Related Articles Response to emotional expressions in generalized social PHOBIA and generalized anxiety disorder: evidence for separate disorders. Am J Psychiatry. 2008 Sep;165(9):1193-202 Authors: Blair K, Shaywitz J, Smith BW, Rhodes R, Geraci M, Jones M, McCaffrey D, Vythilingam M, Finger E, Mondillo K, Jacobs M, Charney DS, Blair RJ, Drevets WC, Pine DS OBJECTIVE: Generalized social PHOBIA involves fear/avoidance, specifically of social situations, whereas generalized anxiety disorder involves intrusive worry about diverse circumstances. It remains unclear the degree to which these two, often comorbid, conditions represent distinct disorders or alternative presentations of a single, core underlying pathology. Functional magnetic resonance imaging assessed the neural response to facial expressions in generalized social PHOBIA and generalized anxiety disorder. METHOD: Individuals matched on age, IQ, and gender with generalized social PHOBIA without generalized anxiety disorder (N=17), generalized anxiety disorder (N=17), or no psychopathology (N=17) viewed neutral, fearful, and angry expressions while ostensibly making a simple gender judgment. RESULTS: The patients with generalized social PHOBIA without generalized anxiety disorder showed increased activation to fearful relative to neutral expressions in several regions, including the amygdala, compared to healthy individuals. This increased amygdala response related to self-report ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 1 day ago
The role of common factors in residential cognitive and interpersonal therapy for social PHOBIA: A process-outcome study. Psychother Res. 2008 Oct 10;:1-14 Authors: Hoffart A, Borge FM, Sexton H, Clark DM This study examined the role of common factors in residential cognitive therapy (RCT) and residential interpersonal therapy (RIPT) for social PHOBIA. Eighty social phobic patients were randomized to 10 weeks of RCT or RIPT. Patients and their individual therapists completed process and suboutcome measures weekly. The ratings were examined using linear mixed models. Most patient-rated process variables showed U-shaped (quadratic) patterns over the course of treatment. Therapist-rated alliance increased linearly. Therapist-rated first-week alliance and empathy predicted improvement in social role security over the course of therapy. The weekly fluctuations in common process predicted subsequent fluctuations in suboutcomes in seven of 10 possible cases, whereas suboutcomes predicted process in four cases. The results support the causal role of common factors. PMID: 18846473 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] ... Source: slashdot.org --- 38 days ago
In memory, I have never seen the left this scared about anyone on the right before. Yes, I said "scared." How else to explain this sort of hatred? How can you hate her? Her face is "offensive"? And this is just the tip of the iceberg. It's pure venom out there.Palin said nothing objectionable, other than political lines that at least half the country agrees with. Oh right, she took some sarcastic jabs at The Obama. None shall criticize Him, for He is Good. Biden can criticize McCain, because, well, he's just plain old McCain, not The McCain. Snark and meanness are acceptable from the left, because the left is on the side of goodness, light, and virtue, forever and ever amen.I figured this would happen but it is so much more pathological than I anticipated. It's the most remarkable thing I've seen in politics for a long, long time. They know that Palin did great, they know that she could make Obama lose Pennsylvania and Ohio and Colorado and other states -- and therefore the election. They are completely shell-shocked by the events of the last week and the only thing they can do in response is Hate.Cross-posted on <pudge/*>. ... Source: www.fark.com --- 6 days ago

Hi all, After an unconscionably long time of avoiding the dentist, due to a virulent dental PHOBIA, I went to the dentist today. Fortunately, the news was mostly good - the lovely, kind dentist said she was amazed at how good my teeth were given how long I have avoided seeing a dentist. Of course, I didn't get a clean bill of health. I have two cavities, two sealants (?), and one tooth that needs a root canal. And need a heck of a cleaning, which, frankly, I am dreading... ... Back in June, while visiting the romantic garden of my friends Len Porter and and Peter Goldblatt, I confronted a chronic weakness I would have to overcome. Call it Fear Of Flowers. I've justified it for years despite abuse from esteemed colleagues (just ask Nina Totenberg). I've even gone to great lengths to intellectualize it; consider this excerpt from my book, Plant This! : As for choosing plants by their flower -- well, given the fickle nature of beauty, I trust this ornamental feature least of all...Which is not to say I'm perverse enough to covet a garden without bloom. But when you balance their capacity for transcendence with their utter unpredictability, flowers can break your heart. Obsessing over them is much like throwing yourself into an unstable relationship that has no real substance only dizzying sex. Fine, so grow plants for their flowers... On the whole, I still stand firmly by the idea that flowers are the icing, not the cake. But that's still no excuse for a plant lover like myself to cop out when it comes to choreographing color. On this first day of October, with nary a leaf turning crimson or yellow, I'm more grateful than I've been all year for the flowers now in bloom. My hands down late season favorite is Leonotis leonuris. Other than its color (the same as my house), I also love the different stages of flowering on any given stalk. I spent a small fortune on a large Monrovia plant several months back; time ... Source: www.medicinenet.com --- 1 day ago

Clip Source: www.sciencenews.org Men with a common gene variation for "bonding" hormone report more marital strife There’s news for women who want a man who bonds instead of a James Bond: Scientists have identified a common genetic variation that appears to weaken a man’s ability to emotionally attach to one partner. The study, to appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , is the first to try to examine whether a hormone that encourages monogamy in animals plays a similar role in male humans. Before getting ideas about a DNA-fidelity test, though, women should consider that the study wasn’t designed to determine how much — or even whether — the gene in question is responsible for monogamy in humans. “We can’t with any accuracy predict effects on behavior,” says Hasse Walum of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm . “A lot of different things determine how happy you will be in a relationship.” But women can now wonder, “What about his vasopressin 1a receptor subtype?” Tags: genetics , commitment-PHOBIA ... Sen. Coleman's bi PHOBIA Posted by Joshua Lynsen , News Editor | Oct. 3 at 12:01 PM | Lynsen Oct. 3 at 12:01 PM I have to apologize to my fellow Minnesotans. It seems that I’m partly to blame for St. Paul not celebrating Pride month when Norm Coleman was mayor. Apparently, bisexuals such as myself unnerve Coleman, who’s now a U.S. senator. Bisexuality unnerves him so much that during his eight years as mayor, he refused to sign a proclamation celebrating Pride month because it would recognize bisexuals. Minnesota’s leading newspaper, the Star Tribune, noted in May 1994 that Coleman had no problem with gays and lesbians. But he wouldn’t put his signature on a Pride procla ... ...
