Mark Krieger submits: Pep Boys (PBY) shares got absolutely pummeled in an abbreviated week, getting chopped 18% to a new 52-week low of $7.39 before making a feeble comeback to close at $7.56 in a shortened session. To say that this sell-off was "perplexing" is an understatement, as the Dow lost a mere 1.3% for the week, making PBY's "beating" 14 times worst than the DJIA. PBY's beta is nearly flat at 1.06, signifying it should be only 6% more volatile than the overall market. Its relative strength was just horrendous. It is certainly a mystery why the shares lost so much value this past week, especially when PBY issued no news or SEC filings. Its volume was also nothing out of the ordinary, tallying about 10% higher than normal. The shares, in the past twenty years, have only touched prices this low one time, just after 9/11. Kasey Kahne's mood brightened considerably Saturday night. You'll have that in big-time auto racing, especially when you win $1 million and a signature event during the NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Friday, after a practice session for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race that did not go well, Kahne didn't have a lot to be upbeat about. "I didn't feel like we were that good as far as what I was looking for in the car," he said. "That was some anger. I don't know. I just get frustrated. I get down. "Sometimes when you're finishing 10th to 15th, you feel like you're battling the car a little bit more than everybody is battling the car these days, that you're further off than you think you are." His Saturday started with the Sprint Showdown, a preliminary for drivers not qualified for the main event, and his fifth-place finish wasn't enough to advance. However, a fan vote put Kahne in the field, and he won the 24th running of the all-star race. That pepped Kahne up. "Winning tonight, I am already looking forward to next weekend's (Coca-Cola) 600," he said. "It gets me excited to come back to the track next week. It's good for myself and I know it's good for the team and the guys who work on the car. "They need to win once in a while. They're putting in so much time, so many hours, and it pays off. We won a really big race tonight." After fans gave Kahne the chance to race, he moved up from the 24th starting spot to seventh by the end of the third ...

With stocks plummeting across the world, the White House has decided its time to send George Bush out to give us a Pep talk. I doubt he will tell us to stop whining, but the guy who was a cheerleader at Andover must be pretty pissed off that he has to end his Presidency in the same stupid business. It doesn't really matter what he says, because the U.S. economic freefall is not something he can do anything about. Take the dollar. British governments bonds are yielding 5% (Euro Bonds 4.5%) while U.S. Treasuries yield 2%. This simple fact is why the dollar is in freefall and oil costs us more everyday. In his congressional testimony this morning, Fed Chairman Bernanke talked about the banks need to rebuild capital, but as Bloomberg pointed out yesterday , even the biggest banks are in far more trouble than their balance sheets would indicate. At an investor presentation in May, Citigroup Inc. Chief Executive Officer Vikram Pandit said shrinking the bank's $2.2 trillion balance sheet, the biggest in the U.S., was a cornerstone of his turnaround plan. Nowhere mentioned in the accompanying 66-page handout were the additional $1.1 trillion of assets that New York-based Citigroup keeps off its books: trusts to sell mortgage-backed securities, financing vehicles to issue short-term debt and collateralized debt obligations, or CDOs, to repackage bonds. Way back in January we warned about the Shadow Banking System , the $500 Trillion of off ...

Weekly inventories numbers reported later today could have an impact on oil prices. Then there is continued optimism in the financial sector, which caused the rally Tuesday. Also, a bill aimed at helping the housing market will reach the House floor. But once again earnings will likely have investors' attention with Costco already giving a profit warning. Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST ) shares are plunging over 8% in premarket trading after the wholesale retailer warned its August-ending quarter's profit would miss analyst estimates. This is most surprising as Costco had been one of the retailer that seemed to have benefited from consumers trying to save and buy lower-cost items. But Costco blamed the lower profit on rising energy costs, saying it will earn less than $1 per share. Washington Mutual Inc. (NYSE: WM ) late Tuesday reported second-quarter results , posting a loss of $3.3 billion, was worse than analysts had anti ...

The city of Massillon has planned a Pep rally for Monday, July 21 at 6 p.m. inside Paul Brown Tiger Stadium for ESPN’s first-ever “TitleTown USA” search. That will also be the same time that ESPN will be in town to film a segment about the history and tradition of Massillon sports, most notably high school football. The segment is scheduled to air on Wednesday, July 23 on the 6 p.m. edition of SportsCenter and it will re-air at 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. the same night “We need to get fired up,” Massillon athletic director Tim Ridgley said. “We need to get our people to support us.” The Pep rally will feature Massillon head football coach Jason Hall as well as the Tiger Swingsters and Massillon cheerleaders. There is no charge for admission. There will also be 7-on-7 varsity and junior varsity team scrimmages during the rally. Ridgley said the event will take a lot of work to put together but that the national recognition from ESPN is worth it. “I’m more worried about getting this off without any glitches,” Ridgley said. “We want to present this to the country in the right manner. We’ll need the support of a lot of people.” Fans will be able to vote for the city of Massillon on ESPN.com from July 24-26. The winner of the 2008 “TitleTown USA” search will be announced on July 27 at 11 p.m. The taped segments about each city will also air on ESPN Classic (SportsCentury) from 2-6 p.m. leading into ESPN’s SportsCenter profile during the 6 p.m. show. ...
