Patricia Clarkson: Recent roles have her rolling around with the likes of Javier Bardem and Ben Kingsley and working with Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese. "INTIMACY is seductive," says husky-voiced Patricia Clarkson. "It's at times what I remember most about films; those moments I feel I should not have witnessed." ...

Reports around the Web noting that "Elegy" just became the second DVD screener sent to Oscar voters fail to mention one important thing. It wasn't sent to the full academy membership — like "Frozen River," the first screener out this year. "Elegy" was sent only to the actors' branch. And while its PR reps declare "Elegy" to be a rival in the races for best actor (Ben Kingsley), actress (Penelope Cruz) and screenplay, etc., it's especially ballyhooed for two supporting performances. Entertainment Weekly (which gives "Elegy" an A grade) says Dennis Hopper is so convincing that he "makes you believe that he's a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet." USA Today declares Patricia Clarkson "excellent" as the "self-sufficient longtime lover" of Ben Kingsley, who portrays an aging college professor fond of seducing students (like Penelope Cruz). Granted, USA Today and other media heap praise on Kingsley and Cruz, too, but the leads haven't been able to generate so much kudos buzz. Kingsley won best actor already (best picture champ "Gandhi," 1982) and Cruz will certainly be nominated in, and possibly win, this year's race for best supporting actress for Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." If "Elegy" was really being pushed for screenplay, the DVD screener would've been sent to the writers' branch. It wasn't. Photos: Dennis Hopper, Patricia Clarkson. Credits: Samuel Goldwyn Co. ...

Vicky Cristina Barcelona Woody Allen's comedy explores the tangled desires of two young Americans and the locals they meet during one summer in Barcelona. Woody Allen's latest comedy drama marks both a return to form, and a return to the themes of impulsive romance at which he excels, this time transposed to an appropriately seductive Barcelona. The heroines of Allen's Americans abroad story are Vicky (Rebecca Hall), an earnest graduate student who specialises in Catalan culture, and Cristina (Scarlett Johanssen), her dilettantish friend. Whilst spending the summer in Barcelona with Vicky's cousin (the wonderful Patricia Clarkson), they encounter a laid back Latin seducer, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), a free-spirited artist who invites them to spend a weekend away with him. He and Cristina seem made for each other, but events take a surprising turn, causing complications for all concerned. These grow even more involved when Juan Antonio's tempestuous ex-wife Maria (Penélope Cruz) enters the picture. The intricacies of romance and passion are played out against a backdrop of sun-drenched Barcelona landmarks, and renowned Spanish cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe makes the city and cast look equally alluring. Rebecca Hall, faultlessly playing American, is tremendous as the archetypal Allen lead, all hesitation and uptight uncertainty, and Scarlett Johanssen is a suitably more languid foil. Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz get to send ...

Filed under: Comedy , Documentary , Drama , Foreign Language , Independent , New Releases , Columns , Cinematical Indie , Indie Spotlight Do I smell like Toronto? That's because I just got back from the film festival they have up there, and the scent of independent film still lingers. (It smells like Patricia Clarkson.) So I am very much in the mood for this week's edition of the Indie Spotlight , which is all about what's opening beyond the multiplexes this weekend! Six flicks hit the big screen today: Flow: For Love of Water , Forgiveness , Greetings from the Shore , Moving Midway , Proud American , and Towelhead . Here's the scoop on each of them. Towelhead What it is: A dark comedy from Six Feet Under creator (and American Beauty writer) Alan Ball, based on Alicia Erian's novel about an adolescent Arab-American girl living in Texas during the first Gulf War. What they're saying: Cinematical liked it when it premiered at Toronto last year under the title Nothing Is Private . At Rotten Tomatoes , the critics are split 50/50 as I write this, some applauding its audacity and wit, others calling it reprehensible. (Personally, I'm in the first camp.) Where it's playing: New York City (Angelika Film Center, AMC Loews Lincoln Square), Los Angeles (ArcLight Hollywood, The Landmark), and Garland, Texas (Walnut Theaters). I assume the random Texas location is because the film was shot there? Maybe? More info: The official site has a list of ...

I have been watching a lot of movies lately, thank to Netflix. A few were really good, and I love to share so ... Apocalypto: Wow. I was really blown away by this movie and the amount of work that must have gone into producing this film must be staggering. Set in ancient Mayan lands, Apocalypto tells the story of Jaguar Paw and his tribe who are torn from each other when a band of raiders set upon their village. Jaguar Paw is marched to a distant city while his wife and child are stranded in a deep well near the village. He must escape his captors and return to rescue his family. The city scenes are horrifying and captivating; the characters are beautiful, terrifying and exotic. A visual stunner with an exciting journey story. The Station Agent: Finn (a person of short stature played by Peter Dinklage) inherits a train station in rural New Jersey and moves there with the intention of leading a life of solitude. He is instantly befriended by a snack-truck driver (a very chatty and hilarious Bobby Cannavale), a grieving artist (Patricia Clarkson) who is barely holding her life together and the local library clerk (Michelle Williams). This touching and funny film is about friendship, lonliness and acceptance. The Counterfeiters: Set in a WWII concentration camp, The Counterfeiters is a true story about a underground operation using captive Jews in a Nazi counterfeiting scheme. The men are tasked with creating fradulent pounds and dollars ...

Environmental lawyer Alice Kryzan has won a shocking primary upset in a heated Democratic primary in the Conressional district held by retiring GOP Rep. Tom Reynolds. Kryzan upset the two other candidates who garnered far more attention as they savaged each other. Democratic party leaders had bet Iraq war veteran Jon Powers would emerge victorious over millionaire Jack Davis on the way to taking the district away from Republicans. The 26th congressional district stretches from the outskirts of Rochester, including all or parts of Greece, Wheatland, Riga, Ogden, Sweden, Parma, Clarkson, Hamlin and Chili, to the Buffalo suburbs and has been represented for 10 years by Reynolds. He is a GOP power broker whose fortunes fell along with that of the national and state party. In other local races: State Senate 62nd District (Republican): George D. The following three dvds are currently on order. Holds are piling up quickly, so get your name on the list: The Promotion . Two managers in a Chicago supermarket vying for the same promotion (Seann William Scott and John C. Reilly) each show their ugly side in this low-key but very funny take on one side of the corporate world. Then She Found Me . Helen Hunt both directs and stars in this film about a divorced woman (Hunt) who meets her birth mother (Bette Midler) after her adoptive mom dies. Also on the scene are Matthew Broderick (her ex) and her dvorced dad (Colin Firth). Hunt does a great job portraying April who must deal with enormous changes, showing all her rough edges. Married Life . Chris Cooper plays Harry who decides he must kill his wife played by Patricia Clarkson so that she will not suffer when he leaves her for a younger woman. But the plot thickens when Harry's friend, Richard falls for the same woman and plans go awry. ...
