A former New England Patriots player from Connecticut was arrested over the weekend at Mohegan Sun casino, after he allegedly had “inappropriate contact” with a woman in the lobby, then punched her boyfriend in the face, a police report said. Tebucky Jones, 33, of 77 Ely Road in Farmington, was arrested at 1 a.m. Friday and charged with breach of peace, assault, and 4th degree sexual assault, according to a police report. Jones, a former NFL safety, is known for his role on the 2001 New England Patriots win of the Super Bowl, where he forced three fumbles. According to the police report, Jones had “inappropriate contact” with a woman in the casino hotel lobby early Friday, then got into a verbal exchange with her boyfriend, Nikolaos Papathanasiou, of 5 Rainbow Court in Quaker Hill. The exchange escalated “when the accused knocked over the female victim and punched Papathanasiou in the face, causing multiple injuries,” the police report said. At that point, a third man, Mark Chichester, of 29 Cottage St. in New London, stepped in and punched Jones. Papathanasiou was taken to William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, treated for his injuries and released, according to the hospital. Chichester was arrested for breach of peace. Jones attended New Britain High School, where he starred in football, basketball and track. He was drafted by the Patriots in 1998. BETHLEHEM — Since 2000 only one PATRIOT League football team has repeated as league champions — Lehigh in 2000 and 2001. Four teams have claimed the title over that period and Fordham won last year’s crown after finishing 1-5 in league play the year prior. Parity in the league has become the trend as a solid coaching corps and better recruiting has produced a better product on the field. “Teams have been fairly equal the last three years, for whatever reason,” said Colgate coach Dick Biddle, the dean of PATRIOT League coaches (13th season) and the only league coach in the last five years to advance a team in the Football Championship Series (formerly I-AA) playoffs. “Every game we played last year was very close, very competitive. “The key is the find a way to win those games.” Of the league’s seven head coaches, none enters this fall season with less than two seasons on their respective sidelines. “It’s not that long ago that this league was completely dominated by Lehigh and Colgate,” said Holy Cross coach Tom Gilmore, who’s led the Crusaders to back-to-back 7-4, 4-2 campaigns. “Then Lafayette emerged, then it was Holy Cross, last year Fordham. There are long and short versions of Andre Tippett’s story. The long version winds from his days in crime-ridden Newark, N.J., where he was cut from his high school football team as a gangly freshman. It continues through junior college and a stellar three-year run at the University of Iowa, where he led the Hawkeyes to their first Rose Bowl appearance in 22 years as an All-American. From there, he was taken in the NFL draft’s second round by the Patriots. Soon, Tippett was putting together a pro career that included leading his team to a Super Bowl and becoming one of the game’s most feared pass rushers. The short version of his story starts with the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Tippett lined up on the left side of the defense at linebacker. The ball is snapped. A few quick moves and a few would-be blockers later, some poor quarterback is crumpled to the ground. Both versions are impressive. Each features the same climax. Andre Tippett is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
