Both were 'awful' in 2008. So, what kind of deals can free-agent catchers PUDGE Rodriguez and Jason Varitek expect. Considering the MLB-wide dearth of decent catching, pretty good ones, Danny Knobler says. ...

I've added a couple of new political songs to my repertoire from the movie Bob Roberts . The first is "Don't Vote," a song about how you shouldn't vote if you love terrorists, and the second is "Complain," a classic anthem about people who don't want to make their own living and then complain about everything being handed out to them.Cross-posted on <PUDGE/*>. ...

Bobby Abreu and Ivan Rodriguez were among the first Yankees to file for free agency yesterday, along with Chad Moeller and Sidney Ponson. There's a pretty good chance that none of those guys wind up back with the Yankees in 2008. I'd say Abreu has the best chance, and not a strong one at that, of returning. Moeller's really the only other one with any chance of being back. Here's a link to my story on the upcoming start of free agency, in which we talk starting pitching (CC Sabathia), Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez. ...

We’ve talked about this a bit before, but with it becoming official that Ivan Rodriguez will be a Type B free agent, we should revisit it. Should the Yankees offer him arbitration in order to gain a supplemental round pick when he signs with a different team? There are a couple of factors to consider [...] ...

We’ve got a ton of afternoon content in the pipeline, but I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss Ivan Rodriguez’s free agent status. I was thought that he’d get the Type B label, and that the Yanks wouldn’t go through the pain of offering him arbitration, only to have him accept and saddle them [...] ...

Varitek, the Red Sox captain, is a free agent for the first time since 2004. The 36-year-old catcher batted .220 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs in 2008, his 12th season with Boston. He is joined in the free-agent field by Red Sox teammate Dave Ross, Ivan Rodriguez, Paul Lo Duca and Jason LaRue. The other [...] ...

In doing some very quick math this morning, I've determined (correctly I hope) that the Tigers won-loss record in 2008 was 55-53 with PUDGE on the roster and 19-35 following his trade to the Yankees. We'll be signing a catcher to (minimally) supplement Dusty Ryan in 2009. Should PUDGE be that... ...

I'm surprised to hear that the Mets might be in the market for a new catcher. Brian Schneider was a target of Omar Minya's, who was familiar with his work since he was his GM in Montreal. I remember last off-season the Mets were willing to give up offense at the catchers position for a defensive minded catcher who worked well with pitcher's. My understanding is that the pitching staff was happy with the way he called a game and after getting off to a rough start behind the plate he settle into having a fine defensive year. The 32 y/o catcher hit .257 with a .339 OBP his weak hitting became much more noticeable when the offense struggled and the bottom of the order became an automatic out. He is signed through 2009 at the very reasonable cost of 4.9 mm. If I was looking to move a catcher it would be Ramon Castro, he is just injured too often for me..... But there has been speculation that some in the organization weren't happy with Schneider and felt that the catcher should be the leader of the team. Today Mark Healey of Gotham Baseball Magazine had an article suggesting PUDGE Rodriquez as a player that would be a good fit for the Mets. According to Healey, PUDGE was interested in playing under the Mets when Omar first took over. For the mets he would put another bat in the line while also becoming that gritty veteran leader who has won before. He is a career .255 post season hitter and hit .313 in the Playoffs for the World Champion 2 ...

If you had both a hungry dog and a pic of the '75 World Series that needed an autograph, you were in luck if you found yourself in Boston on Thursday night Though he's probably one of the last Hall of Famers I would have suspected for such a task, Carlton Fisk actually served as a waiter for hounds at the ALPO Chop House Originals Grills — "Boston's first all-dog restaurant" on Newbury Street.  From PR Newswire: "During the season of giving, what better way for Boston dog owners to show their four-legged friends how much they love them than by taking them out for a delicious, mouth-watering meal," said Red Sox Hall of Famer and dog lover Carlton Fisk. "Our dogs are truly our best friends and there's nothing they deserve more than a fun night out with other canine 'can-noisseurs' at the hottest new restaurant in town."  Sadly, PUDGE was only serving the pups for one night and the temporary pooch restaurant ends its run tonight. Insert your joke about Boston being returned to the college kids here.  (If anyone was actually at the "restaurant" on Thursday night and has pictures, I'd be interested in seeing and posting them. If you got 'em, email 'em .)  ...

As the P-I reports, Mayor Nickels is planning to go ahead with a ban on guns on Seattle City land, and damn our rights: state law allows citizens to have guns there, and explicitly prohibits local regulations to the contrary.Nickels' spokesperson says the city needs more "clarity" on state law. She's lying. We know what state law says, and McKenna's office gave any clarification they needed. What she means is that she is trying to force the overturning of state law through the violation of it.Nickels is just one more Democrat who does not respect the rule of law.The P-I story also falsely claims that President Bush allowed the "assault weapons ban" to expire. No renewal of the plan ever came before him. Maybe the reporter and editors don't realize Congress, not the President, makes laws?Cross-posted on <PUDGE/*>. ...

Tom Friedman, in his non-endorsement endorsement of Barack Obama, said something that should be utterly astonishing, but unfortunately, wasn't: Never has one generation spent so much of its children's wealth in such a short period of time with so little to show for it as in the Bush years. Under George W. Bush, America has foisted onto future generations a huge financial burden to finance our current tax cuts, wars, and now bailouts. So according to Friedman, when I vote to keep my money in my pockets so I can provide and save for my children, I am voting to take money away from my children, because all wealth is the government's wealth. That's the only sane way to parse this tripe: our "children's wealth" is spent when government doesn't control that wealth. It's one thing to say spending on a war, or a bridge, or other actual spending is "spending our children's wealth." But to say that allowing people to keep their own money is such "spending," is socialism. Or worse. It is talk like this that will make the comeback of liberty and the Republican Party that much easier in two or four years.(Oh, and Tom, that bailout was a Democratic bill, and besides, your own favored candidate, Barack Obama, says it won't cost ANY money. Frankly, I am a little surprised you didn't tow the party line on that one, but I guess the temptation to attack Bush was stronger than your loyalty to Obama.)Cross-posted on <PUDGE/*>. ...

Let's grow up, conservatives. If we want to take the party back -- and I think we can -- let's get to work. -- Barry Goldwater, 27 July 1960.I am not on the McCain-bash bandwagon. This isn't about McCain. But let's face it: the GOP has not been run by strong conservatives up and down the ticket since Newt Gingrich left. We've not been in the wilderness quite as much as conservatives had been in 1960 -- no conservative President, nor even nominee, in almost 30 years, and Democratic domination of the Congress for almost as long -- but we soon may be.Alf Landon, Wendell Willkie, Thomas Dewey, Dwight Eisenhower. It's more un-conservative than Bush, Dole, Bush, McCain. But even though I'd defend Dole's and McCain's more-conservative-than-not credentials, and the left tries to paint the Bushes as conservatives, it's not just about the top of the ticket, but the control of the party, and the Bush years were, by any objective standard, anything but conservative on most issues.I don't know how to fix things exactly, but one thing is clear: if you sit on the sidelines, you're contributing to the problem. Get to work.Cross-posted on <PUDGE/*>. ...
