Related Articles [Daily practice along the guideline for prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis. Fracture Risk assessment with japanese guideline.] Clin Calcium. 2008 Aug;18(8):1084-8 Authors: Hosoi T The diagnostic criteria of Osteoporosis in Japan is comprised of low bone mineral density and presence of fragile fractures as Risk factors for further fractures. In addition, the importance of differential diagnosis is emphasized in this criteria. The Risk factors for fragile fractures independent from low mineral density and the presence of fragile fractures were included in the criteria for pharmacotherapy in the 2006 edition of guideline for prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis. These factors include smoking, excessive alcohol, and familial history of femoral neck fractures. It would be a research question whether the removal of lifestyle-related Risk factors are related to the reduction of fracture Risk. PMID: 18677044 [PubMed - in process] ... Related Articles Clinical Risk factors for osteoporotic fractures in Brazilian women and men: the Brazilian Osteoporosis Study (BRAZOS). Osteoporos Int. 2008 Jul 3; Authors: Pinheiro MM, Ciconelli RM, Martini LA, Ferraz MB The Brazilian Osteoporosis Study (BRAZOS) is the first epidemiological study carried out in a representative sample of Brazilian men and women aged 40 years or older. The prevalence of fragility fractures is about 15.1% in the women and 12.8% in the men. Moreover, advanced age, sedentarism, family history of hip fracture, current smoking, recurrent falls, diabetes mellitus and poor quality of life are the main clinical Risk factors associated with fragility fractures. INTRODUCTION: The Brazilian Osteoporosis Study (BRAZOS) is the first epidemiological study carried out in a representative sample of Brazilian men and women aged 40 years or older with the purpose of identifying the prevalence and the main clinical Risk factors (CRF) associated with osteoporotic fracture in our population. METHODS: A total of 2,420 individuals (women, 70%) from 150 different cities in the five geographic regions in Brazil, and all different socio-economical classes were selected to participate in the present survey. Anthropometrical data as well as life habits, fracture history, food intake, physical activity, falls and quality of life were determined by individual quantitative interviews. The representative sampling was based on Brazil ... Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov --- 41 days ago

Menopause. 2008 Mar-Apr;15(2):282-9 Authors: Sandini L, Pentti K, Tuppurainen M, Kröger H, Honkanen R OBJECTIVE: Self-reported data are usually used for the evaluation of the effects of hormone therapy in population studies. We examined the agreement between self-reported hormone therapy use and nationwide prescription data from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland to evaluate the accuracy of self-reports. DESIGN: The 10-year questionnaire of the population-based Kuopio Osteoporosis Study was sent in 1999 to 12,562 women aged 57 to 67 years; 11,377 women who completed questionnaires were eligible for analysis. We asked women whether they had been taking estrogen hormone therapy as a gel, plaster, or tablet for the treatment of climacteric symptoms or Osteoporosis and if the answer was yes, to specify the brand and duration of treatment for each year from 1994 to 1999. RESULTS: Among the 11,377 women, 3,105 (27.3%) reported the use of an estrogen-based preparation in 1996 to 1999, and 97.6% were confirmed by Social Insurance Institution of Finland to have been prescribed hormone therapy during that time. In these women the median duration of use was 32 months (range, 1-41), according to Social Insurance Institution of Finland data. An additional 1,738 women had been ... Related Articles When continuity of care breaks down: a systems failure in identification of Osteoporosis Risk in older patients treated for minimal trauma fractures. Med J Aust. 2008 Apr 7;188(7):389-91 Authors: Kelly AM, Clooney M, Kerr D, Ebeling PR OBJECTIVE: Minimal trauma fractures may be the first indication of Osteoporosis. Our aim was to determine the proportion of patients who underwent bone density testing for Osteoporosis of those with a minimal trauma wrist fracture treated in the emergency department (ED). DESIGN: This observational retrospective cohort study used explicit medical record review and scripted telephone interviews. SETTING: EDs of three metropolitan hospitals in Melbourne in 2006. PARTICIPANTS: Patients aged 50 years and over who were treated for wrist fracture due to minimal trauma. Data collected included demographic details, fracture details, causes of injury, any bone density testing and any Osteoporosis-related medication change. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The proportion of patients who underwent bone density testing in the follow-up period. RESULTS: 131 patients were studied; 83% were female, and the median age was 71 years. No patient was referred by an ED or fracture clinic for bone density testing (95% CI, 0-3.5%). Telephone follow-up data were obtained from 91 patients. Of these, 28 reported having bone density testing after their fracture, of whom 14 (50%; 95% CI, 32%-67%) were found to have osteoporosi ... Source: www.medicinenet.com --- 33 days ago
