WASHINGTON (AP) - Whoever was to blame, the U.S. airstrikes that may have killed friendly fighters in Pakistan have inflamed the already touchy relations between Washington and Islamabad and could set back the struggle to stem violence along the Afghan Border. The bombings fueled anti-U.S. sentiment in Pakistan and raised fresh questions about cooperative efforts to root out terror suspects in the lawless region that American military leaders believe could spawn a new major attack against this country. ... U.S. airstrikes into Pakistan that may have accidentally killed allied fighters are embroiling the already fragile relations between Washington and Islamabad over how to stem violence along the Border. U.S. officials say three aircraft launched about a dozen bombs into Pakistan after militants attacked coalition forces in a wooded area near a checkpoint. Conflicting reports about the Tuesday clash were being sorted out by the U.S. military. But the Pakistani army said Wednesday the airstrikes killed 11 Pakistani paramilitary troops. In a statement, coalition forces said they were fired on by anti-Afghan insurgents and returned fire. U.S. forces said they then used unmanned drones to follow the insurgents, then fired on them. It was not clear if the jets crossed into Pakistan's airspace. ... Source: www.vanityfair.com --- 28 days ago
