On the Lakers website, Mitch Kupchak discusses the Chinese point guard, a 2007 second round draft pick looking to make the team this season and begin his Laker career. Much of the interview centers around the contractual/legal complications involved with bringing Yue Overseas, which folks may or may not find interesting. But there are a few details worth noting: 1) The Griz apparently wanted Yue tossed into the deal that brought Pau Gasol to L.A. The Lakers, desiring to keep at least one of their Overseas draftees, limited Memphis' bounty to Marc Gasol. ...

Ah, what a difference a wink makes. Sarah Palin -- as coquettish as a 16-year-old cheerleader -- winked twice during last week's vice presidential debate. The GOP gobbled it up, with grunts of "atta gal!" The Democrats, not in the mood to be wooed, saw her flirtation with the nation as another ploy to avoid talking turkey. But it might interest the Alaska governor to know that winking is considered to be rude in many Asian countries, including India. According to one business guide for executives visiting India, "Winking will usually be perceived as either an insult or a sexual proposition whereas whistling under any circumstances is considered rude and unacceptable." Another primer for expats on nonverbal communication Overseas notes that the Chinese consider winking to be rude too.  In Nigeria, winking is a sign that children should leave the room. The Open University and British Council, together with Lion Television and the BBC have produced a special free DVD resource pack for schools. The packs aim to encourage inter-cultural dialogue and draws on three Open University/BBC FOUR TV series – African School, Indian School and Chinese School. The packs, which are distributed free to interested schools in the UK and Overseas, feature short video clips from the three series along with background information and a series of discussion points to raise questions and stimulate debate. How are school elections run in Africa, India and China? What are students thinking as they prepare for exams or represent the school in a dance competition? The aim of the pack is to support teachers and learners in efforts to become more knowledgeable about the issues facing schools outside of the UK. It will support teachers' continuing professional development, help to raise awareness of global development issues and to contribute to and support community development programmes. The packs form part of the British Council's Connecting Classrooms programme, which creates sustainable partnerships between schools worldwide to build trust and understanding between people in different societies and support young people's development as global citizens. Dr Sally Crompton, Head of the Open Broadcast Unit at The Open University, who commissioned the three series along with the BBC, said: "We produce some fant ...

Linda and I both took note of an ad spot running on local radio station KFOG . The CIA is, it turns out, recruiting employees. Curious, I went to the web page referenced by the announcer, and found this particular job opening for a ‘ Core Collector ‘ where you’ll “serve on the front lines of human intelligence collection Overseas for the National Clandestine Service” and must “must demonstrate the skills, abilities and personality traits necessary for the safe, secure, and effective conduct of clandestine intelligence collection operations Overseas.” You will be “focused full time on clandestinely spotting, assessing, developing, recruiting, and handling individuals with access to vital foreign intelligence on the full range of national security issues” and “deal with fast-moving, ambiguous, and unstructured situations by combining [your] ‘people and street smarts’ with subject matter expertise and a knowledge of foreign languages, areas, and cultures.” Count on “long, irregular hours,” and stressful situations. As for requirements, you’ll need to “complete a thorough medical and psychological exam, a polygraph interview and an extensive background investigation.” A second language is useful, especially Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Indonesian, Korean, Pashto/Pashtu, Persian, Russian, Turkish, or Urdu.
