It should be the perfect vehicle for the National Ballet of China. After all, in so many ways, Swan Lake resembles a Chinese ghost story. The evil magician; the enchanted, shape-shifting heroine, one thing by day, another by night; the blundering innocent who stumbles into the middle of the spell and falls in love with something not quite human; the misunderstandings and mistaken identities and impossible feats of physical bravura. ...

The Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe of China's Swan Lake is either sacrilege or a bracing slap to the face of classical ballet. I see no reason why it can't be both. Watching it performed at Covent Garden is like that moment in the first Batman movie when Jack Nicholson's Joker marches into the Gotham Art Museum and announces, "Gentlemen, let's broaden our minds...", before desecrating everything. ...

The Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe's Swan Lake is phenomenal and cheesy, sometimes both in the same breath. On the one hand, you get blurry storytelling, tacky effects and a corps de ballet on roller skates. On the other, you get performers doing the impossible – most spectacularly, that scene where the heroine dances, on pointe, on top of Wei Baohua's head. Once balanced, Wu Zhengdan kicks her other foot into a high extension. And then she does a backbend, her head level with her supporting ankle. The audience reacts with awed disbelief. ...

The McPherson Opera House received two sturdy additions Thursday morning. Construction crews lowered two, vertical, 48-foot steel beams into the east side of the building. The beams, made by Welco Services Inc., were raised, by crane, above the Opera House ceiling and then lowered into place through two openings in the roof. The black, steel beams were secured to the basement of the building and will serve as the right and left arm of the stage support cross. Project architect Andrew Steffes said a third, 50-foot horizontal beam will be moved into the Opera House next week and will connect the two beams placed Thursday. The horizontal beam will require two cranes and will be put into place on Aug. 21. Crews will move the beam horizontally through a window at stage level. A second crane will be dropped through an opening in the ceiling to pull the beam into the theater area and place it on top of the two vertical beams. Sutherland Street, from Main Street to Ash Street, will be closed to traffic during next week’s move. The resulting structure will help secure all of the pulleys, lights and electrical equipment needed for stage props. The building’s new east wall will support the back half of the stage equipment. The beams will also help support a side balcony that will House a proposed pipe organ. John Holecek, director of development for the McPherson Opera House Company, said the beams will be behind the proscenium wall and wil ...
