Filed under: Handhelds A handheld device with two screens isn't nearly the radical notion it once was, but Microsoft Research 's Ken Hinckley seems to think there's still plenty of untapped potential with the idea, and he's actually taken things so far as to build an actual prototype device. As you'll notice, however, he didn't exactly build the so-called "Codex" from scratch, choosing instead to use two OQO Model 02s and folding case to hold 'em together. That, notably, lets him arrange the two screens into various positions that he calls "postures," like a laptop posture (which also lets him take advantage of the OQO's sliding keyboard), or a "battleship posture" that gives two people sitting across from each other their own screen. The big idea there being that the device adapts to different tasks, and actually uses the dual screens as two screens as opposed to one large screen. As should be clear, however, this is very much a research project, and there's no indication of an actual product in the offing, although, as Ken points out, there's not much stopping anyone from building their own -- you'll just have to bring your own code. Fans of the pocket-sized OQO UMPC have been understandably excited with the appearance of an OQO at IDF running the Atom processor .  It's a natural fit (pun intended) and reaction in the OQO community has been as expected.  Company CEO Dennis Moore has posted a comment at OQOTalk that points out that the single unit displayed by Intel at the IDF is just a technology preview and they are not announcing a Model so equipped: Folks -- Yes, indeed, that is an OQO prototype shown with an Intel(r) Atom(r) processor.  Intel is showcasing the OQO prototype in a couple of their keynotes and elsewhere at IDF because we have achieved by far the best performance with their processor in our technology demonstration. Note that this is not a product launch or announcement, but is a demonstration of what we think an Intel Atom processor should do in a product targeting users who need the ultimate in mobile productivity, and demonstrates all the areas where OQO has led the market for years -- performance, battery life, thermals, usability, design, and form factor.  While there are other small and light devices using Intel's Atom processor, none of them comes close to the performance and productivity we are showing with this technology demonstration. Intel selected OQO to collaborate on developing technologies that will further enhance the productivity of enterprise mobile workers and individual mobile professionals, and did so due to OQO's longsta ...

Microsoft Research's Ken Hinckley has unveiled a prototype device based on two OQO Model 02s running together. Named "Codex", Hinckley believes it's the future for gadgets as "dual-screen devices have become the subject of increasingly elaborate internet fantasies. Now, rumors about an Apple "Brick" device have stirred up dreams of future tablets , such as the alluring One Laptop Per Child v2.0 concept photos . Nintendo invested in their dual screen gaming device the DS Lite which has become very popular in all markets. Dual screen computing is common in businesses and is known to increase productivity so perhaps a dual screen device isn't a bad idea for the future? OQO, makers of high-end UMPCs, may have lost their CEO but they could be gaining a new Intel Atom based version of their touchscreen device. CEO Dennis Moore left the company this week, with company co-founder Andy Popell taking over the reigns; that seems to have loosened spokesperson Bob Rosin’s tongue. He appears to be suggesting that the prototype OQO Model 02 running an Intel Atom CPU spotted at the IDF conference back in August will, in fact, become a production product. After speculation started over the prototype 02, Dennis Moore had quickly stepped in to describe it as a “ technology showcase ” and not something that would reach production lines. His explanation was that it was a demonstration of two mobile-focused companies working together to target professionals. “OQO is very excited about their upcoming roadmap. Rosin mentioned the Intel IDF conference where they demoed a prototype Model 02 running an Intel Atom 1.6 ghz processor, but wouldn’t elaborate much more on pricing, timelines, etc. Don’t expect a product release this fall, though” GottaBeMobile At the time, we speculated that OQO was nipping rumors in the bud to preserve sales of the existing models, which could dive if would-be customers believed a new, Atom-powered version was just around the corner. We also suggested that OQO could be waiting until the dual-core Atom 330 CPU was available. Rosin’s apparent confirmation that an Intel-based OQO is a work-in ...

It’s been some time since OQO updated their eponymous UMPC, but a change in processor looks to be on the cards. UMPCPortal ’s Steve is at the IDF conference, and spotted an OQO device on stage as part of an Intel Atom presentation. Currently the OQO Model 02 offers a choice of VIA processors , the 1.2, 1.5 and 1.6GHz C7-M. That CPU itself has been superseded by VIA’s Nano processor , but there was no word from OQO on whether their next-generation of UMPCs would use the update or switch sides to Intel’s popular Atom CPU. As there has been no announcement or even rumor of an Atom-based OQO, it could be that the company is waiting for the dual-core N330 Atom to arrive before updating the UMPC. That chip has been delayed until Q4 2008. I had a good conversation with OQO 's Bob Rosin yesterday regarding their CEO changeover, product roadmap, netbooks, and more. Here is a quick run-down on our conversation: OQO is very excited about their upcoming roadmap. Rosin mentioned the Intel IDF conference where they demoed a prototype Model 02 running an Intel Atom 1.6 ghz processor, but wouldn't elaborate much more on pricing, timelines, etc. Don't expect a product release this fall, though. Andy Popell, their co-founder and new CEO, has been very involved in the day-to-day operations of OQO for as long as he's been with the company. It is a very seamless transition. Mr. Moore's departure was not unexpected. OQO will continue to be active in communities like GottaBeMobile and OQOTalk.com Regarding netbooks: according to Rosin, the "netbook craze" has actually been very good for them, bringing awareness of ultra-portable computing to a much wider audience. They do offer low-end priced Model 02's, but most of their customers opt for the higher end models. OQO's customer base tends to be very high tech and much more sophisticated about their computing needs. They also target a different segment of customers: those who need to walk and compute with both hands at the same time, something the netbook doesn't allow. Rosin pointed out that the netbook definitely has its place, but that OQO has never competed in that space anyway: the home, casual computing, kids, etc. Technorati ...

OQO has been a venerable name behind some of the best looking ultra-portable computers, however, if reports from Engadget Mobile are true, then the company has a lot of designing to do as they enter the smartphone foray. From the looks of the new phone, the styling takes a lot of cues from the Palm Centro and the latest Windows Mobile Treo 800w . The Model is supposedly dubbed the OQO G900, a Model descriptor that is borrowed from the Toshiba Portege G900 . With the OQO brand, I had expected a simpler Model number as their handheld computing devices had simple Model 01 and Model 02 descriptors as well as refined design. And a non-flush touchscreen? How very 1990s of OQO. I am not sure if the photo seen on Engadget Mobile is actually a photo of something from the OQO labs or if its a counterfeit headed for the Asian market. Comments [0] ...

I remember being in high school and being totally envious of smart kids like those from Amador Valley High School . They have formed a Robotics club to work on autonomous undersea vehicles, competing ( and placing!) against the likes of large universities from India, Japan, and the US. How cool is that! Powering their sub is an OQO Model 01, which according to the team helps keep the sub compact. They control the OQO wirelessly through Remote Desktop. We use the OQO as the main computer of our sub. The ability to run Windows XP has allowed us to focus less on drivers and the mechanics of image processing, and more on the actual implementation. The OQO has also enabled us to take advantage of Windows' Remote Desktop technology, making wireless debugging a simple task. The use of the OQO has also enabled us to miniaturize the sub, as it occupies a far smaller space than other, larger computers. OQO has provided us with countless hours of technical support, and several backup batteries which have been instrumental in our submarine, running the high-level mission control and image processing tasks. via Dennis Moore Technorati Tags: OQO , Robotics , Amador Valley High School Originally Posted On GottaBeMobile.com - THE Source for Mobile PC News. ...

With news yesterday that Dennis Moore, OQO's CEO, has moved on to greener pastures and that co-founder / chairman Andy Popell is taking over CEO duties, people are wondering what's happening at OQO. When will we finally see a Model 03? What effect, if any, are netbooks having on OQO's business? What are Mr. Popell's plans for OQO and how does that strategy differ from their former CEO? Does he see a broadening of the line or a continued focus on a single product offering? Will Mr. Popell integrate himself into the community like Mr. Moore did? People found it very refreshing to have that kind of access to the CEO and I'm sure Mr. Moore received much more benefit. I hope Mr. Popell sees the value and will continue that practice. OQO's Model 02 is hands-down the best ultra-portable device I've ever used. I took the Model 02 places I would never take a netbook, and it offered so much more functionality than a netbook: active digitizer, embedded EVDO, 64 gb SSD, pocketable, thumbable, and much more. That said, OQO has certainly got to be feeling the impact of netbook pricing, and it has to be causing them to adjust their strategy. If I were an IT manager looking to implement a Model 02 in to my organization, I would probably experiment some with netbooks first. Then, I would take a look at the pain points and see if a higher priced / more functional unit like a Model 02 would address those pain points. That kind of approach has to be ...
