JOEL BEININ Professor of Middle East History, Stanford University Giving a Report and Update from the Middle East Part of the "Other Voices" televisions series. Joel Beinin, one of the country's leading experts on the Middle East and a frequent guest on "Other Voices", has spent the past year in Egypt, where he served as Director of the Middle East Studies Program at the American University in Cairo. As we welcome Joel back to the area, we’ll talk to him about his experiences living and teaching in Egypt, as well as getting an update on his particular area of expertise: the Israel-Palestine conflict. We’ll explore the current status of the "peace process", Israel’s increasing tensions with Iran and Syria, and the internal political turmoil in Israel. Reporting by Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz concerning violence by Israeli settlers has touched off some discussion of the issue. Ha’aretz writes today that “ police, soldiers and military officers prefer to ‘turn a blind eye’ instead of handling incidents in which settlers attack Palestinians in the West Bank.” Security forces have complaints regarding Palestinian actions as well, but they are concerned with a sharp uptick in violent incidents initiated by settlers in the first half of 2008. Police and IDF committees are looking into the problem and promising greater coordination, but it seems they have a deep-set structural problem on their hands. Given how important the issue of settlements and settlers is to the peace process, and how violence between settlers and Palestinians can inflame tensions, the culture of passivity in the face of settler violence is cause for major concern. The BBC provides some more background , and also notes that Israel has postponed the expected evacuation of the settlement of Migron, in the West Bank. No new date has been set. Migron has a population of about 200, and is the largest of about 100 Jewish settlements established without Israeli government permission. As the article notes, All settlements in the West Bank are considered illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this. This morning, in Beijing I got to watch Taiwan/Chinese Taipei's best gold medal hope - Chu Mu Yen (a taekwando fighter who has the fearsome nickname "The warlord of Taiwan").
