Activision good; Electronic Arts bad. That's the word from Wedbush Morgan analyst and walking sound bite Michael Pachter, who offered that acidic appraisal of EA's management in a note to investors last Friday. See, while the rest of us were hunkering down with Fallout 3 last week, EA suffered a nuclear meltdown of its own, posting a $310-million loss , laying off 600 employees and watching its stock take a nosedive off the top of the ugly tree . Pachter blamed EA's "smug" management for much of the financial bloodbath—and praised archrival Activision as "investor-friendly": "(EA's management) has demonstrated an uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the eyes of investors, and we think that these old habits will take a long time to die," Pachter wrote. "The reason for the disparity in valuation is simple: investors believe that (Activision) has 'good' management, given that the company has consistently beat expectations and raised guidance, while being incredibly investor-friendly; in contrast, investors appear to believe that EA has 'bad' management, given that the company has consistently missed expectations and lowered guidance, while projecting an appearance of smugness bordering on hostility to investors." Strange: EA has "consistently missed expectations ... while projecting an appearance of smugness bordering on hostility." Sounds like EA treats investors the same way it treats gamers. And while I ...

After EA's disappointing quarterly report, followed by a drop in video game shares last week, investors are now abandoning the publisher, mainly because EA management has shown indifference in handling their predicament. Despite having similar problems, Activision has made steps to ensure investors of their company's strength and growth. EA, on the other hand, has remained aloof on the matter. Industry analyst Michael Pachter writes, The reason for the disparity in valuation is simple: investors believe that [Activision] has "good" management, given that the company has consistently beat expectations and raised guidance, while being incredibly investor friendly; in contrast, investors appear to believe that EA has "bad" management, given that the company has consistently missed expectations and lowered guidance, while projecting an appearance of smugness bordering on hostility to investors. Pachter has pointed out before that EA is very much capable of turning things around. Pachter still maintains that EA remains strong and is on a road to improvement, although, their only shortcoming would be in ignoring investor concerns. This is even complicated further by the fact that investors are no longer showing confidence that EA can indeed turn things around. EA has dropped 18 in shares since Thursday. EA has yet to make a statement on the matter, but it appears that they have to take action - and fast. Related articles: Market analysts un ...

Michael Pachter has returned with his crystal ball to give us a glimpse... of the past! Dun dun dunnnnn. Pachter has given us his predictions for the month of October ahead of the official numbers from the NPD Group. Pachter predicts that the Wii dominated last month. Easy enough to predict, seeing as Nintendo's ramping up production by 33 . One of his more questionable predictions is the outcome between the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Note that October was the month that Fable 2 and LittleBigPlanet were both released - both platform exclusives and console sellers in their own right. It seems the magnitude of LittleBigPlanet and its cutesy wutesy sackboys didn't sway Pachter's opinion though. According to him, the Xbox 360 still outsold the Sony console for October. I wouldn't be surprised if he's right; Microsoft 's price cut last September really kicked up Xbox 360 sales. They also introduced new bundles for the holiday season , so further sales boosts are expected. Here are the sales numbers that Pachter's crystal ball predicts for October: Nintendo DS: 525,000 Wii: 775,000 Xbox 360: 325,000 PS3 and PSP: 225,000 PS2: 135,000 ...

Despite the woes that are plaguing the world markets, the video game industry is "likely to weather a recession quite well." This is according to everyone's favorite analyst, Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter . Pachter says that during a recession, people would actually spend more time in leisure and entertainment activity. Only, people would shift from expensive forms of entertainment to cheap ones. Which is only logical, really. Following that line of thinking, Pachter continues saying that video gaming is one of the cheapest forms of entertainment, especially if you already have a console in your home. And besides, a recession won't stop the extremely hardcore from buying a game. Pachter even says that: We believe that some portion of console households may be lower income [...] but believe that even these households are likely to continue purchasing software, as they most likely contain a self-indulgent, hardcore gamer. ... "self-indulgent, hardcore gamer"? ... He confuses me. Is he for gamers or against them? Anyway, he had a lot to say about video gaming and recessions, but when it comes right down to it, he believes that the video game industry won't suffer much: We end up concluding that video games are about as susceptible to a recession as the average of all consumer purchases, so we expect a 'haircut' of 5 percent this holiday. Filed under: Business Barring troglodytism or a severe case of denial, it's pretty safe to say that everyone knows the US (and, we hear, global) economy isn't doing too hot at the moment. Although the video game industry clearly isn't recession proof , Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter does think that October's NPD hardware sales numbers (expected later this week) will show how recession resistant it is . Pachter believes that all three consoles are going strong into the holiday season and expects an 18% hardware sales increase over last year. If he's correct, he believes investors should take it as a sign that the video game industry will do better than the average business during the recession. If hardware sales go down in October, Pachter believes the recession has infected the industry and darkness shall sweep across the lands. It's not surprising that artist Charles Pachter's quirky take on iconic Canadian imagery has found its way into a children's book. It's more surprising that it's taken this long for his fun and seemingly kid-friendly artwork to make its way there. M is for Moose (Cormorant Books, 2008) takes a trip through the alphabet accompanied by some of the most famous images from the Toronto artist's portfolio—including the Hockey Knights in Canada that adorns College Station—as well as some specially created images. The moose is a recurring character—what else would be expected from an artist who named his Toronto workspace Moose Factory ?—as are butter tarts, the Queen, and writers such as Margaret Laurence and Margaret Atwood. Having developed his fascination with how Canada is defined—by its history, literature, wildlife, and multicultural identity—as a child, Pachter was pushed to create his art as a reaction to encounters with profs who dismissed the importance of the country's symbols. "So," Pachter explains in the book's afterword, "I began to draw, paint, and make prints in which I wanted to make Canada look cool, elegant, interesting, even 'glamourous.'" The insightful afterword is just one of the novel extras that allow the book to be enjoyed beyond the pictures alone. In addition, there are butter tart recipes, games to play while re-reading the book, and background notes on the historical characters depicted. Pachter's career a ...

No real surprise there, then. Except for the fact that Nintendo hasn’t had any really major software releases, and it’s still pulling in figures of 600,000 - that’s twice the 360’s estimated total of 300,000, and more than three times PS3’s paltry sum of 175,000 consoles shifted. It’ll be interesting to see whether the recent [...] ...
