Steven Spielberg will likely start production on a long-rumored Abraham Lincoln biopic in 2009. All he needs now is one of those sweet one-word "Gimmie an Oscar" titles, like "Amadeus" or "Ray," so I threw together some suggestions -- feel free to use any of these free of charge, Spielberg: "Lincoln" "Abe" "Honest" "Linc" "16" "Shot" "Beard" "Ab" "Raham" "Hat" "L" "Beardnhat" "A" "Notwashington" "" ...

rating: 3/5 by: Epinions Author ulsterscot - Yes, I know the main point of this movie was to get movie bozo Jim Carrey nominated for an Oscar in a more serious role. Obviously it failed in that. It did get an Oscar Nomination for one of the most annoying female characters I've ever seen on... ...

You'll have to wait until tomorrow for my review of the teriffic "Iron Man,'' but in the meantime a few thoughts about Terrence Howard , who gets second billing in the posters for the summer's first blockbuster but has practically nothing to do as the military liason to Robert Downey Jr.'s billionaire weapons manufacturer Tony Stark. Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow have large, well-written roles, while Howard doesn't even get angry when Tony accidentally downs one of his planes, nearly killing the pilot. Howard's saddest scene comes near the end, when he looks at a spare Iron Man suit and wistfully says, "Maybe next time.'' What might as well be the motto for his recent career. Since receiving an Oscar Nomination for "Hustle and Flow,'' Howard has cashed in with unrewarding second-banana roles in the likes of "Get Rich Or Die Tryin','' "Idlewild,'' "The Hunting Party'' and "The Brave One'' as well as such cinematic horrors as "August Rush'' and "Awake.'' Maybe next time. ...

Oscar-winning hit arrives on DVD with deleted scenes, screen tests, gag reel and a commentary track Not quite as good as that best picture Oscar Nomination would have you believe, but entirely undeserving of its harsh backlash, "Juno" retains all of its tart, foul-mouthed tone on DVD, where it's ready to take its place in the 2007 Accidental Pregnancy Film Festival alongside the differently charming, but no less romantic and funny, "Waitress" and "Knocked Up." ...

Photo-llustration: Columbia Pictures (McLovin), Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar) Not that it could ever repair the damage done by his inexplicable defeat at February's Academy Awards, but Christopher "McLovin" Mintz-Plasse's incendiary performance as himself in last summer's Superbad has earned him a Nomination for an MTV Movie Award in the Breakthrough Performance category. If there is truly any justice in this world, he'll win this one and Javier Bardem, overcome with guilt, will man up and mail him the trophy he really deserves . Our literary fashionista heads for the movies and slips off a snow-covered road on an unoriginal drive through academia. The trailers for the movie Smart People, from director Noam Murro, shrewdly play up the producer connection between this movie and the well-written, finely paced Sideways. The draw here for fans of Sideways is Thomas Haden Church, who won an Oscar Nomination for his turn as the fianceé looking for a last fling. For anyone younger, it's... ...

Out of consideration for another boring-ass, unkillable civic ritual, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will push back its 2008 Oscar Nomination announcement to Jan. 22, 2009 — two days after the presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. The quadrennial event apparently has a century-and-a-half of media seniority over the Oscars, thus giving the Academy little choice but to bump its usual Tuesday press conference to Thursday. But wait — it gets worse. Complicating matters further, the new schedule makes for one of the fastest turnarounds in Oscar history: Gil Cates, Bruce Vilanch and godforsaken company have a mere month to put together the Feb. 22 awardscast — the earliest ever, we're told. Considering how this year's will-they-or-won't-they cancellation patter doomed Cates' handiwork from the start, we hope Academy president Sid Ganis will again consider going head-to-head with the inauguration. Every extra day counts (especially for studio campaigns), and even the president-elect will probably be impatient to find out if this might be Kate Winslet's year for Revolutionary Road and/or The Reader . The Oscars are the real American politics, aren't they? Inauguration Day uproots Oscar noms [THR] ...

As Raymond Shaw muses in 1962’s “The Manchurian Candidate,” “It’s a terrible thing to hate your mother.” Terrible, yes. But in this case it’s completely justified. When Mrs. Iselin isn’t playing cards or arranging flowers, she works as a double agent for the Communists as part of a plot to overthrow the U. S. government. She manipulates her dimwitted senator husband and turns her own brainwashed son, Raymond, into an assassin. Spooky. Angela Lansbury earned an Oscar Nomination for her chilling turn as the master spy. ...

I’ve said before that I’m finished with politics. After the 2000 election, I was so devastated that I curled up inside a cave on the Pakistan border, growing a beard and muttering Bush hatred. You see, I invented Osama bin Laden. In fact, the plans for 9/11 were stolen from my dreams using a holographic brain scan the Taliban purchased from the CIA. True story. However, lately I’ve been smelling something sweet on the breeze, and for once it’s not wafting from Al junior’s blunt. Pundits are suggesting that a brokered Democratic convention could lead to an Al Gore Nomination. Please excuse me while I talk my chubby down.Okay, I’m back. I had to use my Oscar to bludgeon my chubby into submission. Now, as I was saying, if neither Obama nor Hil... Read more ...

Indie shingle ThinkFilm has picked up the domestic rights to Marina Zenovich’s polarizing documentary Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired . The picture made quite a stir at Sundance this past January with its objective exploration of its mercurial subject. The film examines the infamous 1977 statutory rape trial that forced the often brilliant filmmaker (and occasional child molester) into self-imposed exile to France in lieu of jail time. It is a story of sex, lies, corruption, and myth that is still a matter of discussion 30 years on. Not coincidentally, ThinkFilm president Mark Urman served as Polanski’s publicist for much of the 90’s and was actually interviewed for the film. Though his segments were left on the cutting room floor, I’m sure having the inside track to the rights of one of the year’s hottest docs more than made up for it. HBO is set to air the doc on June 9 with ThinkFilm handling the theatrical rollout beginning in New York on July 11. The film should hit your local art house theatre over the summer and home video in the fall. A pre-broadcast airing run in NY-LA back in March makes the picture viable for a possible Oscar Nomination at next year's awards. The Weinstein Co. holds international distribution rights. ...
