Some quotes from Mets General Manager Omar Minaya from the Mike and the Maddog radio program this evening; When asked if Ownership influenced his decision Minaya replied.... "I am the decision maker and it was 1000% my decision to fire Willie Randolph." When questioned about the timing of the firing after the team won 3 of 4 Minaya had this to say... "I made the decision Monday morning based on the cloud of uncertainty and the Willie watch that was going on this weekend" He continued... "The faces of the players from Friday to Sunday made me realize I had to make a change" Would you have done anything differently? "I don't see how I couldv'e done it differently" Asked to explain why Tony Bernazard was sent to Anaheim and was seen speaking to Jerry Manuel and gloating that Randolph would be fired when Bernazard and Willie didn't get along Minaya answered... "Thats just the perception, my staff takes trips with the team and Anaheim and Colorado was Tony's trips." Minaya added this interesting comment... "We invested a lot of time talking with Willie about baseball, myself and Tony, because Willie never managed. We'd spend hours meeting just the three of us and we'd go 'hey Willie what about this, hey what if that happens' Sometimes we disagreed, the only teams I've seen agree on everything were losing teams." Here are quotes that stood out to me... "It's standard procedure to fire a manager at the hotel room. I wanted to make sure that ...

"Oh God, let's get that." -Omar Minaya, in the SNY booth, 8/20/08. Bouncing ball hit to Carlos Delgado, who knocks it down. Minaya is in the booth talking to the trio of Gary, Keith, and Ron. He utters those words, and the trio erupts in laughter. Delgado recovers and makes the play. Minaya thanks him. Too funny. ...

Omar Minaya Press conference notes: - Omar Minaya said that he hadn't made the final decision to drop the axe (my words, not his) until Monday night and took full responsibility for the decision, emphasizing Willie was his hire, and this made it all the more difficult to fire him. He continued to underscore that this was his decision, seemingly distancing the Wilpons from this entirely. - He could not have made the decision on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, because he hadn't made the final decision until sleeping on it Sunday night. - The decision was made because the team is underperforming and has been since last season. - During the meeting on Sunday night between Omar and Willie at Shea Stadium, Omar told him he was going to come to a decision sometime during the road trip whether to retain him for the year, or fire him. He came to that final decision Monday morning after sleeping on it, and decided to meet the team in Anaheim to deliver the news personally. - Omar took full responsibility for the leaks that came out prior to the weekend detailing the plan of who would be fired, who would get promoted, etc. Minaya felt that those stories were also causing more distractions in the clubhouse and had created an unfair environment for all. - Omar explained that he never wanted to say "Willie is going to be our manager for the rest of the year" because if the Mets had lost 15 in a row, then what? (you can still fire him, dummy.) - Jerry Ma ...

It is truly way too early to label a team winners or losers at the trade deadline, says Tyler Hissey. Just ask Omar Minaya, who was applauded for landing Bartolo Colon back in 2002 when he was the GM of the Montreal Expos. Minaya, however, parted ways with three future stars—Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee and Grady Sizemore—as the Expos fell apart the rest of the way and failed to reach the playoffs. ...

From AP With John Maine on the disabled list, Oliver Perez (pictured) is scheduled to start Friday night against Florida on four days’ rest. The Mets need to find a starter for Saturday, perhaps rookie left-hander Jon Niese.... In other injury news, right fielder Ryan Church (post-concussion syndrome) was slated to work out before tonight's game, GM Omar Minaya said. The Mets are waiting for doctors to clear Church for a minor league rehab assignment. Second baseman Luis Castillo, on the disabled list with a strained left hip flexor, was scheduled to play a rehab game tonight for Single-A St. Lucie. ...

WASHINGTON - Ryan Church may be in Port St. Lucie, but that doesn't mean he's getting closer to rejoining the Mets. No Manny, no Griffey, no Bay, no Ibanez ... not even one lousy Luis Ayala or Arthur Rhodes. Get over it. Instead, look forward to watching Pedro Martinez take the mound tonight against the Astros, albeit briefly, as he will be held to somewhere between 70 and 80 pitches. As for the dashed trade hopes, it's not like Omar Minaya didn't try. The GM spoke candidly about his efforts during yesterday's conference call and I believe that standing pat was not the worst strategy. I think the Mets are going to be calling up a few of their kids to help out -- Jon Niese shined in his Triple-A debut on Wednesday and Daniel Murphy, a potent bat, was just promoted to New Orleans this week. And don't rule out Minaya grabbing someone off the waiver wire before Aug. 31, the last chance for a player to qualify for the postseason roster. ...
