Photo: Sara Krulwich/The New York Times/Redux We wouldn't think of comparing ourselves to the spry young models introduced over at the Cut. (We're bloggers, not masochists.) Instead, we prefer a different type of physical-fitness competition: old people. (Example: When we go for a run, we take pleasure in passing septuagenarian joggers.) Which is why we found today's Times profile of Oscar winner Estelle Parsons so disheartening. The 80-year-old recently stepped into the role of Violet Weston in Tony-winning play August: Osage County , and, well, she makes us feel completely lazy and out of shape. Parsons is taking over the part from 68-year-old Deanna Dunagan — who cited (we swear) exhaustion as the reason for her departure — and the woman is a workout machine. We recommend stretching before you continue: She lifts weights and swims, she said, and has hiked the backwoods of her native New England for most of her life. She hasn’t smoked in many years and rarely drinks. She almost never eats red meat, save for the occasional lamb chop. She started practicing yoga about 30 years ago. Still with us? Ms. Parsons must navigate two sets of stairs (the stage depicts the Weston family’s sprawling Oklahoma house), smoke cigarettes, argue with pretty much everyone onstage, dance to an Eric Clapton song and verbally eviscerate 10 other characters in a family dinner scene. And breathe… In addition to her weight lifting and swimming (she swims ...

Photo: Getty Images Jim True-Frost is best known to fans of The Wire for his role as Roland Pryzbylewski, or Prez — the lousy cop turned empathetic teacher in Baltimore city schools. Now, True-Frost, a longtime member of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company, is on Broadway playing another lovable loser of sorts: Little Charles in the Tony-award-winning play August: Osage County . The actor spoke to Vulture about his new role, the intricacies of eating (and faking piano-playing ability) onstage, and how it felt when his Wire character finally came into his own. So, this is an early-morning interview, given that you're on Broadway every night until 11 p.m. or so. Actually, I just got out of an audition for a voice over for a radio commercial. But you're Prez and you're on Broadway! Do you need to be auditioning for radio? Obviously right now I'm doing great, but I'm not going to turn off the spigots to the other faucets because it all goes into the same well. I actually just did a Burger King commercial, which fell into my lap because Spike Lee was directing it. He was a big fan of The Wire and he requested me for this. I thought, It's a national campaign and might keep the baby in diapers for a little while . We have a baby coming in November. Congratulations! So … the play. We saw it last night and couldn't speak for a while afterward. You were really affected, that's great. It's funny because it has such a horror-show quality, but a ...

Photo: Joan Marcus Big news! Variety reports today that Pulitzer Prize–winning, Tony-earning, all-around-awesome play August: Osage County is being adapted for the big screen . Playwright Tracy Lett is attached to write the screenplay, and Jean Doumanian Productions ( All the Real Girls , Bullets Over Broadway ) and Steve Traxler will produce. But who will play the Westons? "So many actors and stars have come to see it on Broadway, and we've gotten inquiries," Doumanian tells Variety . "People are enthusiastic about the film version." Maybe they'll follow Ang Lee's lead and cast the actual theater actors ? But who should play matriarch Violet: Tony winner Deanna Dunagan or 80-year-old phenom Estelle Parsons ? You know, we don't even care. We really wanted to see this thing again anyway, and compared to the cost of seeing it on Broadway, movie tickets will be a steal. —Lori Fradkin 'Osage County' set for bigscreen [Variety] ...
