The first day's account can be found here. To refresh your memory in this ongoing case, Judge Kimball has already ruled that Novell owns the copyrights to Unix and has practically dismissed all of SCO's claims. This portion of the trial is about Novell's counterclaims that SCO never paid them the money from the Sun and MS deals. What is to be determined in this trial is how much of the money from the deals were for Unix licensing (SVRx) and how much were for SCO's server technology (Unixware)." (Read on for the rest, below.) I was not sure where to post this, so I ended up here. Please direct me to the correct forum if this is the wrong place. I use the web interface to read posts and make posts. When I select NEW POST, it asks for my Novell login and password. I enter this and it redirects me to the forum site, but using HTTPS and I get an access denied message for the site. I simply change the HTTPS to HTTP in the address bar and hit enter and then it works. Not a big deal, but it is annoying. Thanks. ...

SCO and Novell have been in court this week trying to figure out how much SCO is supposed to owe Novell in royalties for its attempt to tax Linux. This is the money that SCO claims it doesn't owe Novell at all because Novell signed away its source code rights and can only claim royalties on binaries. ...

I guess the folks at Novell have taken to the idea that existence for its own sake, rather than thriving through innovation is the way they want to ‘roll’. Toward this end, the powers that be at Novell have, to the utter amazement and anger of the rest of the Linux world, cozied up to Microsoft, and made a ‘deal with the devil’ worthy of literary comparison. The company continues to deal with Microsoft under the auspices that the unholy alliance is somehow beneficial to the user base of both software bases. The deals that have been struck on the Novell side continue to mystify many, including this author, as Open Source means exactly that - Microsoft need not make deals with any company to see what the competition is doing.  For Novell, the removal of a threat of litigation, is something that, in the long run, must be the only motivation. It does not matter that any such litigation would be fruitless for Microsoft, it is the spectre of cash mountains being wasted on legal entanglement that must force Novell here. Sad that no one remembers the times when Novell truly owned the networking market, and the slogan around the Redmond campus was “The job is not done, until Novell won’t run’ as Microsoft was so envious of their position. I have created my first OES2 linux server, which appeared to work fine, even though I had to use the text interface becasue our Avocent smart switch put an display error message up slap over all the prompts in the gui. It is part of an existing Netware 6.5 OES2\eDir 8.8.2 network. I cannot get it to communicate with the Novell Communications Centre through our existing BorderManager server (although I have confgured the proxy and Firefox\internet works) so it has not yet been licensed in any sense. Can't find out what's wrong here. Then I mistakenly installed the OES2 components without spotting the fact that you nneed to do eDir first by itself, and during that process it gave errors during the NSS install, could not create NSS Admin object and NSS Volumes. Tried the installation again and this time got no errors but still no objects in NDS, and no NSS icon in the OES2 section of YAST. Its a single disc (hardware RAID 5) server with EVMS configured. Help! ...
