We have a new book out, The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present , published by the Simon & Schuster imprint Fireside Books. It explores our 500 favorite songs from 1977-2006-- interspersed with sidebars on the most vital subgenres from electro to grime to riot grrrl-- to construct an alternate history of the past three decades of popular music. In the coming weeks we'll be posting streams of tracks from the book here in Forkcast and giving you a sneak peek at some of the entries.  Tomorrow (Tuesday), November 18, is the first of two official launch parties. At Sonotheque here in Chicago, located at 1444 W. Chicago, we'll be spinning tracks from the book from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. And, as announced today in news , there's another launch party in Brooklyn on Wednesday, November 26. Dance and bowl (yes, bowl) to more selections from The Pitchfork 500 at The Gutter Bar , located at 200 N. 14th St. (between Wythe and Berry) in Williamsburg. We'll be there from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. There's no cover for either party and there will be books for sale. For a complete rundown of events, check www.thepitchfork500.com . Dress is an interesting song, and a very good song. PJ Harvey sings it very well, and it’s got a nice edge to it, which is why I like it–well, one reason I like it. So what exactly is it about? Is it about trying to be someone that you aren’t in order to impress [...] ...

If 1991 was the year that punk broke, 1993 was the year that Alternative took hold. Nirvana and Pearl Jam delivered follow-ups to their blockbusters, rock radio was ruled by their imitators Stone Temple Pilots, pop radio saw more guitars than it did in years thanks to R.E.M. and their followers like the Gin Blossoms. Thanks to PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, Belly, Luscious Jackson, Juliana Hatfield, and the Breeders, it was the year of Women in Rock -- so coined by papers looking hard for a trend -- but Guyville didn't cower either, thanks to major-label debuts by Urge Overkill and the Afghan Whigs. And that was just in the U.S.! ...

Sinead O'Connor was one of the key artists of the 1990s, but oddly, considering her abundant talent and charisma, she stood out more for style than substance. O'Connor had plenty of attitude, a shaved head, and an abundant willingness to speak out on controversial topics. Alongside straightforward rocker Joan Jett, O'Connor helped pave the way for everyone from Courtney Love to P.J. Harvey and the entire Lilith Fair generation. Her debut album was a mainstream alternative radio hit, but the superior follow-up I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got , fueled by the Prince-penned single "Nothing Compares 2 U," deservedly became one of the hottest albums of the early '90s. While she was busy getting plenty of tabloid press for badly thought-out political statements, her subsequent albums stopped selling and O'Connor became gun-shy after her respectable 1994 release Universal Mother . But no one could expect such a towering talent to remain quiet for long, and O'Connor enjoyed a new burst of creative energy with 2000's Faith In Courage and her album of Irish traditionals, 2002's Sean-Nos Nua . She retired again in 2002, but roared back to action in 2005, teaming up with famed reggae producers Sly and Robbie for a daring, beautifully executed album of classic reggae covers. - Nick Dedina ...

Photo:Adriana Jovanovic Every week, Hype Monitor wades through the most buzzed-about bands all across the Internet. The Band: She Keeps Bees The Buzz: Dark rock from Brooklyn that recalls Rid of Me-era PJ Harvey, ignited by the rich, soulful vocals of Jess Larrabee. Listen If: You're a teeth grinder or a fist shaker, or you like the sound of grimy, primal blues. Key Track: "Gimmie," where Larrabee pours her rich voice over a grizzled guitar strum. The Band: Fredrik The Buzz: Swedish collective disappears into the woods, writes airy songs built from thumping percussion and fluttering acoustic guitars. Listen If: You're looking for the perfect soundtrack for a long hike in a dark woods. Key Track: "Black Fur," a lonesome, loping number boasting a gently pleading vocal melody. The Band: Kissey Asplund The Buzz: Swedish soul singer — really! — whose eccentricities make Erykah Badu look like Roberta Flack. Listen If: You have a hard time believing there's such a thing as Swedish soul, or like to spend long hour in basement rooms surrounded by smoke. Key Track: "Fuss 'n' Fight," where Asplund recites blank verse over a flat, fitful electronic backbeat. ...

“Oh dear child, don’t deny, you need it, need it for your alibi.” Put in the CD This Storm and out comes a big fresh breath of air, the strong, unique voice of teenager Sonya Kitchell. She is a singer/songwriter in the vein of Ani Difranco, Tracy Chapman, and PJ Harvey who plays guitar and croons like we all tried to do in our basement in high school, but the difference is she’s actually tremendously... ...

[ Coldplay performs Shiver on Morning Becomes Eclectic ] Ever since my first Apple computer and post dial-up connection could make the stream, I've been tuning into Nic Harcourt's excellent radio show " Morning Becomes Eclectic " on L.A. radio station KCRW. He is that rare DJ - like John Peel and Steve LaMacq - who can make you want to buy a band's record before you even hear any of their songs. The format of his show included performance spots (an early inspiration for our own Soundcheck series), and he helped break artists such as Jeff Buckley, Arcade Fire, Coldplay and Damien Rice in the U.S. The British expat has decided to leave the show and his position as the station's musical director at the end of the month to pursue " other activities in movie, television, voice over work, advertising and the Internet" according to his press release . Harcourt will retain a 3-hour spot on Sunday nights at the station. The station says the search is on for a new Morning Becomes Eclectic host. Here are a few more videos from the show: Arcade Fire Cat Power PJ Harvey ...

One of the biggest elections in U.S. history took place this week, and so did the most awesome episode of "Rock of Love Charm School." Come on, how often do you get to see legendary producer Miles Copeland teaching a train wreck group of girls how to manage a rock band? Poor girls had no clue. Copeland, former Squeeze manager, worked with his brother Stewart’s band, The Police, as well as The Clash, The Sex Pistols, John Cale, and countless other classic musicians. Those were the days. What destroyed good music? Global warming, trans fat, or Hannah Montana? Let’s not place blame. Music’s coming around again. Check out these five albums. Some are worthy of multiple listens. Then visit my blog, Take Me to Your Music, at blogs.townonline.com/planetmusic.  Heavy rotation   Elbow – "The Seldom Seen Kid" (Geffen Records) Here in the U.S., Elbow has never really caught on. Perhaps the most underrated rock band outside of its birthplace of Greater Manchester, UK, Elbow has received critical acclaim ever since the band began making music more than a decade ago. When you have fans that include Radiohead, Blur and U2, you’re doing something right. This year, the band won the Mercury Prize, which is awarded for the best album from the UK. Past winners include: Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, PJ Harvey, Pulp, and Portishead. Elbow snatched the award with "The Seldom Seen Kid," the band’s fourth studio album and first since 2005’s "Leaders of ...

EA The Thing Friday, Nov. 14 Ruby’s BBQ ( ) $10 advance, doors at 7 pm [ info ] | [ tickets ] One doesn't usually associate Elgin smoked sausage with Scandinavian free jazz, but after Ruby's Barbecue's 20th anniversary bash on November 14, it might not seem like such a stretch. Longtime Austin avant-garde jazz promoter Pedro Moreno and Epistrophy Arts have brought The Thing to the Lone Star State several times over the last several years, and each occasion is, if not momentous, at least a rousing good time. For The Thing – Mats Gustafsson, saxophones (Sweden); Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, contrabass (Norway); Paal Nilssen-Love, drums (Norway) – are far from only providing listeners with heady improv brew. Their long-form suites incorporate not only original high-octane energy improvisation, but also tunes from sources as diverse as Afro-American jazz iconoclasts Albert Ayler and Don Cherry as well as punk/alt rock figures like the Sonics, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lightning Bolt, PJ Harvey and Cato Salsa Experience (with whom they recorded 2007's Two Bands and a Legend on Smalltown Superjazzz). Gustafsson has long seemed an heir apparent to German reedman Peter Brötzmann, but he takes a more nuanced approach to full-bore sonic projection, one that has aligned him with experimentalists like Merzbow and Jim O'Rourke. The Thing have frequently brought guests into the proceedings – in addition to the aforementioned CSE, they've also worked wi ...
