Innovative PC-maker OQO created the uPC (ultra-portable computer) genre with their initial product, the Model 01. Now, they have refined and improved this initial accomplishment with the all new Model 2. Order now and save $150 with Promotion Code OQO-RBT . Also receive a free double capacity battery and free stronghold metal case! The evolution of the uPC space over the last two years has seen multiple competitors leapfrogging each other. Now, the OQO Model 2 sets a new standard for delivering high-performance and rich functionality in a remarkably small package. Its wealth of features and tiny size make it a uniquely fantastic product. The OQO Model 2 measures 5.6 x 3.3 x 1.0in (142 x 84 x 25mm) and weighs less than 1lb (less than 450g). (The exact sub-1lb weight can vary by configuration.) To get an idea how small this is, fold a standard A4 sheet of paper (regular copy paper) into a quarter of its size; that has about the same footprint as this PC. It has a warm, glossy consumer-friendly style -- a noticeable departure from the minimalist industrial look of the 01. The OQO Model 2 is powered by a 1.6GHz VIA C7M ultra low-voltage CPU that breezes through Windows XP, Windows XP Tablet, or Vista. Please note the digital pen is only standard on Tablet PC models. For XPH, XPP, or Vista models, the pen is sold separately. The 5" 800x480 outdoor-readable glossy TFT is nothing short of spectacular; it slides up to reveal the keyboard. The ...

The awards keeping piling in for OQO and their little pocket wonder of a computer, this time adding " The Stevie " award for 2008 Best Product to their list of accolades: OQO Inc., mobile computing innovator and creator of the world’s smallest fully-functional Windows Vista® PC, today announced that the OQO model 02 has been recognized with a Stevie Award in the Best New Computer Hardware category at The 2008 American Business Awards last week. Hailed as "the business world's own Oscars" (New York Post, April 27, 2005), The American Business Awards is the only national, independent business awards program honoring organizations of all types -- public and private, for-profit and non-profit, large and small. “The entire team at OQO is honored and excited to be recognized with this prestigious business award,” said Bob Rosin, senior vice president of sales and marketing, OQO. “This award recognizes the innovations that OQO has pioneered in ultra mobile computing and our commitment to category-leading engineering, product design, and quality. As UMPC’s and Mobile Internet Devices become mainstream, the industry continues to follow the lead that OQO has established.” OQO pioneered the ultra mobile PC category, and the OQO model 02 computer has been critically acclaimed as the leading product in this growing market. With the full functionality of Windows® XP or Vista plus embedded 3G connectivity in a form factor small enough to fit in ...

OQO is known as the king of ultra-portability with their Model 02 Tablet PC. It is pocketable, wearable, inkable, thumbable, dockable, and ultra-small. What can OQO do to improve their products? What are they doing right and where are they falling below expectations? Are there clear open opportunities that OQO should take advantage of? How is their customer service and product quality standing up? If you are not a OQO customer, what could they do to make you a customer? My opinions: OQO should take a clear lead in the 8.9" market left open by Motion Computing, and develop what we are all asking for: active digitizer support in the ultra-portable space. If there is a company poised to do it well, it would be OQO. As far as their current model: give us capactive touch, front / back webcams, SD support, increased RAM support, and continue balancing performance with battery life. clipped by: ag_is Clip Source: www.pcmag.com How to Buy a UMPC When first introduced on Microsoft's stage, a UMPC, or Ultra-Mobile PC, was supposed to be a super-portable and affordable solution for kids and adults alike. So far, only few have made this combination a reality. To be a UMPC, it should weigh under 3 pounds, because anything above that is considered an ultraportable. A physical QWERTY keyboard is a must, or else it's just an MP3 player. An optical drive is optional, but technically there shouldn't be one because you're trying to maximize portability. Finally, and most important, is price. Many have failed to deliver a truly affordable UMPC. An OQO model 02 or an HTC Shift that costs over $1,500 should not be considered a UMPC. Let's just say that the price tag should fall under $1,000. ...

Filed under: wireless hacks Our friend [tnkgrl] has successfully added HSDPA to a Vulcan Flipstart . The Flipstart is a palmtop Windows machine with 1.1GHz Pentium M, 512MB RAM, 30GB hard drive, and an EVDO option. Before starting, you need to come up with a mini-PCI Express HSDPA card. Instead of trying for a random bare mini-PCIe card on eBay, she purchased an unlocked AT&T Sierra Wireless Aircard 875U USB dongle. Inside of the dongle is a battery, SIM slot, and a mini-PCI Express card. The Flipstart lid comes off with just a few screws and the card drops into place. Even though the antenna isn't tuned for all the possible bands you should still get good signal most of the time. The best part of this mod is that it doesn't require any obvious modification, so your warranty will be intact... as far as anyone can tell. Embedded below is the video of the easy swap. In the past, she added HSDPA to the OQO 02, which definitely takes a lot more work . Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Bill O'Brien from InfoWorld provides consumers with an important tool, a buyer's guide. The Ultra Mobile PCs buyer’s guide looks at products from Amtek, ASUS, Fujitsu, Gigabyte, HP, MSI, OQO, Panasonic, Roan Digital, Samsung, TabletKiosk, Vye, and WiBrain. Classifying UMPCs is a challenge. Interestingly the author gives the Microsoft definition and disputes it by asking about a keyboard. No self-respecting UMPC user uses a keyboard. The power is in the pen. Further, the author says in the last paragraph on the first page, “they're not PCs.” The author is confused. Yes, UMPCs are fully functional PCs; not devices. In fact, UMPC stands for Ultra Mobile PCs. The ending of the acronym gives the clue. The problem with classifying the models in the guide is that several are not UMPCs; they are nice products but they have keyboards and do not operate with the Windows OS; some are devices and not personal computers. In fact, what the author calls notebook UMPCs are netbooks. I do agree that the MID definition from Intel suggest Linux is a key factor in comparing MID and UMPC; UMPCs are Windows-based and MIDs are Linux. Additionally, the consumer may consider a device different from a full PC. Instead, consider this guide a nice look at UMPCs, MIDs, and  netbooks. Anyway, let's get to the meat and potatos. These are the models discussed with the specifications and links to the manufacturer's website. Acer Aspire One Amtek iTablet 700 and 7 ...

This is about what I have come to over the last few days... I need (would like/want/ect....) is a HTC Shift sized unit with an active digitizer or a device that is a little bit bigger with a keyboard that I can actually use... You should see my hands crammed on to that HTC Shift keyboard! But really - the size of that is about perfect to keep around whenever I go to a meeting, and it's been with me the past few days just about everywhere I have gone! But, it's really missing out on the 'note taking' side of things. I 'think' I could even get past the screen rotation hurdle if I could rest my hand on the screen. And I really need to rethink that keyboard comment from above... If I had a device a little bigger, it might not make it to the same amount of meetings, or I would be almost back to a larger sized device. What do you think? I looked on Ebay at the LS800's the other night. Think that might do it for my companion note taking device if I get a 'regular' laptop as my main work computer? OQO? Something that has an active digitizer... Originally Posted On GottaBeMobile.com - THE Source for Mobile PC News. ...

Most folks have noticed AMD quite absent from the Low Voltage / Ultra-Low Voltage space, thus the reason you don't see them in the likes of Motion Computing's LE1700, Fujitsu's U810, Lenovo's X61, OQO's Model 02, and Dell's Latitude XT. With their most recent PUMA announcement, AMD is taking mobile computing seriously; and now with their upcoming Shrike platform, they plan to enter the thin and light space with a vengeance. Shrike is AMD's first substantiation of their Fusion architecture, which combine the GPU and CPU, along with southbridge, on to a single piece of silicon. Shrike will begin hitting the market the 2nd half of 2009. Considering how fast the ultra-portable space is moving right now, that is eon's away. It will certainly be good to see another player enter this space and will bring some good competition for Intel and Via. Shrike will not compete against Intel's Atom or Via's Isaiah. However, I wouldn't rule them out of that space, either. For those wondering, Shrike is a passerine bird that impales its' prey on thorns, which helps them to devour the flesh. Posted by: Hanners Posted: Fri 27th Jun 2008 GottaBeMobile have snagged a shot of an AMD presentation slide, detailing their 'Shrike' platform, which looks likely to compete in the low/ultra-low voltage market. Probably the most interesting part of this slide is that the 'Strike' CPU also contains an integrated graphics core - 'Fusion' anyone?
