From friends to family members remembering Rodney Wood after his funeral on Friday, the same message was heard - keep his legacy alive by helping each other - and by working together to make Hannibal safer. Wood was described as a hero for losing his life Aug. 10 after stopping on his way home to help a woman who was under attack. Paul Haynes, one of the more than 50 people serving in the Patriot Guard Avenue of Flags at Grand View Burial Park, had never met Wood but came from De Soto to honor him because, “he’s a hero for what he did.” At Wood’s funeral, the Rev. Chris Combs challenged the capacity crowd filling the James O’Donnell Funeral Home to honor Wood’s legacy as “a loving, servant heart.” Combs suggested two ways to this: Try to be more like Wood and also help his family. “Let’s get involved in one another’s lives and get to know our neighbors,” Combs said. “Let’s band together and make our neighborhood safe. Let’s take this love and energy and outpouring of compassion that has been poured out on this family and channel it out in the community and change the community in which we live, so no other family has to go through this again. “It’s up to us to determine what kind of community we live in,” Combs continued. “Rodney did not stop in that situation with the expectation of losing his life, but because he was the person he was, it happened.” Noting that “thousands of people came through this funeral home for the visitat ...

On behalf of the entire Hillside School community we thank you for the wonderful article on the life of Frank King (One of our finest: Marlborough vet dies at 91," Aug. 6). We join so many Marlborough friends in mourning our loss of such a good friend. Your article captured so much of the inspirational life Frank led. However, once important aspect of Frank's life was not highlighted, that of his life as a Hillside School student. Frank was our oldest living alumnus, having graduated from Hillside in 1931, just four years after Hillside moved from Greenwich, MA to our present Marlborough campus. During my 10 years as headmaster, Frank was a regular attendee of various Hillside events. He loved reconnecting with other alums and greatly enjoyed telling our current students about his Hillside experiences. Frank was a beloved member of our community; we remain proud to count him as one of "us" and we are deeply saddened by his passing. We will always remember Frank's devotion to Hillside School and his wonderful smile! DAVID BEECHER, Headmaster Hillside School, Marlborough ...

BUSHYHEAD — One hundred and one feet. That's how much of a head start the team ropers give the cattle at Clem McSpadden's Labor Day Pasture Roping held at the Tub Handle Ranch at Bushyhead. Why 101 feet? Because McSpadden had heard of a pasture roping in Texas with a 100-foot score, or head start. "I wanted Oklahoma to be better, so I made it one hundred and one,” he said years ago with a big grin. That was Clem McSpadden. He was an Oklahoman through and through, no matter where his boots carried him — the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. read more ...
