Old news: The winning bidder for the Star-Bulletin shirt offered here last week was photographer Dick Schmidt, who retired from the staff of the Sacramento Bee a few years ago. Schmidt explains: Trivia: I set my $71.72 bid in fond recognition of my time on the S-B photo staff (1971-1972.) That time for me, though short, remains [...] ...

Filed under: John McCain , 2008 President , Media As a follow-up to the earlier stories from DK and me . From the McCain campaign blog: The only similarity between the two stories is a cross in the dirt, but it is hardly an unlikely coincidence that there were practicing Christians in both Russia and Vietnam, or that in the prisons of those two Communist countries the only crosses to be found were etched in the dirt, as easily disappeared as the Christians who drew them. But those desperate to discredit Senator McCain's record will have to impugn his fellow prisoners as well. Orson Swindle, who was held as a prisoner of war along with McCain, tells the McCain Report that he heard this particular story from McCain "when we first moved in together." That was in the summer of 1971 , Swindle said, though "time blurred" and he couldn't be sure. He said it was some time around then that the Vietnamese moved all "36 troublemakers" into the same quarters, where they "talked about everything under the sun." Checkmate. And apologies I'm sure are welcome, but likely not forthcoming from the usual suspects. In fact Andrew Sullivan, who started this mess, doubled down earlier today and offered up a stirring oratory in defense of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth: And why are we not allowed to ask these questions, when they relate to one of the most important questions anyone can ask about a president: the question of integrity? John Kerry, at the 2004 Democratic National Convention that nominated him for president, made much of his "band of brothers" -- veterans who had served with him in Vietnam. Tonight, as the Republican National Convention kicked fully into gear following its session that was abbreviated on Monday because of Hurricane Gustav, a small group of John McCain's military comrades were introduced (and loudly applauded) -- men who shared imprisonment and torture with him at the infamous Hanoi Hilton during the war in Vietnam. McCain wasn't there; he arrives Wednesday in Minnesota's Twin Cities for the gathering that will officially make him the GOP's presidential nominee. Instead, introducing the POWs was one of their other fellow captives: Orson Swindle (who shared a cell with McCain). Swindle's name may ring a distant bell for some -- in the 1992 presidential campaign, he served as a spokesman (as much as anyone could) for third-party candidate Ross Perot. -- Don Frederick ... ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain will deliver the following remarks as prepared for delivery to the 109th Annual Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States National Convention in Orlando, Florida, today at 9:00 a.m. EDT: Thank you all very much. National Commander George Lisicki, thank you for the kind introduction. Ladies Auxiliary President Virginia Carmen, Incoming National Commander Glen Gardner, Incoming Ladies Auxiliary President Dixie Hild, Adjutant General Gunner Kent, Executive Director Bob Wallace: I thank you all for the warm welcome. I am honored to be in the company of all my fellow members of the VFW, and especially anyone here who might hail from Post 7401 in Chandler, Arizona. I'm proud to count many of you in this room as personal friends, including my good friend retired Marine Corps Sergeant Major Paul Chevalier of New Hampshire. And there's another gentleman here I know you'll want to welcome. He's as fine a friend as a man could have in a tough spot, Lieutenant Colonel Orson Swindle of the United States Marine Corps. All of us take pride in being members of this great organization. After its founding in 1914, the VFW served many of the more than four million American veterans of the First World War. Today just one of those veterans survives, a man of 107 named Frank Buckles. Frank lives in West Virginia. And I have a feeling that word will reach him if we all join in a round of applause for the la ... Source: www.freerepublic.com --- 17 days ago
I called Orson Swindle, a fellow POW who is campaigning for McCain, to ask him about it. I recall John telling that story when we first got together in 1971, when were talking about every conceivable thing that had ever happened to us when we were in prison Swindle told me a few minutes ago. Most of us had been kept apart or in small groups. Then, in 1970, they moved us into the big cell. And when we all got to see each other and talk to each other directly, instead of tapping through walls, we had 24 hours... ... Source: www.realclearpolitics.com --- 17 days ago

David Kusnet was chief speechwriter for former President Bill Clinton from 1992 through 1994. He is the author of Love the Work, Hate the Job: Why America's Best Workers Are Unhappier than Ever. “This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word "victory" except when he's talking about his own campaign,” Sarah Palin said of Barack Obama in her acceptance speech Wednesday night. So here’s another word-count: Palin used the word “reform” at least seven times in her remarks. And she didn’t use the word “Republican” even once. To borrow a phrase Palin used, “News flash”: The McCain-Palin ticket sounds like it’s running not as Republicans but as members of Ross Perot’s Reform Party. Back in 1992, with voters recoiling against the first President Bush, Perot’s Party preached a right-wing populism that bashed Big Government but was patriotically pro-military and also embraced the cult of the corporate CEO. As it happened, Palin’s Alaska was Perot’s strongest state that year--he won 28 percent of the vote. His running mate was a former prisoner of war, retired Vice Admiral James Stockdale. His volunteer coordinator was Orson Swindle, who played a prominent part in this year’s Republican convention. And his rhetoric was echoed by Palin and quite likely will also infuse John McCain’s acceptance speech Thursday night. Unlike the tongue-tied Stockdale, Palin was endearing and eloquent, and i ...
