garylian writes "Berkley Breathed has announced that he has drawn the final comic containing the greatest penguin ever, Opus. The author is now going to write children's books. For those of you in your mid-30's and older, you remember Bloom County as a staple of the comic pages in a similar time frame as Calvin & Hobbes, and that time was probably the greatest the daily/Sunday comics have ever known. From running for the vice presidency to impersonating Michael Jackson, from gracing a ton of t-shirts to being one of the weirdest stuffed animals ever, from rocking in a heavy metal band "Billy and the Boingers" to cleaning up Bill's hair balls, Opus was perfect for that time. And Bloom County would have been perfect during the Bush 2 years Now, I'm going to pull out all my old Bloom County books and read them. After I dig through some boxes and find my old Opus dolls. I wonder what my kids are going to think of them." Read more of this story at Slashdot. ... Source: www.moreover.com --- 8 days ago

My son Matthew loves comics. He said to me the other Sunday, "Dad, you know the unfunniest comics? 'Doonesbury' and 'Opus.'" Well, you don't expect a kid to get "Doonesbury," but "Opus"? I agree that "Opus" is terrible, and always... ... Source: www.charlotte.com --- 7 days ago
Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is retiring, leaving a hole in Sunday comics pages after nearly 30 years because he wants to save his strip's main character, Opus, from being dragged down in the current political climate. The last strip of "Opus," the beloved, large-beaked penguin, will run in about 200 newspapers nationwide Nov. 2. Amy Lago, comics editor of The Washington Post Writers Group, said Breathed will pursue other interests, such as writing books and screenplays. Starting and stopping popular strips is old hat for the 51-year-old, who lives in Santa Barbara, Calif., and has a children's book, "Pete & Pickles," due out next week. The writers group unveiled his "Bloom County" strip in 1980; he went on to win the Pulitzer for editorial cartooning in 1987. He ended that strip in 1989 and the same year began the Sunday-only strip "Outland," which he quit in 1995. In 2003, he launched "Opus." Breathed describes his creative combination as part outspoken filmmaker Michael Moore, part gentle "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz. "It isn't a comfortable creative combination but it's probably what gave my cartoons whatever distinction they had for 30 years," he wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press. His comics have long lampooned current events, such as the "Star Wars" space defense initiative in the 1980s and the supposedly corruptive influence of heavy metal music. In recent strips, Opus has reflected on h ... Source: blog.newsarama.com --- 8 days ago
In an interview with Melissa Block on NPR’s All Things Considered yesterday, Berkeley Breathed talked about ending his current Sunday-only strip: Breathed says that he’s not usually sentimental about his characters. Still, he found himself “unrealistically emotional” about drawing the final strip, taking pains to make sure the penguin’s last pose was perfect. Creating Opus for the [...] ... Berkeley Breathed is pulling the plug on his comic “Opus” after Nov. 2 and on his career as a comic strip artist. The 5-year-old Sunday comic with a political bent, which appears in the Journal-World, stars the penguin from Breathed’s classic comic “Bloom County.” It is ending just before the presidential election. ... "Opus," the Sunday comic strip documenting the exploits of a big-nosed penguin by the same name, will appear for the last time on Nov. 2 because creator Berkeley Breathed has decided to stop drawing it, the Washington Post Writers Group said today. The syndicate is expected to release further details this afternoon. Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Breathed (also well known for "Bloom County") launched the Sunday-only strip in 2003. Bloom County began in 1980, and Breathed won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987. He quit drawing Bloom County in 1989, when the comic was running in nearly 1,300 newspapers, according to Editor & Publisher magazine. Shortly after that, he began drawing Outland, a Sundays-only strip featuring many of the same characters, but he retired it in 1995. The St. Petersburg Times hasn't decided how it will replace Opus in the Sunday color comics. ... Source: www.chronline.com --- 15 days ago
