*THE WALL STREET JOURNAL* SEPTEMBER 30, 2008 Oakland International Airport has ridden the wave of rapidly growing discount airlines to a 58% increase in passengers over the past 10 years. And now Oakland is in the vanguard of the next giant trend in aviation. Grounded flights. In November, Oakland will have 28% fewer departing seats than it had a year earlier, the largest decline among the nation's 50 biggest airports, according to OAG Analytical Services, which tracks airline schedules. AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc. have both decided to pull out completely from Oakland; other carriers are trimming flight schedules. *http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122272843070487981.html* ... SFO FLIGHTS UP; SAN JOSE, Oakland DOWN: The wobbly economy has delivered a bigger jolt to Oakland International Airport than to the other passenger airports in the Bay Area, with the East Bay Airport suffering a nearly 19 percent decline in daily departures and a net loss of carriers. The airports in Oakland and San Jose have both lost daily departures over the last 12 months, according to officials at the transportation hubs. "This is in keeping with what we are seeing around the country," said Rosemary Barnes, a spokeswoman for Oakland Airport. "Airlines have progressively higher fuel costs. People who used for fly quite often for leisure purposes no longer have the discretionary income to do so as much." The big beneficiary? San Francisco International Airport. That Airport can offer direct flights to a growing number of major cities that no longer can be found via the airports in Oakland and San Jose. Air carriers apparently want to focus more on the big jetliner hubs in a quest to curb fast-rising expenses such as fuel costs. That can strip smaller airports of some flights. "We have three new domestic carriers in the past year, Southwest, Virgin America and JetBlue," said Mike McCarron, a spokesman for San Francisco Airport. It also has added new international flights, he said. ... Source: counterterrorismblog.org --- 17 days ago
Co-blogger Daveed Gartenstein-Ross and Kyle Dabruzzi recently co-authored an interesting report on how firefighters can play an enhanced counter-terror role. His report reminded me of some preliminary research I had done on terrorist use of fire in the wake of the 2007 forest fires in Greece that killed 63 people and did hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage. Putting these two items together suggests another possible counter-terror role for fire-fighters. Fire Next Time? Fire is certainly capable of causing substantial damage either to specific targets and, if the conditions are right, as a virtual WMD. Several of the worst disasters in U.S. history were fires, including the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and the fires triggered by the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 destroyed entire cities. As recently as 1991 a firestorm in Oakland killed 25, did $1.5 billion in damage, and decimated 1520 acres within a major American city. Additionally, fire has the potential to trigger a cascading disaster. A fire might also lead to utility outages or reach new dimensions of scale if it reaches a sensitive site. Fire has some advantages as a tool for terrorists. First, it is a basic mantra among TV newspeople, “The camera loves fire.” As a means of garnering media attention, fire has tremendous potential. (Consider the endless footage of the fire at the Glasgow Airport from the summer 2007 terror plot .) Fire is also technically easy. ...

I'm not sure anyone on here even remembers me, but way back in May I was on here asking for help on planning a quick trip to Boston. It been over a month since I got back, but I finally got around to making a post on here. Not that anyone would really care to hear all of this, but I just had to share with someone........... I have never been to a more incredible city than Boston. I have been to ALOT of places in the US, and no place has made an impression like Boston did. Taking this trip alone, it was a little difficult, but not too bad. I was pretty well prepared. From the minute I got onto the subway at the Airport til the minute I left 2 days later, everyone was so nice and so helpful. Maybe I was just in the right part of town, I don't know. The hostel was pretty cool. It was clean and I felt safe walking to and from Fenway at night by myself, plus I met a huge array of cool people from all over the world there. NOW LET ME GET TO FEWAY ........ True, my team, the Oakland A's, totally sucked it this year, and did in fact, stay true to form while in Boston.....but I didn't care. I was at Fenway Park. I kid you not, I spent most of both games just sitting/standing/walking around with my jaw to the ground and taking hundred of pictures. It was just like a dream. I ventured into Fenway, alone, in head to toe Green and Yellow Oakland A's garb. I was wondering what kind of reaction I was going to get. Red Sox fans are insanely p ...
