Two days in Seattle won't solve the nation's addiction to foreign Oil but might be enough to give national leaders the ideas needed for an eventual cure. That's what Seattle-based Cascadia Center of Discovery Institute has in mind for its Conference on September 4-5 on Microsoft's campus in Redmond, Wash., "Beyond Oil: Transforming Transportation." Cascadia Center is encouraging the development of demonstration projects to show how technology and policy can merge to help the country move beyond Oil in transportation. ...

Sacramento, CA -Assemblymember Pedro Nava, Chair of the Joint Committee on Emergency Services and Homeland Security was joined by Environment California, Sierra Club California, and the Natural Resources Defense Council to announce opposition to renewed efforts by Congress and the President of the United States to open up the coasts of the United States to offshore Oil and gas exploration and drilling. The Congress is considering an energy proposal this week that places in jeopardy the coastline of many states, including California's. "We must send a loud and clear message to the Congress and the President that California does not want Oil and gas exploration and drilling," said Nava. "The California coast is a national treasure and is... more ...

A crowd of 500 key influencers from the private sector, government, academia and the media filled Microsoft's large meeting facility in Redmond for the Sept. 4-5 Conference organized by Discovery Institute's Cascadia Center, " Beyond Oil: Transforming Transportation ." Gripping presentations by former CIA Director James Woolsey, electric car systems entrepreneur Shai Agassi of Better Place ( pictured, left ), and Microsoft's sustainability guru Rob Bernard - plus groundbreaking vehicles on display, dozens of other great speakers and several high-level technical workshops - built a heady buzz and energized networking. Among the take-aways: U.S. national security is badly compromised by our dependence on foreign Oil - we need to develop an even greater sense of urgency around breaking the habit. Electricity and the second-generation bio-fuels now under development will have the ability to revolutionize transportation. Renewable energy sources must be fostered to make sure clean electric transportation can become a reality nationwide. Even so, electric engines represent an immediate improvement in tailpipe emissions. Cleaner, greener vehicles will still need infrastructure. A new transportation funding paradigm for roadway, bridge and transit projects is emerging, as the gas tax falls into permanent decline. More of the slack will be taken up, over time, through tolling revenue from variably-priced high occupancy and toll (HOT) lanes. The ...

ASPO-USA -- Record Oil prices have sent gasoline costs skyrocketing, and America's rickety reliance on Oil has claimed the electoral agenda and public attention. Yet, despite increased drilling, burgeoning demand continues to strain supply. "Domestic gas production in the U.S. has not been proportionally increasing with the dramatic increase in drilling because much of what's being found with drilling has very high production declines during the first year," commented Vince Matthews, State Geologist of Colorado and one of many prominent speakers at the 4th annual Association for the Study of Peak Oil & Gas (ASPO)-USA Peak Oil Conference in Sacramento, Sept. 21-23 . The picture for domestic Oil production is not much better as the U.S. Oil infrastructure is severely outdated and in need of serious rehab. "It takes millions of tons of steel to pull crude Oil out of the ground, transport it to refineries, and then move and store finished petroleum products to where consumers can purchase them. The average refinery in the U.S. is more than 80 years old," Matt Simmons, chairman of Simmons & Company International, warned. While consensus is building that America indeed faces an energy challenge, a shared sense of how to respond to the energy problem is not. Jeff Rubin, Chief Economist at CIBC World Markets predicts that, "over the next four years (by 2012) some 10 million vehicles in America will be coming off the road." Co-sponsored by the ...
