Congratulations to the Travelers Championship for its dual recognition in the inaugural Tournament Advisory Council awards presented at the PGA Tour 's annual meetings this week. The Travelers Championship was recognized for having the best presentation or look-and-feel of its on-site signage and branding at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell. Officials said the look transcends through all of the on-site signage and collateral materials and adds to the overall presentation, both on-site for spectators as well as the televised broadcast of the event. "Having a local title sponsor is our key for this PGA Tour event," tournament director Nathan Grube said. "The incredible branding extends from Travelers. They are so proud to sponsor this event. We are all so committed to taking this event to the next level, and we certainly see a huge sense of commitment and pride from Travelers as the title sponsor." The Travelers Championship received one of 11 awards presented by the PGA Tour's Tournament Business Affairs department, which evaluated each event and determined nominees and the eventual winners for each category. The Travelers Championship also was runner-up to the Valero Texas Open for best marketing and sales plan. The 2009 Travelers is June 25-28.   ...

Fran Marrello won the Connecticut Section PGA's final major Championship Wednesday but came up just short of becoming the player of the year and senior player of the year for the second year in a row. Marrello defeated Tony Kelley 4 and 3 to win his seventh Match Play Championship at Wethersfield Country Club and a $1,200 first prize. Marrello also earned 65 player of the year points, giving the Canaan CC pro a total of 321.99. But that was 5.59 points fewer than Kevin Giancola, who lost to Kelley in the semifinals. Kelley, who beat Giancola 1 up, won $900. Giancola, of Golf Quest Family Sports Center in Southington, clinched his fourth player of the year award Tuesday when he reached the semis. He had a sizable lead in the points race entering the season finale thanks largely to a second section Championship title July 30. Marrello, who beat Mike Martin via a concession in the semifinals, became the first to win player of the year and senior player of the year in the same year in 2007. He repeated as senior player of the year this year and also earned a berth in the 2009 PGA of America Senior Championship.   ...

Former Coastal Carolina University golfer Dustin Johnson finds himself re-evaluating his goals today for the remainder of his rookie season on the PGA Tour. After his exit from the FedEx Cup playoffs after The Barclays in late August, he sat down with his instructor and former college coach Allen Terrell and came up with a mission. Entering this past week's Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y., Johnson was 128th on the PGA's money list and needed to get inside the top 125 in the final six events of the Fall Series to retain exempt playing privileges on the PGA Tour next season. ...

Meet the 25 Nationwide Tour players who secured PGA Tour cards for next year. They include Colt Knost of Dallas, who played his college golf at SMU; Casey Wittenberg of Memphis, who nearly played his college golf at Texas (he went to Oklahoma State); and Texans Matt Weibring (of Dallas, of famous father) and Scott Gutschewski (Prosper). Their accomplishments were noted this afternoon at the TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, where Matt Bettencourt birdied the final hole to win the Nationwide Tour Championship . A nice birdie it was: Bettencourt medaled the 2008 money list. There were many good storylines in North Texas, but none quite matched the sentiment of what happened at the PGA Tour tournament with the long name that I still prefer to call the Disney . Davis Love III won — at the age of 44. He shot an eight-birdie, no-bogey 64 — his second 64 of the weekend. It was his 20th title on tour. Why is 20 magical? A lifetime exemption. I propose a toast. To the new guys. To the old. Here here. ...
