Google, Yahoo and MySpace formally launched the OpenSocial Foundation to garner support for the OpenSocial data portability effort. The group's goal is make sure that OpenSocial will remain open and free for developers or anyone else contributing to the specification . The Foundation has selected five of the seven board members to preside over the group's governance. They include: Google's David Glazer, credited with leading the OpenSocial API efforts; hi5's Anil Dharni; Flixter's Joe Greenstein, MySpace's Allen Hurff; and Yahoo's Sam Pullara. In an unusual move, and one that underscores the open nature of the group, the board will also include two community representatives, which will be selected by participants of the OpenSocial Foundation in the coming weeks. Want to vote for two OpenSocial community members? You need to sign up to join OpenSocial here and submit nominations for those seats here . For those of you who missed the first go-around last October, Google programmers launched OpenSocial in the wake of the success of the Facebook Platform. Facebook Platform didn't allow apps created on it to work on other sites when it launched in May 2007. Sensing an opportunity, Google programmers created OpenSocial APIs that enable programmers to write applications for multiple social networks. The three APIs offer access to a user's profile and their friends, as well as the ability to let their friends know what activities have tak ...

Social networking platform Ning announced support for the OpenSocial standard today. Thanks to this, developers can now easily create applications for the Ning platform. At this time, Ning already features 30 applications that users can embed into their profile pages, including support for file sharing with Box.net and poll creation from Polldaddy . One of the highlights of Ning's implementation of OpenSocial is that the widgets automatically adapt themselves to the branding and design of the individual networks. Sponsor Ning is a social networking platform that allows its users to create their own, custom social networks. Some of its high-profile customers include celebrities like 50 Cent and Ellen DeGeneres. For now, users can only add OpenSocial applications to their profiles, but not to their networks. This will change, however, once future versions of OpenSocial are developed, as Caroline McCarthy reports. By adding support for OpenSocial, Ning is joining a growing number of social networks that support this standard, including MySpace , hi5, Orkut, and Bebo. For developers, supporting OpenSocial makes good sense, as they can reach a far larger audience with an OpenSocial application than if they just programmed for a given network's own APIs. The only hold-out with regards to supporting OpenSocial is Facebook, though Facebook is also considering the option of opening up its development platform to other social networks in ...

Yahoo!, MySpace, and Google on Thursday officially launched the OpenSocial Foundation, which is intended to ensure the openness of Google's OpenSocial platform. "This organization seeks to ensure that OpenSocial will remain implementable by all, at no cost, in perpetuity," Dan Peterson, a Google product manager, said in a blog post . "This Foundation will also help nurture the real power behind OpenSocial: the community of developers, containers, and everyone contributing to the specification." The foundation has selected five of its seven board members, who include: Anil Dharni, director of products at social networking site hi5; David Glazer, director of engineering at Google; Joe Greenstein, CEO of Flixster; Allen Hurff, senior vice president of engineering at MySpace; and Sam Pullara, vice president of platforms at Yahoo! The final two slots will go to people selected by the OpenSocial community in the coming weeks, according to a Thursday blog post. Those interested in voting must fill out an application to join OpenSocial. Community members will nominate and select those two positions every year. MySpace's Hurff said in a separate blog post that "it is very important that the MySpace Developer Platform ecosystem can continue to innovate and collaborate in a communal and productive environment. Social networking site hi5 on Wednesday upgraded to the latest version of Google's OpenSocial platform. The OpenSocial 0.8 standard utilizes the RESTful API, which allows an application to retrieve and update friend and activity data from sites like hi5. It will allow developers to produce a wider array of applications for mobile and the desktop, according to hi5. San Francisco-based hi5, which has strong presence in Latin America, is the first social networking site to deploy 0.8, the company said. Google released version 0.8 in May and also added functionality enhancements and JavaScript API convenience methods, according to a blog post . In March, hi5 teamed up with other leading social networking sites to share their APIs with Microsoft in order to enable the exchange information like contacts. Also that month, hi5 orchestrated a hackathon utilizing the OpenSocial platform. ...

Social networking site hi5 Networks has just announced its delivery of the OpenSocial 0.8 standard, including a collection of RESTful APIs for building social applications across the web. OpenSocial--a set of common APIs for online social network applications developed by Google and several other social networks--has historically had its roots in JavaScript. The new RESTful APIs from hi5 are targeted to allow developers to choose their own development languages for their applications. Will this get a positive response? "The social web is a phenomenon we at hi5 clearly embrace and promote," said Akash Garg, CTO of hi5, in a statement. "Open, interoperable standards are essential to fostering the vibrant developer community that is making that vision a reality." The new RESTful APIs in the 0.8 standard are specifically targeted to let developers working with different languages to get and update friend and activity data from hi5, but similar data can also be retrieved from and updated to other OpenSocial platforms. hi5 has been pinning a lot of its hopes on mobile social applications. In late August, the company launched a global service for mobile device users. The 0.8 standard is partly intended to encourage integration of features such as instant messaging and presence with social networking applications. The number of options for people who want to develop social applications keeps getting larger. We recently covered Zembly's ef ...
