Filed under: Barack Obama , Ads , 2008 President The new Ad airing in West Virginia by Barack Obama is a :30 second spot titled "Service." It makes sure to let the Mountain state voters know about his "Christian faith." It's a typical bio-spot. It's supposed to make the voter feel warm and fuzzy about the candidate. And it is always a plus for political operatives when they can portray candidates as being like the voters. Like, for instance, sharing a common "faith." But for the candidate who told big money donors at a San Francisco fundraiser that rural Pennsylvania voters bitter over job woes often turn to God and guns; it is simply pandering in bad taste to invoke his "Christian faith" in a shallow attempt to connect. West Virginia voters will cast their ballots tomorrow, Tuesday, allocating 28 Democrat delegates.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Filed under: Barack Obama , Economy The RNC has a new Ad out comparing Senator Obama to President Carter based on his proposal for a windfall profits tax on oil, though I daresay there have been other reasons to think of Carter and Obama together recently . The script is simple, and the Ad is short and to the point. Save for a volume problem on the Carter clip, it's an effective Ad. Comparing to Carter is a no-brainer in this instance. The windfall profit tax is a punishment on "Big Oil" for alleged profiteering, a campaign promise that appeals to bitterness and resentment rather than hope and change. Unfortunately for the consumer, the reality is the policy proved to be a complete failure . The Ad points out that dependence on foreign oil increased as a result of Carter's policy. So in summary: good for the Hamas's of the world, not so much the Hummers. It's a good time for the RNC to make the Carter connection. His failed Hamas visit caps a career of failures, and has him fresh on people's minds. Plus, there are a lot of similarities to touch on. Their careers took similar paths. Carter was attacked on his inexperience and praised for intangibles. His was a campaign of change and hope: change from Republican leadership, hope for a more trustworthy government. The Jimmy Carter comparison is almost certainly going to be part of the General Election campaigning. I would expect this to be only the ...

Earlier this week, liberal advocacy group MoveOn.org announced the winner of a contest it had sponsored. Called "Obama in 30 Seconds," the competition sought an Ad that the organization could run in support of Barack Obama. Considering MoveOn's history with controversial ads and Ad contests, this go-round was actually quite tame. The winning spot looked like it could have been made by any campaign, and there appeared to be no controversy about the contest. It turns out that all was not as harmonious as it initially appeared. On Tuesday, MoveOn leaders e-mailed their membership with an apology. It seems that out of the 1,486 ads that were submitted for the contest, only one was rejected. The group apparently hoped the rejected video would never see the light of day -- the e-mail says they attempted to destroy it and complains, "While we refused to post it on our site, unfortunately the 'filmmakers' took it upon themselves to post the video directly on their website, violating very clear rules of the competition." The e-mail also calls the Ad "racist, ignorant, and downright wrong," and says, "We truly apologize for any offense this has caused. It certainly was not our intention to have something like this hit the web." The Ad is indeed racist, ignorant and downright wrong -- it's positively baffling, in fact, that anyone would be stupid enough to think it should run on television. But from the filmmakers' Web site , it appears ...

The Politico's Ben Smith has details of an effort started by some Jewish supporters of Barack Obama's; they're now raising money to buy a full-page Ad in the New York Times that will show "the U.S. Jewish community's widespread support for Barack." Thus far, Obama's had some trouble getting support from the Jewish community. Obviously, the Jewish community doesn't represent a major portion of the country's population, but Jews are a solid and fairly important part of the Democratic base. From personal experience (and obviously, this is anecdotal and in no way scientific) I know that I've seen some evidence that whisper campaigns against Obama being conducted mainly through viral e-mail are having an effect. At various points, I've heard Jews who are otherwise solid Democrats expressing concerns about Obama, in part because of the blatantly false information -- usually about his religion, his purported connections with the Nation of Islam and his stance toward Israel -- in those e-mails. ...

In a story out this morning, we detail how Barack Obama is looking to position himself as the anti-panderer in the presidential race. Obama has staked out a position opposing the suspension of the gas tax this summer, a move that John McCain and Hillary Clinton favor. Now Obama's campaign has released an Ad in Indiana, "Pennies," explicitly suggesting that Clinton is engaged in "political pandering" on the issue. "Another negative Ad from Hillary Clinton," an announcer says as the 30-second spot opens. "But here"s what she"s not saying. USA Today calls her three-month gas tax holiday 'political pandering.' It"s an election year-gimmick, saving Hoosiers just pennies a day." The announcer goes on to detail Obama's plan: "Take on price-gouging by oil companies. Tax their windfall profits. Invest in alternative energy. Give working families a permanent, thousand-dollar tax cut to help with rising costs." Watch it: ...

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama launched a new TV Ad in Lexington and Bowling Green this weekend that features an Illinois miner praising the candidate for his work on coal issues. "He came to southern Illinois and seen the devastation and the loss of the jobs in the coal industry," said Randy Henry, who is identified as a miner for 31 years. "Washington, D.C., is not listening to us. Barack understands it." The commercial highlights Obama's key accomplishment as pushing a provision in 2007 to provide $200 million for clean coal technology. The proposal -- sponsored by Obama and four others, including Kentucky Republican U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning -- was passed unanimously as an amendment to the 2008 budget resolution. This is Obama's second commercial in Kentucky, which holds its primary election on May 20. His primary opponent, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, began running her first commercial spotlighting her health care plans late last week. Clinton also prominently mentioned coal in her speech to Kentucky Democrats in Louisville Friday night. ...
