I had a conversation with a Commissioner to the last GA this week.  We were talking about what she liked and didn't like.  She said that she didn't like all of the lobbyists.  My immediate reaction was that she was talking about all the Louisville folks who attend on your dime.  There were 344 General Assembly Council people authorized to attend in San Jose.  The office of the General Assembly (the Stated Clerk's office) sent another 49.  So there were roughly 400 PC(USA) employees from just these two entities-not even counting the other three that make up the denomination.  Or counting the Synod, Presbytery, and seminary employees that you're paying for.  Faith and Freedom magazine estimated that we spent over $600,000 getting all of those people there. But she wasn't talking about them.  She was talking about all of the interest groups.  People for same sex marriage.  People against.  People for the Palestinians.  People for Israel.  People for prayer.  People for action.  On and on. I'm interested in talking with her further about that since I didn't really feel any pressure or intiimidation from all the groups.  Almost all of the groups charged for meals with them so I didn't really come into contact with them and it seems to me that most people would only come into contact with people they agreed with. But I did come in contact with the 400 folks from Louisville and they certainly had an opinion.  The denomination makes much of t ...

On November 2, 1953, a "Letter to PRESBYTERIANS" was mailed to presbyteries and sessions. Simultaneously, a press release was issued and copies sent to President Dwight Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles - both PRESBYTERIANS - and Presbyterian members of Congress. Issued by the General Council of the Presbyterian Church (USA) by Moderator John A. Mackay, the letter was the strongest denominational refutation of McCarthyism to date. The letter read in part: "... treason and dissent are being confused. The shrine of conscience and private judgment, which God alone has a right to enter, is being invaded. Attacks are being made upon citizens of integrity and social passion which are utterly alien to the Protestant religious tradition which has been a main source of the freedoms which people of the United States enjoy." Reverend Mackay served as President of Princeton Theological Seminary for 23 years (1936 - 1959). Four months later, CBS-TV and Edward R. Murrow broadcasted its famous show decrying Senate McCarthy's tactics, including those used at the Army hearings. In October 1954, a Senate committee recommended censure which was approved by the U.S. Senate in early December 1954, just over a year from the issuance of the Presbyterian letter. ...

That's the headline on a Presbyterian News Service story reporting on a talk by the renowned Bible scholar Walter Brueggemann. Lots of provocative stuff here, so keep reading: Neither absolutist nor atheist be Brueggemann says God's covenant more complex than most believe by Jerry L. Van Marter Presbyterian News Service MINNEAPOLIS -- Human attempts to define God as either judgmental or gracious fail to appreciate that God is both and is engaged in an internal dialogue that makes covenantal theology far more dynamic and complex than most Christians are willing to admit ... and accept, Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann told the Covenant Network of PRESBYTERIANS at the group's 11th annual conference here today (Nov. 7). "A faithful articulation of who God is recognizes that God breaks into the world with both promise and summons," Brueggemann told the group, which was created in 1997 to work for the full inclusion of all PRESBYTERIANS -- particularly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered members -- in the life of the church, including service as ordained officers. "Biblical tradition is saturated with deep contradiction," Brueggemann said. "Abraham is given a unilateral, unconditional covenant -- 'I will make of you a great nation' -- it's all about God. "But Moses is given a bilateral, conditional covenant," he continued, "'If you really obey my commands, then you will be my people.'" Ticking off example after example fr ...

GREENSBORO — Three North Carolina Baptist schools took advantage of their first opportunity to elect trustees from churches not affiliated with the Baptist State Convention (BSC). This is the first year the five N.C. Baptist colleges can elect their own trustees under an agreement finalized by messengers to the BSC annual meeting Nov. 11. The schools are giving up Cooperative Program funding in exchange for the opportunity to elect their own trustees. The agreement, passed on first reading last year, says school leaders are committed to having a "significant portion" of trustees from churches in friendly cooperation with the BSC. The phrase is not defined further. None of the nine trustees elected by Wingate University are from cooperating BSC churches. Three are from churches that have pulled out of the BSC in recent years. One is from a South Carolina Baptist church; one from an independent church in Charlotte; two are PRESBYTERIANS; one is a Methodist; and one is an Episcopalian. Four of nine trustees elected by Gardner-Webb University are from cooperating BSC churches. Two are PRESBYTERIANS; one is from a church in South Carolina; one is a Methodist; and one is a Lutheran. Nine of Campbell University trustees this year are from cooperating BSC churches. One is a Methodist; one is a Presbyterian; and one attends a Christian church. All nine of the trustees elected by Mars Hill College are from BSC churches. Chowan University ...
