QUESTIONING Barack Obama's Patriotism has become one of John McCain's most popular talking points . When we adopted the surge, we were losing the war in Iraq, and I stood up and said I would rather lose a campaign than lose a war. Apparently Sen. Obama, who does not understand what’s happening in Iraq or fails to acknowledge the success in Iraq, would rather lose a war than lose a campaign. Speaking before a convention of veterans yesterday, Mr McCain made a similar statement, accusing the Democratic candidate of supporting "retreat and failure" in Iraq. Speaking before that same convention today, Barack Obama pushed back . One of the things that we have to change in this country is the idea that people can't disagree without challenging each other's character and Patriotism. I have never suggested that Senator McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America's national interest. Now, it's time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same. No word yet from Mr McCain, whose campaign did respond to other portions of the speech. It should be noted that the McCain campaign has acknowledged Mr Obama's Patriotism in the past. "We don't want to talk about his Patriotism and character," said Charlie Black , a McCain adviser, back in July. "We concede that he's a patriot and person of good character." Perhaps he needs ... Using the old partisan playbook We've hypothesized all along that Obama cannot take a punch. We've had evidence all along that this is the case. Now, let's go on and call it proof positive. First, Obama has had to use distorted McCain quotes in attack ads designed to scare voters about McCain's economic policies. It's no wonder considering polls now show McCain running ahead of Obama on the economy. Second, Obama has resorted to Kerryesque claims that McCain questions Obama's Patriotism. "If we think that we can use the same partisan playbook where we just challenge our opponent's Patriotism to win an election, then the American people will lose. The times are too serious for this kind of politics. The calamity left behind by the last eight years is too great." Senator Obama, I'd submit that if John McCain were to question your Patriotism, you'd be in a world of hurt because John McCain knows Patriotism. But Senator, John McCain has not questioned your Patriotism, he has questioned your judgment. I realize you think doing so makes one a dirty racist and apparently now judgment equals Patriotism. That did not fly with John Kerry and it won't fly with you either. I do hope McCain punches back against this charge as hard as he punched back when you said he was playing the race card. And I'd note the irony of you referencing "the same partisan playbook" of, you know, the "politics of old." (A) Senator Obama selectively edits quotes of ... I was beginning to wonder if any of the USA Olympians new the words to our National Anthem. A new Greenberg Quinlan Rosner poll finds that more Americans rate Sen. John McCain as patriotic (74%) than Sen. Barack Obama, (56%). However, when Obama "frames his idea of Patriotism in terms that call on America to live up to its ideals and promise, respondents prefer his Patriotism-centered argument over McCain's more traditional patriotic framing by 11 points." ...
