Type: Residential with acreage Lot size: 70.62 acres Location: Mt. Vernon, OR Price: $850,000 MLS No.: 2804311 If you're in the market for a picture-perfect Oregon getaway, look no further. This very special spot , which is completely self-sufficient (it's solar-powered with two developed springs) combines the best of both worlds : It's conveniently located about five miles outside Mount Vernon but is refreshingly private, bordered on two sides by thousands of miles of public land (the Aldrich Mountain range ). The property itself, 70.62 timbered acres, provides ample opportunity to view the surrounding splendor of the Strawberry Mountains as well as the John Day Valley.   Outdoors enthusiasts will be right at home here. Wildlife is abundant (this is located in one of Oregon's top hunting units ), as are trails for hiking or horseback riding . Venture to the edge of the property and you'll find yourself on a dramatic rock outcropping that reveals the entire John Day Valley below. Breathtaking!            Then there's the home, a custom-built two-story board-and-batten pine home packed with personal touches . You won't find the caliber of construction very often. Seven hundred square feet of covered decks on two levels take maximum advantage of the mountain and valley views. Inside, pine floors are accented by several large juniper support beams , which lead to a large loft upstairs. ...

An Oregon man was arrested Monday at a campaign event for Hillary Clinton after he attempted to pass his business card and speak gibberish to the candidate's husband and former president. And to top it off, the man arrested lives on McCain Road. Seriously. According to police reports, Thornton Massie Tice, 63, was arrested following the Clinton rally in Astoria. After Tice tried to hand Mr. Clinton one of his cards he began "talking weird." Police then arrested and questioned Tice who, as it turns out, had a warrant for a parole violation. It's worth noting at this time that Tice himself is running for president of the United States. Tice told The Daily Astorian this morning that he is an independent candidate running for the presidency of the United States. He said he wanted to give the business card to Clinton because he wants the Clintons to serve on his Cabinet if he is elected. ...

Oregon State still has eight games left on their schedule, and until those eight games are completed and the Selection Committee selects the field of 64 teams, we won't know where the Beavers are headed for post-season play. But in the meantime, it's always interesting to see where different media outlets project the Beavers to go for the NCAA Regionals. The most recent release comes from Baseball America, who predicts the Beavers are headed to Baton Rouge, Louisiana as a #3 seed.  The chances of Baseball America correctly picking the site where OSU will go is very unlikely, but the prediction of Oregon State going as a three seed is more meaningful to me. It means that Oregon State is in the 32-48 range, which seems pretty accurate after the loss to Utah Valley State. In the grand scheme of things this doesn't mean much, but it's nice to see how we currently stand. GO BEAVERS! --JB-- ...

After several months of sitting back and letting Democrats Steve Novick and Jeff Merkley go after each other, Republican incumbent Gordon Smith has jumped into the fray in the Oregon Senate race , launching attacks on both of his potential Democratic challengers, but saving special censure for Merkley. Smith made his TV debut with " Get It " (subscription) , a positive ad touting his record in the Senate as an "independent." Seated in a wood-paneled office with soothing music playing in the background, Gordon tries to separate himself from the "partisan fighting, gridlock" of the nation's capital. "That's Washington’s answer to your problems, not mine. I get it," he insists. "No matter who our next president is -- him or her -- I'll find common ground for the change we need." The ad closes with the tagline, "Common ground for the common good." This tone of niceness didn't last long, however. Just days after "Get It" went on the air, Smith released an ad attacking both Merkley and Novick. " Change? " (subscription) challenges the notion that either Democrat will be a "candidate of change." An announcer accuses Merkley of breaking fundraising rules which he helped set and cites an article from the Oregonian calling Novick the "liberal champion of government spending." Along with attacking his would-be opponents, Smith also attempts to do something in this ad that it may be difficult to pull off -- ...
