At least 15 Turkish soldiers have been killed in clashes with Kurdish fighters in the southeast of Turkey, in one of the deadliest attacks by Kurdish fighters in recent years. At least 23 Members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), were also said to have died in the fighting, TV station CNN-Turk said on Saturday. Media reports said the fighting took place over night on Friday in Semdinli in Hakkari province, along the borders with Iraq and Iran. Turkey's military said in a statement that its soldiers opened fire, in response to an overnight attack by PKK militants on a Turkish military outpost, and killed some of the militants. Two soldiers remained unaccounted for after Friday's attack, General Metin Gurak, who heads the Turkish general staff's press department, told the Anatolia news agency. He said that Turkish forces had responded to the attack with artillery fire and attack helicopters, while additional forces had been dispatched to the area. "Most of our losses were caused by heavy weapons' fire from the north of Iraq," Gurak said. Military operation Turkish fighter jets and artillery units also attacked a group of PKK militants in the north of Iraq, about 10km from the station under attack, Gurak said. Yousef al-Sharif , reporting for Al Jazeera from Ankara, said a military operation was under way in the area as a result of the attack. By Stephen Long, Los Angeles If any of you have been wondering whatever happened to our old buddy Bruce Fein, the former Assistant Deputy Attorney General and Washington D.C. lobbyist and mercenary for the LTTE, look no further. He’s found himself a greener pasture now that he realizes that the LTTE is doomed for extinction. Got to keep that cash flow going, you know. Apparently he’s taken on a new client, the government of Turkey. In an article he wrote that was published today in the Turkish Daily News, he’s supporting the Republic of Turkey in its initiative to ban the Democratic Society Party (DPT), "a virtual appendage of the Maoist terrorist organization, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been responsible for the deaths of a grim 15,000 Turkish civilians and security force Members. Most of the PKK's civilian victims are other Kurds who repudiate their assassinations. The DTP openly endorses the PKK's secessionist aims and violent methods." read more ... PM Erdoğan gone crazy. His latest statements are unbelievable. He has explicitly supported citizens' use of weapons against protesters. He is riding on the nationalistic discourse even MHP does not use any more: Love or Leave... We will see what this will lead to. I am afraid that AKP now alienates most of Kurds. Mr. Erdoğan believes he has already secured more pious, traditional Kurds but he seems to ignore that religious Kurds are not like religious Turks. Every Kurd I know that does not support PKK still have a nationalistic consciousness. They voted for AKP because they thought this party was the only one that could embrace them. Now it seems this may not be the case. AKP might witness a big time disappointment in the region... Prime Minister along with some other ministers... In the mean time, militaristic propaganda knows no boundaries in major Turkish TV channels. Those respected anchormen/journalists like Uğur Dündar and Mehmet Ali Birand have spent considerable amount of prime time coverage from commando education centers this week! Just watch the prime time news, you will see what I mean. This week most of the Members of Turkish government got briefed at the commando center! MHP Chairman Head Advisor Hidayet Vahapoglu stated that if the Government wanted to save the country from terrorism, it should establish buffer zone in the northern Iraq. "This zone will eliminate weak points occurred in Turkey-Iraq borders. There are the tallest sites, which are not under control. Terrorists should be prevented to pass our country from these sites. Our Chairman stressed necessity of establishment of national consensus. All parties should demonstrate will in this issue. AKP prolongs several serious measures to be taken against PKK terrorist organization because of several issues and make the US feel responsibility for all developments. The US controls Iraq at present. If Americans cannot prevent terrorist actions against our country, we have right to establish buffer zone in our border with Iraq. Hidayat Vahapoglu said 150-200-man group composed of PKK Members is in the occupied Azerbaijani territories. "I can exactly say that there are PKK terrorists in Karabakh. Turkish Armed Forces can not carry out operation in Nagorno Karabakh now. But if AKP government starts talks with Armenia, this issue should be certainly discussed, or it should be openly stated in the UN that Armenia supports PKK terrorist organization and sheltered the Members of this organization in the occupied Nagorno Karabakh territory," he said. ... Comrades, We have been observing the Turkish government and so-called opposition parties perverting the facts to public opinion about the societal stress, indignation and the reaction of million people for the last 20 days. Our Party (DTP) has worked tirelessly for peace. Despite the government's unseeing eyes – deaf ears, we didn't give up faith in democracy and freedom. In spite of our policy of peace, our party and our supporters have been continuously exposed to aggression. DTP was faced with a court case to close it, our mayors removed from their offices and arrested. Cases against our MPs continued regardless of their immunity. Calls to kill DTP Members were not regarded as a crime by the courts. Lynch campaigns were organized in districts against to Kurdish population. Houses and work places were stoned and sacked under the supervision of the gendarmerie and the police. All lynches, and threats were shown as fair public reactions by TV news bulletins. Never have we seen such serious assaults on our people as in the last 20 days. Recent events show that, AKP has no project or idea about solving the Kurdish issue. The government has pursued militarist policies has proven as neutral role to make a democratic solution. However, our faith in dialogue and peaceful solution hasn't weakened. Insisting on militarist approaches in lines and cross-border operation is enhancing the violence, in spite of PKK's ceasefire invitations. DTP has ...
