Zac Atterberry is taking the long way from Green Bay to Halas Hall. He flew back to his homestate Texas on Monday following a tryout with the Packers. He will arrive at Halas Hall today and will sign a contract to join the practice squad. Atterberry punted well for the Bears in training Camp and the preseason and his agent Rob Sheets said the Bears want to take a look at him six weeks after letting him go. It's not common for teams to have two punters but the Bears could be taking a look just in case something crops up with Brad Maynard down the road. Maynard has been doing well directionally punting and has landed 15 of his 31 punts inside the 20-yard line. ... Source: www.thestar.com --- 126 days ago

Green Bay - The Packers signed defensive end Rudolph Hardie to the practice squad. The 6-2, 269-pound undrafted rookie from Howard was in training Camp with the Detroit Lions before being released on cutdown day. The Packers worked him out late last month. NFLdraftscout.com had some good things to say about Hardie, who was a top sleeper heading into the draft: Compares To: OSI UMENYIORA-New York Giants...Yes, Hardie is a raw prospect who still needs to mature physically, but he is a relentless pass rusher. He might lack explosive timed speed, but his balance, body control and sheer determination has helped him reside in the opposition's backfield. Give him a few years under a patient coaching mentor and you could see the second coming of Umenyiora. Hardie will wear No. 69 for the Packers. ... Source: blogs.jsonline.com --- 28 days ago
Mike McCarthy during his weekly visit with Fox Sports Radio today said he does not want talk of Brett Favre to be part of the Packers' locker room. McCarthy was asked about the report that Favre shared information with the Detroit Lions before the Packers played them in Week 2. "You know, it's really a conversation that I really don't want to be part of," McCarthy said. "I really don't want it to be part of our locker room. I think as an organization we've moved past that situation. I thought we've answered the questions forthright throughout the whole process and training Camp. And we really just want to move on with our season. So I really don't have any comment on any of the stuff that's out there." McCarthy was asked about the decision of the San Francisco 49ers to fire Mike Nolan, with whom McCarthy had worked. "I had a chance to speak with Mike last night," McCarthy said. "Any time this happens in our business, it's one of the ugly parts of our business. I just tend to focus on the personal side of it. Mike and Kathy Nolan are classy people. You just hate to see good people go through this." ... Source: www.packers.com --- 44 days ago
Injuries on defense early this season have required the Packers call on some of their depth, and that could be the case again Sunday with third-year safety Charlie Peprah potentially making his first career NFL start. Starting strong safety Atari Bigby, who has been inactive the past two games with a hamstring injury, was limited in Thursday's practice after not participating at all on Wednesday. Second-year safety Aaron Rouse, who stepped into the starting role in Bigby's absence, sustained a knee injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game at Tampa Bay and did not participate in practice Thursday. Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Rouse is "not coming along as fast as we would have hoped." If both Bigby and Rouse are unable to play Sunday, Peprah would get the start against the Falcons, with cornerback/safety Jarrett Bush backing up Peprah and Nick Collins. "You go back to training Camp, Charlie was right in the thick of it," McCarthy said. "Charli.. ... Source: www.packers.com --- 38 days ago
Packers Story: Work is well underway on the project to construct a new Ray Nitschke Field on the east side of the Don Hutson Center. Currently, workers are constructing a new parking lot on what formerly was Nitschke Field. Once the new lot is complete, the current parking lot adjacent to the Hutson Center will be transformed into the new practice field, complete with permanent bleachers on the east side of the field. The new Nitschke Field will utilize the same natural grass-DD GrassMaster surface used on Clarke Hinkle Field and Lambeau Field. "The project is progressing quite nicely," said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. "In all likelihood, the new Nitschke Field will be ready to serve as the team's regular-season practice field in 2009, and then be ready for training Camp in 2010. The new facility will greatly enhance the fan experience at practice in terms of offering a more comfortable environment to watch the sessions, and also from a safety standpoint being away from .. ... Packers Story: (What's your feeling on Rouse?) He's not coming along as fast as we would have hoped, so we'll see where he is tomorrow. Friday is a big checkup day with all the injured guys, so I'll probably go off Pat McKenzie's recommendation tomorrow. (Are you going to try Bigby tomorrow?) Well, he went some today, and he went through his rehab improved, as far as the intensity of it, and preliminary testing. Hopefully he responds to that. There was some hope of him possibly practicing full today, but it didn't work out that way. (What can you get from Charlie Peprah if you need him?) You go back to training Camp, Charlie was right in the thick of it. Charlie Peprah was someone we felt was pushing the other guys in training Camp and had the pretty significant hamstring injury, missed a lot of time. It's good to have him back. He's been a solid performer for us on special teams, and this is an excellent opportunity for him if h.. ... Source: www.packersnews.com --- 22 days ago

Seven-year veteran guard Terrence Metcalf has been suspended by the league without pay for the next four weeks for violating the NFL policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. The suspension begins immediately, meaning the 6-foot-4, 310-pound Metcalf will be eligible to rejoin the Bears on Monday, Nov. 17, the day after the Bears game against the Packers in Green Bay. Metcalf, a third-round pick in 2002, has started 25 games and played in 84, including all six this season in a reserve role. He went to training Camp this year as the starting left guard but missed three weeks following arthroscopic knee surgery and lost the job to Josh Beekman. ...

APC's fearless leader posted this in his take on McCarthy's latest press conference : The problem with the run defense is that they're trying to hard? I'm not buying that lemon. Buy that lemon, Brandon! From my experience, the "My biggest weakness is that I work too hard" sentiment is true. And I can prove it...sorta. Here's how it happens: you get defensive players that, as individuals, are strong against the run. I reference players like Ryan Pickett, Aaron Kampman, Johnny Jolly, A.J. Hawk and Atari Bigby (when healthy). Not to say that the rest of the defense sucks against the run (except for KGB), but these guys are particularly skilled. Then, those individuals form a unit of 11, go through training Camp and practice, and everything is all about gap control and responsibilities. When executed correctly, the run defense is foolproof because you always have enough players to control all the gaps. I would argue that the Packers had a unit like this at the beginning of the season. However, when one player misses an assignment, it's like a crack in the levee, and the run defense breaks. And when that happens, the players that are usually stout against the run try to cover their responsibilities and the neighboring player's responsibilities. This is what McCarthy means by players "doing too much". By taking on additional responsibility, they leave themselves spread too thin, which results in a domino effect and the subsequent ... GREEN BAY The Green Bay Packers made a long-term commitment to quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Friday, signing the first-year starter to a contract extension through 2014. The team announced the deal after practice Friday afternoon, when Rodgers signed the paperwork. Terms were not disclosed. It means a lot, Rodgers said. Im very excited knowing that my future is going to be here in Green Bay. A former standout at California, Rodgers was the Packers first-round pick in 2005. He then spent three years as the backup to Brett Favre. His long-awaited opportunity to become Green Bays starter came when Favre retired in March. Then Favre expressed a desire to return to football, making Rodgers future seem uncertain. But when Favre finally came out of retirement after training Camp started in early August, Packers management stood by its commitment to Rodgers and traded Favre, the NFLs only three-time MVP, to the New York Jets for a conditional draft pick. I appreciate the commitment that theyve made, and I plan to reciprocate that commitment in my play and hopefully prove to them that they made the correct decision giving me this extension, Rodgers said Friday. The 24-year-old has had a solid beginning as a pro starter. In seven games, he has completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 1,668 yards and 12 touchdowns with only four interceptions. His passer rating is 98.8. Rodgers has played the last three games with a sprained throwing should ... Source: www.wisconsinrapidstribune.com --- 18 days ago
