Odysseus' return from Troy dated

Odysseus (Latin: Ulixes, English: Ulysses) is one of the most famous characters in ancient Greek legends, not only for his exploits in the Trojan War but also because of long journey to reach home again afterward. Because Odysseus played such a central role in two of the most important epics of Greek mythology, it should hardly be surprising that the stories of Odysseus might influence later culture and religion. What's unexpected is how they might have influenced stories about Jesus. If it's true that Jesus' life was at least partially patterned after Odysseus', then at the very least the reliability of the gospels is seriously in doubt. Even the historicity of Jesus becomes more questionable. ...

Retracing the route of Odysseus, that cunning and capable mariner immortalized in Homer's epic poems, seemed like a noble quest back at the Flocafe in Piraeus, Athens' port. With one bottle of ouzo behind us and another just arriving, our band of six made the decision to head for Troy on the northwest coast of Turkey. From there we would follow the wake of Odysseus to Ithaca, his home island on the other side of Greece. We would visit lands where historians believe he called and look for evidence... ...

The home base for Homer’s “The Odyssey”, the island of Ithaca, was described thusly by Odysseus: Bright Ithaca is my home: it has a mountain, Leaf-quivering Neriton, far visible. Around are many islands, close to each other, Doulichion and Same and wooded Zacynthos. Ithaca itself lies low, furthest to sea Towards dusk; the rest, apart, face dawn and sun. You’d think that [...] ...

Ody promises not to eat off your plate. This line is named for my sister-in-law's cat Odysseus, who spent a few months in our house and graciously served as my model in return for his lodging. Set of four lovely, soft, double-layer cloth napkins refashioned from secondhand sheets and hand-printed with water-based inks. Blue, white, and red wide stripes with black cat print on the front, red on the back. Each measures approximately 12" by 7.5". Machine wash cold gentle cycle, line dry or on dryer's delicate cycle. Warm iron, if you feel like it. Great hostess gift, great gift for yourself.... Kick the paper napkin habit! As I am a woman, not a womachine, there may be slight variations in each napkin. **New York State residents: Please wait to recieve an invoice from me before paying so that I can calculate the correct sales tax (it varies county to county). If you would like to pay by personal check or money order, please let me know, otherwise the invoice will come through PayPal. Thanks. ...

Kyle Orton bows his head to pray during yesterday's loss to the Bucs -- a loss that is a part of a greater plan. (AP Photo) While questioning the very existence of an omnipotent God, I once asked a friend why such a God would allow suffering in the world. Her answer: God has a plan. We must accept that plan and have faith that His is a plan divinely wrought and beyond human understanding. Sub the word "God" for " Lovie Smith " here and you begin to have a good idea of why the Bears allowed the Buccaneers to come back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win with a field goal in overtime . Some fans (possibly those who were heard booing the team at various points of yesterday's game) would prefer to cast themselves as Job of the grandstands and wonder why Lovie Smith and Co. would scorn them so. Still others may wonder why, two weeks in a row, the Bears -- who are far-and-away the greatest team that has ever brandished the NFL logo on their uniforms -- could possibly lose late-game leads and, ultimately, both games. Think about it. Clearly Lovie has something cooking. After all, how can you have a storybook season if there's no story? To create and conjure that story, however, the team must overcome some major obstacles. Perhaps these doom-and-gloom Bears fans would prefer Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey" if Achilles and Odysseus would have just marched through Ancient Greece unscathed and unmolested. Not this fan. This f ...

Yesterday, we mentioned the fact that game designers often walk a fine line when figuring out how best to dangle a nice, looty carrot in front of their audience ; somewhat on the same subject (loot!), Roger Travis goes back to the Iliad and even further to illustrate some ancient roots of the same thing we see in modern MMOs: grinding, loot, and boss battles, oh my! And really, even that squad you're running end game content with harkens back to an older group of 'heroes': ... there's something we can call "polyheroism" in the Iliad . It's pretty much like a five-man group in WoW , or a six-man fellowship in LOTRO : Achilles is the DPS guy, Ajax is the tank, Odysseus is the rogue, etc. To enact a story about the meaning of excellence, you need to be able to compare heroes. Everyone loved Achilles, just like everyone loves a good, well specced champion. But some people like Odysseus better than Diomedes, just as some people would rather have a burglar in their party than a second DPS class. I'm not saying that RPG classes have the depth of epic characters (though you'd be surprised by how little depth epic characters actually have). I'm saying that one important function of characters in the Iliad and in MMOGs is to get us to think about how different versions of excellence relate to one another. Gear isn't quite the fundamental, all-pervasive mechanic in the Iliad as it is in MMOGs. But in its own way, it's actually much more importan ...

No surprise, we're thinking about states this time around. Could it be our interview with State by State editors Matt Weiland and Sean Wilsey? Or perhaps the newest Out of the Book film, State by State , available on DVD September 17? Most likely both. In the meantime, we've got plenty of original essays for any road trip — Michael Greenberg ( Hurry Down Sunshine ), Brendan Short ( Dream City ), Roger Martin ( Racing Odysseus ), and Diane Hammond ( Hannah's Dream ) — with a quick stop at Dave Boling's Q&A for Guernica . We're also excited about guest bloggers Craig Mod and Ashley Rawlings ( Art Space Tokyo ) and Selden Edwards ( The Little Book ). Canadian Grand Prix Formula 1 Racing - A Jaded Fan Returns to F1 Formula 1 had become a boring, high-speed mess for our scribe until he joined the car-crazed fans in Montreal. Can the screams of the Sirens, the smell of the crowd, and a populist driver named Kubica lure him back at the Canadian Grand Prix? In Montreal, the natives call the event "the formula." The red lights go off, adrenaline kicks in, streets downtown are closed off to party, and Ferraris appear as though spawning. Fans from everywhere flock to the cathedral of noise, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, on an island in the Saint Lawrence River, drawn there by the high-decibel song that always makes me think of Odysseus and his men lured by the Sirens in The Odyssey . It's a sound both intoxicating and dangerous, one you simply can't ignore. For Montreal's thirtieth Canadian Grand Prix last June, the song of the Sirens was not exclusive to the track. Downtown was rocking, too. Photo Gallery: Canadian Grand Prix Formula 1 Racing - Robert Kubica F1 Racing - Automobile Magazine Read More | Digg It | Add to del.icio.us ...

Finally, Obama’s Greek pillars in Denver seem to make sense. In Greek Mythology, Odysseus sought to gain entrance into Troy, so he cleverly had a huge wooden horse built in which he and Greek soldiers could hide. Tricked into believing the horse was safe and would bring them good luck, the Trojans dragged the horse into Troy --ignoring the protests of Cassandra, the Trojan princess. ...

It's a spooky time of year, but these author events are serious. From a screening of the presidential debates to a reading by Dennis Lehane (will Matt Damon be there?!) to an appearance by the PC guy (hobo-obsessed John Hodgman), things are hot in the literary world this month. Good thing, too—it’s getting cold outside. All we want is to curl up with a good book.
