In 1997, Obama told top adviser Dan Shomon that he had never been south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Shomon told Obama that they should take a road Trip to southern Illinois — which they did. During the August 11 edition of NPR's Morning Edition , NPR news analyst Cokie Roberts asserted that Sen. Barack Obama's vacation to Hawaii, where he was born , "makes him seem a little bit more exotic," and characterized Hawaii as "a somewhat odd place to be doing it," despite also asserting, "I know that he is from Hawaii, he grew up there, his grandmother lives there." The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported on August 9 that "[a]fter delivering a campaign speech, Sen. Barack Obama's first stop on his Hawaii vacation was a visit to his grandmother's Makiki apartment, where he also lived during his youth." Roberts also criticized Obama during the August 10 edition of ABC's This Week , acknowledging that "Hawaii is a state" but stating that Obama's vacation there "has the look of him going off to some sort of foreign, exotic place." From the August 11 edition of NPR's Morning Edition : RENEE MONTAGNE (co-host): Now, Obama is spending the week on vacation in Hawaii. He's taking a vacation, he says, because it's, you know, good for his family, but is it a good point in the presidential campaign? ROBERTS: It's a little rough to be doing it at this point although, he -- you know, I think he is feeling somewhat secure, but Hawaii is also a somewhat odd place to be doing it. I know that he is from Hawaii, he grew up there, his grandmother lives there, but he's made such a point about how he is from Kansas and, you know, the boy from Kansas ... As Sen. John McCain aptly put it in The Washington Times, "Obama aims to win vote, not war." For the Illinois junior senator, the recent visit to the Middle East was a mere stage prop for advancing his radical political agenda. That he refused to visit U.S. troops in Germany because he couldn't bring the press with him is a case in point. ... Source: www.kitv.com --- 5 days ago

What is wrong with Cokie Roberts? Yesterday on ABC , she made a fool of herself by calling Hawaii "some sort of foreign exotic place." Roberts was mocking Obama for vacationing in one of the fifty states. Today, on NPR, she did it again. Thanks to reader, AS, for catching this -- and to Jed for putting it on YouTube: Seriously, Cokie is an idiot -- or someone who is freaked out by "exotic" people. NOTE FROM JOHN: So what exactly is so exotic and foreign about Hawaii to Cokie Roberts anyway? The fact that the state is populated with dark-skinned people? Seriously. This is one of the 50 US states and for the second day in a row we've had one of the top news networks in America suggest that is it is somehow un-American for American citizens to visit Hawaii. That's the clear intimation here, and I'd think the Senators and House member from Hawaii, not to mention the people, might have something to say about that. So once again, what does ABC seem to think that Hawaii is is some foreign exotic place? Last time I checked, Hawaiians, and lots of other Americans, made one hell of a sacrifice during World War II (it's called Pearl Harbor, Cokie). I think it's absolutely disgusting for us yet again to be playing this "who's more un-American" game and dragging down an entire US state along with it. ... Pollsters have done a number of measures about how much Barack Obama accomplished politically with the Trip abroad that was meant to deal with questions about his foreign policy credentials and is up to the job of commander-in-chief. CNN/Opinion Research said he didn't get a bump in general, and a Gallup survey conducted July 25-27 today says that, in specific, public opinion did not change on this question despite the Trip. And John McCain still reins dominant on both counts. Gallup says Americans by a 52 percent to 41 percent margin say Obama is up to the job of commander-in-chief compared to a 55 percent to 40 percent in June. Same goes with public views of how good a job Americans think Obama would do on the issue of the Middle East, terrorism, Iraq and Afghanistan. Fifty-one percent said he would do a good job compared to 48 percent, and that is one point tighter than June when the numbers were 49 percent to 45 percent. Seventy-six percent say McCain would do best as commander-in-chief compared to 52 percent for Obama, and 67 percent give the top marks on the terrorism issue to McCain compared to 45 percent for Obama. Iraq is a closer call, no doubt because a majority of Americans now say invading was a mistake. Fifty-three percent say McCain would do a better job compared to 48 percent for Obama. Obama's counterbalance is his strength against McCain on domestic issues, something highlighted also in a Pew Research Center poll ... Source: www.bnd.com --- 20 days ago

Barack Obama’s performance during his five-country tour of Europe and the Middle East last week was judged so successful that it has left some wondering whether the Democratic presidential nominee might be overqualified for the position of commander in chief. "There is a legitimate question of whether this job would provide enough of a challenge for someone of his talents," said a scholar of presidents and their resumes. "He looked so comfortable, so composed, so ready for the moment, and he made it look so easy while under the constant watch of the media, that you have to wonder if he is really ready to settle for the job of the president of the United States." After watching his easy rapport with numerous world leaders, political consultants — both Democratic and Republican — openly speculated that Obama, even if he accepted the electorate’s will to have him elected president, might simply use the office for a year or two as a stepping stone to a more prestigious leadership position. "The U.S. presidency still carries some symbolic value, but it isn’t what it once was, and I’m not sure it is ready to handle a young, ambitious man like Senator Obama," said one veteran consultant. Campaign analysts said they watched anxiously last week during the presumptive nominee’s overseas Trip, waiting for Obama to commit some gaffe — an unceremonious breach of etiquette during a meeting with a world leader, an unflattering pose during a pho ...
