Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure wherein the uterus of a woman is removed completely. This intervention is usually performed in women with cervical cancer. About 600,000 hysterectomies are performed in the US each year and about 50% of these also include oophorectomy, which is the removal of the Ovaries. The ... ...

Removing the Ovaries with a hysterectomy is common. In fact, of the 600,000 hysterectomies performed every year, half of them include the removal of the Ovaries - the reason behind it being cited as cancer prevention (of the Ovaries). The fact is that our Ovaries are important to our health - even when we are beyond child-bearing age. They have been linked to heart attack prevention, lessening risks of stroke and even dementia. A recent WedMD story found that "researchers concluded that there is an "urgent need" for appropriately designed trials to determine if ovary removal is justifiable for all women who have hysterectomies. For women at high risk of ovarian cancer, including those with a strong family history of the disease and those with a genetic predisposition to get the cancer, the benefits of ovary removal are clear, says UCLA professor of obstetrics and gynecology William H. Parker, MD. But for the vast majority of women who don't have these risks, removal of the Ovaries during hysterectomy may not be justified, he says. Parker's own 2005 study of hysterectomy patients between the ages of 40 and 80 with an average risk for ovarian cancer found no survival benefit associated with ovary removal at any age, and a survival disadvantage associated with the practice up until the age of 65." For premenopausal women , the decision of whether to undergo a hysterectomy - removal of the uterus - is a challenging one. To make things more complex, added pressure to decide whether to remove the Ovaries can arise — a decision that researchers say relies more on the preferences of the woman or her surgeon than on evidence-based medicine. Prophylactic oophorectomy is the medical term for removal of healthy Ovaries to prevent the potential risk of developing ovarian cancer later in life. read more ...

Sua sponte and en banc : In Extremely Rare Occurence Court Moves to Rehear Case of Canadian Rendition Victim Maher Arar | Center for Constitutional Rights : August 14, 2008, New York – The Second Circuit Court of Appeals issued an extremely rare order that the case of Canadian rendition victim Maher Arar would be heard en banc by all of the active judges on the Second Circuit on December 9, 2008. For the court to issue the order sua sponte, that is, of its own accord without either party submitting papers requesting a rehearing, is even more rare. “We are very encouraged,” said CCR attorney Maria LaHood. “For the court to take such extraordinary action on its own indicates the importance the judges place on the case and means that Maher may finally see justice in this country.  As the dissenting judge noted, the majority’s opinion gave federal officials the license to ‘violate constitutional rights with virtual impunity.’  Now the court has the opportunity to uphold the law and hold accountable the U.S. officials who sent Maher to be tortured.” The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) case seeks to hold accountable the high level administration officials responsible for sending Maher Arar to be tortured and interrogated in Syria for a year – a practice known as an extraordinary rendition.  Based on faulty information, Mr. Arar was detained as he was changing planes at JFK airport on his way home to Canada from a family vacation. A Ca ...
