Adam "Pacman" Jones, who dabbled in professional wrestling last year, has some big plans for beach volleyball. Mr. Jones and Dallas Mavericks forward Brandon Bass are teaming up to host the First Annual Celebrity Volleyball Beach Battle on Sept. 13 at the Yucatan Beach Club in Coppell. Bradie James, Martellus Bennett, Isaiah Stanback, Deon "Cricket" Anderson, Anthony Henry, Evan Oglesby and a few other Mavericks will also participate in the tournament. Each celebrity will play on a team with four fans. The cost is $2,500 per team, with proceeds going to the Brandon Bass Reach Back Foundation. Tickets will be sold for $10 (adults) and $5 (children). Adam "Pacman" Jones had some sleep in his eyes and a smile on his face at the Charity Church in Fort Worth this afternoon. It'd have been nice to relax on the Cowboys' first full day off since training camp started, especially since the team's charter plane landed at about 4 a.m. this morning. But he made a commitment to help give away 1,500 backpacks loaded with school supplies to needy kids, who also got autographs from Deion Sanders and Pacman. So Pacman hopped in the passenger's seat of Deion's Cadillac Escalade and made the trip from Prosper to a rough Fort Worth neighborhood, hoping he could brighten some kids' lives and serve as an example of perseverance and redemption. "Anything for the kids," Pacman said. "If it would have had something to do with some adults, I probably would have changed my mind." OK, the skeptics are surely thinking that the charity appearance was just some late touching up on Mr. Jones' image. After all, commissioner Roger Goodell will make a decision soon about whether to fully reinstate the cornerback who was suspended last season. Seeing that got Patrick Crayton's competitive juices pumping, and he matched the total the next day. But Crayton still hasn't approached the unofficial world record. Pacman claims that he's caught eight punts without putting a ball down before. The key, according to Pacman, is to be picky about which punts you catch. Adam "Pacman" Jones worked at left CB with the first-team defense tonight. Wade Phillips said after practice that Pacman would start there Friday night against the Texans. "I just think he needs to play, and he's shown he can play," Phillips said. "He had a good game last week and needs some more." First-round pick Mike Jenkins started at left CB the first two preseason games. Jenkins will continue to play on that side in the substitution packages with Pacman moving across the field. Phillips said he'll evaluate things game-by-game at cornerback, but it's pretty clear that Pacman will start if Terence Newman doesn't recover from a groin pull as anticipated. Adam "Pacman" Jones' suit might have been the highlight of the Cowboys Kickoff Luncheon, a classy event that did a lot of good for the Happy Hill Farm. Let me do my best to describe this suit. It was brownish-gray with blue fabric that covered the shoulders. And there was a Cowboys star on the right sleeve with a 21 in it. Oh, and the suit had a hood. Yes, you read that right. His suit had a hood. The suit was so, um, unique that Brad Sham had Pacman stand up and show it off after each player was introduced to the crowd. "He's the first guy I ever remember who found a way to incorporate the team colors and the logo and his uniform number into your outfit," Sham said from the dais. "Props to you, brother. Arvin Kenti Edwards' lawyer on Tuesday accused Jones of falsely identifying Edwards as the shooter in the February 2007 shooting outside the Minxx strip club during NBA All-Star weekend in Las Vegas. Lawyer Jeffrey Segal says Jones wanted to get reinstated to the NFL and waited months before making a deal to get felony charges against him reduced to a misdemeanor. No need to alert Sheriff Goodell. Pacman wears contacts that gives his pupils a red outline. They're sort of like sunlenses that keep glare out of his eyes. Jerry Jones and Wade Phillips used the same method to dance around questions about Adam "Pacman" Jones' first game in a Cowboys uniform. They noted that Pacman didn't see a whole lot of action against the Chargers. That's true, but Pacman had a rough time when the action did come his way. San Diego threw at him twice, completing a 21-yard pass over the middle to Chris Chambers and getting a long pass interference penalty. Pacman missed a tackle in the open field on a 21-yard screen pass to Darren Sproles, and he overpursued on a sweep to Jacob Hester, allowing the rookie to cut inside him for a nice gain. In summary, Pacman looked like a guy who was playing his first game in more than a year. Pacman has shown flashes of brilliance before training camp, but he acknowledges that he's still chipping off rust while learning a new scheme. He'll eventually replace Anthony Henry as the starter at right cornerback, but I like my chances to win a bet with a fellow scribe that Pacman won't start the season opener. Pacman didn't get an opportunity to return a punt last night. The Cowboys wanted to take a look at Danny Amendola in that role during the preseason opener, but there's no question that will be Jones' job when the games count. ...
