It’s a controversy involving a president and a would-be commander in chief. But the president, in this case, is an 18-year-old Pennsylvania high School student who claims he was forced to resign as head of his senior class because he skipped gym and left School to see Democratic presidential would-be Barack Obama. Colin Saltry, a Scranton High [...] ...

With basketball (and bowling) suddenly hot topics on the presidential campaign trail -- Barack Obama is even hosting a youth basketball tournament in Indiana -- check out video of Obama playing in high School: The New York Times reported that Obama "is a wily player of pickup basketball, the version of the game with unspoken rules, no referee and lots of elbows. He has been playing since adolescence, on cracked-asphalt playgrounds and at exclusive health clubs, developing a quick offensive style, a left-handed jump shot and relationships that have extended into the political arena." More recently, Obama took an impromptu 3-point shot...and made it. Take a look: ...

Sen. Barack Obama became the first presidential candidate to join MSNBC's Chris Matthews on the 2008 Hardball College Tour yesterday at West Chester University. The candidate spent the hour with Matthews as well as hundreds of students. The News Journal (of Delaware) describes the scene at Hollinger Field House as "dozens strong" two hours before the live show was set to begin, as many students waited for hours for a chance to attend. The News Journal notes a small Hillary Clinton gathering of "a pair of students" outside the venue. The Los Angeles Times' Don Frederick writes , "By its applause, shouts and a show of hands that host Chris Matthews asked for, the crowd at West Chester University near Philadelphia already was overwhelmingly in Barack Obama's corner." Obama took a well-received shot at "cable news" while answering Matthews question about what he "goes to bed laughing about." The Huffington Post has the video . ...

Barack Obama's campaign organization is in hot water with Joel Klein, the NYC School's Chancellor, after it produced a short film (it runs about 13 minutes) starring Bronx public high School students and teachers discussing race issues and Obama's campaign. The video was distributed online to generate revenue for the candidate's campaign and the page where the video is located features a prominent "DONATE NOW" button. The teacher prominently featured in the film is Jackson Shafer, and he defended the experience as an educational opportunity that got some of his students interested in politics. Dept. of Education regulations prohibit students from being filmed for promotional or political purposes inside School facilities. The Dept. is currently evaluating whether disciplinary action should be taken against School administrators. Jen Psaki, the spokeswoman for the Obama campaign, was unapologetic about the incident, calling it a positive experience for the kids and that no one associated with the production was aware that they were in violation of any rules. The campaign also declined to remove the video from its web site at the request of the Dept. of Ed. ...
