Rumors and patents aside, the real issue now is that are these the real, official Sony Ericsson PSP Phone specs? Going by the gripe the PSP Phone is going to be made by Sony Ericsson, not just Sony. It will feature the "full PSP experience" plus give you some advanced Phone features. Looks like somebody couldn't wait on Sony Ericsson to release their official PSP Phone. Chinese modders tore open their Sony handheld to make a PSP Phone worthy of Frankenstein. Click on the pictures above for some close-ups. Not much is known about this mod as of now - not if it can make calls, or make texts or anything. But that's mostly because we can't read Chinese. At any rate, it does look like an awesome mod. For the curious, the Phone they used - according to one poster on the Jewel Factory - is a Haier m2000. We'll keep you updated as soon as we find out more. Tired of waiting for Sony to make their own PSP Phone, a hacker created his own functional prototype. By gutting out the UMD drive from the PSP, he made room for a fancy touch screen Phone. It's impressive, although some may complain that this is nothing more than a fancy piecemeal job, as there's no real integration between the PSP gaming compartment and the Phone itself. There have been a few rumoured devices over the years that have got the minds and mouths of the technology community working overtime. The iPhone and the Wii are two such examples. The Sony PlayStation Portable was introduced to similar fanfare in December 2004, and although its popularity has been average worldwide, that hasn't stopped legions of fans longing for the day when the PSP Phone finally lands on the shelves. So what's been said so far, what patents have been filed, what concept art has been produced and above all, how much of it is tosh and gubbins? The patent The first movement that really kicked off the PSP Phone rumours was the filing of a patent, back in June 2007. The design featured a rotating screen with a set of keys not dissimilar to those found on the PSP itself, for 'sophisticated mobile game-playing'. Then, two weeks later, Sony Ericsson spokesperson Merran Wrigley did not rule out the possibility of a PSP equipped Phone device. "We're continually evaluating other propositions but they have to be credible propositions," she said. However, Sony Ericsson stated that it was "not interested in sticking parts on phones that destroy the brand equity that's been built up by Sony ". So far, so confusing, right? OK, so it may not be the official PSP Phone the world and its fanboys appears to have been waiting for, but at least it shows Sony what can be done. A chap in Japan has opened up his PSP (a feat in itself) and hacked out the useless UMD drive. Even that alone would be worth writing about, but the guy then managed to put a HAIER touchscreen mobile Phone in the back. Calls on the PSP! Now he can make and receive calls and basically do all the things you would on a mobile, and then flip it over to play a few levels of his favourite PSP title (let's say Lumines, which is a great title). The one question…how does he charge the mobile when it runs out? ...
