By David Gutierrez (NaturalNews) The 2007-08 flu vaccine was only 44 percent effective, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has admitted in a study published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report , making the flu season the worst since 2003-04. Flu vaccines are formulated based on health officials' educated guesses about which strains of the virus are most likely to be circulating in a given year. Three of these strains are picked for inclusion in the vaccine. When officials guess correctly, the vaccine is usually between 70 and 90 percent effective. This past year, however, most flu infections were caused by a Type A H2N2 Brisbane strain that was not included in the vaccine. Another common infectious agent was a Type B Florida strain. According to data collected by the Marshfield Clinic in central Wisconsin, the 2007-08 flu vaccine was only 58 percent effective against the Brisbane strain and totally ineffective against the Florida strain. Researchers usually measure the severity of a flu season by comparing either adult or child mortality data. By both measures, the 2007-08 season was the worst in three years. In the 2003-04 season, the flu vaccine also failed to function at peak effectiveness, due to the primary infectious agent for that year not being included. As of the time of the study's conclusion, 66 children had died from the 2007-08 flu season, compared with 153 in 2003-04. Similarly, adult death from fl ...

A 33 year old woman in Wisconsin was arrested this week because she had enrolled in a local high school attending cheerleading practices before school and even attended a pool party at the cheerleading coach’s home. The woman, who has a history of identity theft crimes, has a 15 year old daughter who lives in Nevada with her grandmother, the woman’s mom. The woman stole her own daughter’s identity to enroll in school and when arrested, stated that she had wanted to get a diploma and be a cheerleader because she had missed out on that portion of her life. Her teachers indicated that she was not good at math, well I am. 33 minus 15 is 18, so if she missed graduating or being a cheerleader, it’s her fault for taking that time and doing something else. This lady faces up to 10 years in jail. ...

Between Maureen Dowd and Jim Shea, their columns (Sept. 6, Page B-5) sound like they're trying to see which one can throw the most mud at John McCain's campaign. I did not originally support McCain for many reasons (mostly his inappropriate legislation regarding 12 million aliens living illegally in the United States). However, his willingness to reconsider on a few issues, to listen to reason, and mostly his quest to serve his country have shown that he is worthy of my support. ...

Ever watch a restaurant staffer sneeze and sniffle while they handled your food? That server or fry cook probably belonged to the 75% of low-wage workers nationwide who don't receive paid Sick days. Now, just in time for Labor Day, the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago has released results of a survey in which 86 percent of respondents said paid Sick days should be required by law. Funded by the Public Welfare Foundation in Washington, D.C., the survey revealed that 68 percent of workers without paid Sick days reported going to work with the flu or some other contagious illness. (Then again, 53% of the workers polled who did receive paid Sick days also showed up on the job while Sick. Pressure from the boss, maybe?) One in six workers say they or a family member has been punished, threatened, suspended or fired by an employer due to illness. Achoo on that for size. ...

I started FSnet, the food safety news, shortly after the Jack-in-the-Box outbreak in Jan. 1993. Sure, Al Gore hadn’t invented the Internet yet, but those of us in universities had access, and I started distributing food safety stories. It all seems sorta quaint now, what with Google alerts and blogs and RSS feeds, but my goal was straightforward: during the Jack-in-the-Box outbreak, a number of spokesthingies said, they didn’t know E. coli O157:H7 was a risk, they didn’t know that Washington State had raised its recommended final cooking temperature for ground beef, they didn’t know what was going on. So FSnet was conceived and made widely available so that no one could legitimately say, they didn’t know. Yet that’s exactly what federal bureaucrats in Canada said last night when questioned about the delay in warning those in southwestern Ontario that lettuce from Aunt Mid’s in Detroit, implicated in a large Michigan-based E. coli O57:H7 outbreak that has stricken at least 34, had made its way across the border. And now at least two People in Ontario have tested positive for the same strain of E. coli O57:H7. David Musyj, president and chief executive officer of the Windsor (Ontario) Regional Hospital, said last night that authorities in Michigan issued a public-health alert about the link to Aunt Mid’s iceberg on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, but the Canadian Food Inspection Agency didn’t bother notifying Windsor health officials until Wedn ...
