How can you not love the month of October? It's Halloween-time (my favorite holiday), the unbearably hot California summer is finally showing signs of letting up, all three major American sports return to prime-time television, the Red Sox are once again dominating the Angels in the post-season and the Cubs are doing their best to make sure that the next 100 years follow in the path of the last 100 years! It's glorious I say! Today is chock full of post-season baseball, as all but one of the division series' (the one that ended last night) will be on-display. In the first action of the day (10:00am PDT), the Phillies and Brewers square off one more time at Miller Park after the Crew staved off elimination last night with an inspired 4-1 win. The Phils will be going with former Athletic Bazooka/Joe "Cupcakes" Blanton, while the Brew Crew will counter with the most grizzly of grizzled vets, Jeff Suppan. I'm rooting Brew Crew all the way here. I like their style and several of their players particularly - I'm constantly dreaming up scenarios where Beane trades for JJ Hardy this winter! In matinee action (1:00pm PDT), everyone's favorite Tampa Bay Rays look for the kill in Chicago's south side as they send Matt Garza to the mound to counter fellow-green-thumbed youngster John Danks. While I always try to wish Swisher the best, I despise Ozzie Guillen (and Orlando Cabrera) and the Rays are just so cute and lovable! Then in the night-ca ... All AL action today. White Sox/Devil Rays at 4:07 Cardinals time. This one features two 25-year-old pitchers. Gavin Floyd goes for the Sox; he's the Phillies prospect with the big curveball who failed five or six big league trials in a row before winning 17 games (and outperforming his peripherals by a ton) this year. The Devil Rays trot out Andy Sonnanstine, who is to old pitchers' skills what Travis Hafner was to old players' skills. He doesn't strike anybody out; he doesn't walk anybody; his fastball has been knocked out of the air by birds in flight. But when you walk less than forty batters in almost 200 innings and you have something vaguely resembling major league stuff you'll be successful, at least for a while. If you want to see what everyone was hoping Joel Pineiro would turn into this year, Sonnanstine's a good visual. The late game, at 7:37, has the Angels bringing John Lackey into Boston, where he'll face Jon Lester. Winner gets to standardize the spelling of his first name. ... Do you think Craig Sager looks at himself in the mirror after he puts on the purple suit with white stripes and says, “Damn I look good.” A few other thoughts on the PLAYOFFS: * That Frank Caliendo show on TBS could well be the greatest television program since M*A*S*H . Thanks for nothing, Lou Piniella. All the stars should have been aligned for the Cubs to win it all this year, given that it was the 100th anniversary of their last World Series, but instead Chicago got swept by Joe Torre and the Dodgers. The National League Championship Series is now set after the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-2 on Sunday to win the Divisional Series playoff 3-1. ... Source: athleticsnation.com --- 2 hours ago
Yes, the American League series continue on while the National League Championship Series is ready and waiting. The Rays send Andy Sonnanstine to the mound to face the White Sox and Gavin Floyd. Even though I love Nick Swisher, the truth is that I must love Dan Johnson and Carlos Pena more because I really want the Rays to go to the ALCS. Funny thing is that I'm noticing a huge sentiment that feels that same exact way. I just like to see teams (and people for that matter) that have been perennial doormats rise from the ashes and become something better. It's what so many of us think of as that American story, no? Sonnanstine's season stats are: W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP 2008 - Andy Sonnanstine 13-9 32 32 1 1 0 0 193.1 212 105 94 21 37 124 4.38 1.29 Floyd's stats are: W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP 2008 - Gavin Floyd 17-8 33 33 1 0 0 0 206.1 190 107 88 30 70 145 3.84 1.26 It would appear that the White Sox have the starting pitching edge. We shall see. The second game is the one I happen to be more interested in because the Red Sox failed to shove the stake into the hearts of the evil Angels of Anaheim last night. The Red Sox were so close to ending the Angels season that it nearly pained me to watch them not score with the bases loaded on K-Rod. It would've been sweet to see his Angels career end that way. Any way, the task becomes a bit tougher today because the Sox will now have ... Source: www.record-eagle.com --- 16 hours ago

The official Ohio High School Athletic Association calendar says the Division I football PLAYOFFS begin on the first day of November. The reality for the Massillon Tigers is that their PLAYOFFS don’t start on the first Saturday in November, but actually began on the first Friday in October with a 69-7 win over Brantford (Ont.) Collegiate. Massillon sits at 4-3, and is currently outside of the top 10 in the Division I, Region 2 computer rankings. In order for the Tigers to get into the PLAYOFFS, they will need a strong finish over this final stretch of games. While the Mustangs may have been an overmatched opponent, the way a first-round foe can be in the PLAYOFFS, there is no question the final three games on the Tigers regular season schedule will be demonstrably tougher. That starts with Saturday’s trip to meet 4-3 Warren Harding at Mollenkopf Stadium, a place Massillon hasn’t won at since 1986 – a span of only four games, actually, due to a 12-year hiatus in the series because of bad blood between the two programs. The Raiders are coming off an outcome the Tigers can relate to, a 49-7 loss to St. Ignatius last Saturday. Massillon had lost to the Wildcats by the exact same score just a week before at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. After Warren is another road trip for the Tigers, this time to 5-2 Mentor. That just leaves the regular season finale against one of Stark County’s hottest teams, archrival McKinley, which is 5-2 and on a f ... Source: www.wuwm.com --- 14 hours ago

Well, might as well make it an even hundred. Los Angeles Dodgers 3, Chicago Cubs 1 : The Cubs once again failed to advance as Hiroki Kuroda, James Loney (fast becoming my favourite non-Jay player not named Ichiro) and the Dodgers swept the Cubs out of the ALDS. Russell Martin, Manny Ramirez, and Rafael Furcal also had excellent series for the Blues, who enjoyed great starting pitching from Derek Lowe, Chad Billingsley, and Kuroda as well as excellent work out of the bullpen (with the exception of Takashi Saito). Great starting pitching, shutdown bullpen work, and fantastic hitting out of the whole top half of the lineup - Now that's how you win a DS. Reed Johnson, who by the way, ended the season with an OPS 1 point lower than Joe Inglett (.779) never got into the series, unfortunately. Milwaukee 4, Philadelphia 1 : The Brewers did their best to make this a series by staving off elimination behind a good performance from ex-Jay David Bush (good thing he didn't have to face an AL East team since we all know he's not an AL East pitcher (not that I'm complaining about the Overbay trade, since it was an excellent trade for the Jays - I just found that to be a pointless post-hoc potshot by J.P.)) The ageless one, Jamie Moyer, didn't have a great start, and the bullpen did not perfom well either for the Phils. Matt Stairs pinch-hit but unsuccessfully, while former Jay Jayson Werth continued to have a great series with two more hit ... Source: www.bluebirdbanter.com --- 13 hours ago
Title comes from a Jeremy Fisher song, Cigarette, that I've come across lately and those words seem to talk about me and baseball. Philadelphia 6 Milwaukee 2 Well, the Brewers pushed it one game past a sweep but that was it. Blanton was great, 6 innings 5 hits, 7 strikeouts and 1 earned. Jeff Suppan was decidedly not great, he lasted only 3 innings and gave up 5 earned runs. The Phillies' 3rd inning was really all that mattered today. Victorino (he's been in the middle of everything this series) doubled, then with 2 out Howard was intentioinally walked then Pat Burrell and, former Jay, Jayson Werth went back-to-back and the game was pretty much over. Prince (or is that the batter formerly known as Prince) Fielder hit a massive home run in the 7th and they got one more run in the 8th. Jimmy Rollins lead off the game with a home run and Burrell got his second home run of the game in the Phillies half of the 8th. Another former Jay, Matt Stairs, hit into a double play in the 9th in his second at bat of the series. So Phillies and Dodgers in the NLCS, so I was 1 for 2 in the NL half of the pool......so really I'm going much better than I have on any of the football pools. White Sox 5 Tampa Bay 3 So in the 4th inning of today's game the White Sox were able to score more runs (3) off Matt Garza than the Jays were able to score in 4 games (1) against him this season. And, of course, today they equaled the number of wins we managed off hi ...
