IMOVIO has launched a new cellphone-sized computer that is aimed at something similar to the subnotebook market. While it doesn't have 3G of its own, it does have a QWERTY keyboard, wifi, and a $175 price point. "It can connect to the Internet using a standard Wi-Fi connection, or it can use your cell phone's mobile broadband connection via Bluetooth. The company is currently pitching it to mobile network operators and retail stores. It's being compared to the ill-fated Palm Foleo. But the comparison doesn't work because the Foleo was Palm-phone only, didn't fit in a pocket and cost well over three times the price of the iKIT. Read more of this story at Slashdot. ...

Filed under: Cellphones , Laptops You were looking for a laugh to start your Columbus Day / Canadian Thanksgiving Day / etc. off, weren't you? Consider yourself lucky. OLO Computer is reportedly thinking of bringing to market a netbook-styled device that would actually enable (require?) users to plop their iPhone / iPhone 3G into the Palm rest; from there, the handset would act as the brains of the operation and double as a trackpad. At the present time, there are no real specifications to speak of -- just a zany teaser page and lots of speculation. We shouldn't have to remind you what an epic failure the whole "cellphone companion" sector has been, as one look at Palm's axed Foleo and the deeply discounted Celio REDFLY should be explanation enough. Hey, we're not trying to discourage you from giving this a go, OLO, but we'd probably have a backup plan ready to roll in case Apple itself drops a netbook on the world in the next 48 hours . Filed under: Laptops Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , a column about consumer technology. A special note this week; this post marks the fourth year of Switched On columns for Engadget, and we'd like to give a big thanks to Ross for all his hard work and intriguing ideas. We're looking forward to the next four! -ed. Palm's abandoned Foleo had a split personality. It was positioned as a smartphone companion, but it was also a new platform. Consumers expected to pay less for the former and saw no need for the latter. But the idea of a small, inexpensive notebook computer certainly struck a chord and now many major PC manufacturers sell Linux and Windows-based " netbooks " that generally start at $499 or less. They are even starting to migrate toward the 10-inch screens that Foleo champion Jeff Hawkins promoted as ideal for accommodating a full-sized keyboard. However, ceci n'est pas une Foleo . While the big boys have pursued one part of the Foleo's promise, Celio Corp. is taking on the other part. The REDFLY "smartphone terminal" (a description that leaves no doubt off the bat that this is currently an IT-focused product) looks like a small notebook PC, but it does not have any processing capabilities of its own.Instead, it uses the operating system and wireless connectivity of a growing list of supported Windows Mobile smartphones. Wrapped in a smooth rubbery plum coating, its industrial styling includes an 8.3-inch ...

If you’ve heeded Oprah’s call and got yourself an Amazon Kindle, or you’ve had one for quite some time, then you’ll be pleased to know about the Periscope Lighted Folio. This accessory makes it so you can keep your Kindle lit up, even when trying to get through a few chapters in the dark. One of the most common misconceptions about the Amazon Kindle is that it is backlit. In fact, it’s not backlit at all because it uses an E-Ink display. This makes it much easier on the eyes, but it also makes it impossible to read in the dark. The Periscope Lighted Folio is a new accessory that features a twin LED light that can be retracted into the folio when not in use. The folio is 5-inches by 8-inches and will fit the Kindle perfectly. There is also a pen pocket. The device comes with 3 AA batteries and you can get an optional AC adapter as well. Covered in black leatherette, the Folio sells for $49.95 and is available now. Are you ready for the unholy matrimony of two of the year's biggest technology trends? That's right - soon you'll be able to turn your iPhone into a Eee PC-style netbook. Simply slot your iPhone into the space where the trackpad normally sits, and then enjoy all your applications with a full mechanical keyboard and 8.9" screen. It's a little bit reminiscent of the ill-fated Palm Foleo , which could have been the first netbook, but was instead cancelled after a wave of criticism along the lines of "but no-one would want to carry a tiny notebook computer around!". I bet Palm are cursing the Eee PC every day... ...

One of the regular concepts we see over at iPhoneBuzz is Apple slotting the iPhone 3G into the Palm-rest of a MacBook and making it serve double-duty as connectivity and multitouch trackpad. When it’s attributed to Apple it’s pretty laughable; when a third-party claims to be doing it, as is the case with OLO Computer , you fall off the scale into hilariously unlikely. OLO Computer’s concept is a netbook (with strikingly MacBook Air-style design) into which you drop your iPhone 3G whereupon it grants internet access and control. It’s unclear whether OLO envisage the iPhone powering everything - which would make the OS X screenshot on the mock-up’s display a little confusing, as that’s not the OS the iPhone runs - or if it would be a standalone device with its own software. The inevitable comparisons are being made to the ill-fated Palm Foleo and the recently-price-scythed Celio RedFly ; the former didn’t make it out of the prototype stage, while the latter has required a 60-percent price cut (to just $199) in order to sell. Of course, with specs, pricing, proof-of-concept (and just about everything else we’d like to see) missing from the OLO website, color us sceptical. HTC have announced the release date for their Touch HD smartphone . The Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro device, which has a 3.8-inch WVGA 800 x 480 touchscreen with haptic feedback, a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and 3G HSDPA, will be available in Europe come November 6th. Other specs include GPS, a front-facing VGA camera for video messaging, WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support and a microSDHC card slot. In a pleasant change for HTC, the Touch HD also includes a 3.5mm headphone socket. Earlier this month , HTC disappointed US would-be Touch HD owners by revealing that the handset would not get an official release outside of Europe and Asia. The smartphone lacks US-spec 3G band support, without which it would be limited to EDGE speeds at most (unless in a convenient WiFi hotspot), and HTC predicted that by the time they had engineered a new version the handset would be outdated. The MRSP for the HTC Touch HD is €649 ($881). IDG had a recent opportunity to chat with Palm founder Jeff Hawkins , and the interview focuses squarely on the netbook market. While I'm of the opinion that the small notebook market is pretty well defined, it looks like Hawkins still feels there's a market for a Foleo-like device. At least that's how I'm reading it based on these excerpts: "IBD: When Foleo was announced critics questioned this category. What's your thinking about it now? Hawkins: As far as I know the category hasn't taken off yet, but there's interest in it. My opinion has been pretty consistent... I'm a frustrated computer user -- I don't particularly like using computers. I was very excited about Foleo and I'm still excited about the category. And I never lost any of my excitement for it, even though Palm decided not to launch the Foleo.... If anything, my career has shown me that there's a demand for simplicity and size reduction. I'm still convinced it's a great category ready to really take off." At first I thought Hawkins was talking about the netbook category, but upon a second review, I'm not so sure. What's interesting to me is the timing of this interview since we recently shared news that Celio's REDFLY was now available for consumer purchase . Many commenters indicated that it was too late for such a device to be successful and that the price was too high when compared to netbooks. Remember, the REDFLY is very similar to the Foleo concept with two m ...
