains his study of Chinese martial arts, which he started up 30 years ago. In the magazine's cover story, Jon spends describes martial arts not as violence but as a way to train himself physically, mentally and spiritually. He sounds like the kind of guy who might take this week's setback in stride. Miller notes that 'Chen Taiji emphasizes extremely high levels of precision taught with tiny corrections that have a big impact. Master Ren is a technician. He knows where/how everything should be and is supposed to work. Everything is very precise.' He notes Chen Taiji's emphasis on precision as 'translating to my work in the business world, where small things that ...

With a government filled with corruption, unsafe schools and an economy centered on its booming illegal drug production, Afghanistan is a country in need of continued help from the U.S. for things to improve, according to Dr. Enayatullah Nasser, a former lieutenant in Afghanistan army’s medical corps. “It’s very unfortunate that security is getting worse day by day,” Nasser, a native of Kabul, Afghanistan, who resides in Akron, told the more than 25 people in attendance at the Tuscarawas County Chapter of the Marine Corps League Tuesday night at Dover Veterans of Foreign Wars. “Our (Afghanistan’s) government is losing control in so many parts of Afghanistan. ... There’s not enough army personnel, (and) the expectations of (Afghanistan’s) people is very high of the government, but the government has failed.” Nasser’s visit at the meeting was organized by his good friend, Edd Wright of New Philadelphia. The two met in Afghanistan in 2003. Wright, a former colonel with Marine Corps, was parachuting with a group of retired paratroopers when one of the men injured his leg and needed medical attention. Nasser was part of a group of doctors who treated the man and was the only one who spoke English. He also had a cell phone, which Nasser said made it possible for the man’s insurance company to be notified about the accident. During his presentation, Nasser said the government cannot meet “the primary needs of its people,” such as securit ...
