Barack Obama’s top strategist said Friday that John McCain’s campaign manufactured a racial Debate when it accused Obama of “playing the race card” the day before. Strategist David Axelrod defended the Illinois senator, saying he was just being “self-mocking” when he told a Missouri crowd that Republicans would try to scare voters by saying he doesn’t [...] ...

by John McCormick Sen. Barack Obama's campaign released a letter today to the Commission on Presidential Debates that accepts their framework for three presidential debates and one vice presidential Debate. Campaign manager David Plouffe's language in the letter also seems to suggests it is unlikely Obama will take Sen. John McCain up on his challenge for additional town-hall-style debates. "Due to the late date of the two parties' nominating conventions, and the relatively short period... ...

What's going on at the Associated Press? First, it publishes an article about how the McCain campaign feels the New York Times editors are like a blogger " sitting at home in his mother's basement and ranting into the ether between games of Dungeons & Dragons ." Then, a few hours later, it publishes a piece about presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama being afraid to Debate McCain in a town hall format. Honestly, with fair and balanced coverage like this from America's leading wire service, who needs Fox News? (emphasis added throughout, photo courtesy Weekly Standard): Democratic candidate Barack Obama on Saturday backed away from rival John McCain's challenge for a series of joint appearance s, agreeing only to the standard three debates in the fall. In May, when a McCain adviser proposed a series of pre-convention appearances at town hall meetings, Obama said, "I think that's a great idea." In summer stumping on the campaign trail, McCain has often noted that Obama had not followed through and joined him in any events. Obama's reversal on town hall debates is part of a play-it-safe strategy he's adopted since claiming the nomination and grabbing a lead in national polls. Advisers to the Illinois senator, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss strategy, say Obama is reluctant to take chances or give McCain a high-profile stage now that Obama's the front-runner . For those unfamili ...

A letter from campaign manager David Plouffe: August 2, 2008 Mr. Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr. Mr. Paul G. Kirk, Jr. Commission on Presidential Debates 1200 New Hampshire Avenue, N.W. Suite 445 Washington, D.C. 20036 Dear Chairmen Kirk and Fahrenkopf: I am writing on behalf of Senator Obama to accept the Commission on Presidential Debates' framework for three presidential debates and one vice presidential Debate to be held in September and October. Senator Obama has designated Congressman Rahm Emanuel as our representative to meet with the Commission and the McCain campaign to review the specifics of the Commission's proposal, discuss any requested changes to that proposal, and resolve any issues left open by the Commission's framework. We will make our representative available at the earliest convenience of the Commission and the McCain campaign. Due to the late date of the two parties' nominating conventions, and the relatively short period between the end of the conventions and the first proposed Debate, it is likely that the four Commission debates will be the sole series of debates in the fall campaign. Consequently, we believe that finalizing the arrangements for these debates with promptness and certainty is in the interests of both campaigns and the American people. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. David Plouffe Campaign Manager ...

By Randall Rasmussen It looks like Barack Obama will pass on John McCain’s challenge of appearing in as many as 10 town hall-style debates. Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe [...] ...
