Longtime Notre Dame assistant football coach Joe Yonto, who worked under Ara Parseghian, Dan Devine and Lou Holtz, died Monday. He was 83. A university spokesman confirmed Yonto's death but had no details on the cause. Yonto was a high school coach before he joined Parseghian's staff in 1964 and was the Irish's defensive line coach for 17 years under Parseghian and Devine. ... Source: www.scout.com --- 15 days ago

In his 30-year affiliation with the University of Notre Dame, Irish Illustrated senior editor Tim Prister has known all the key figures within the school's athletic department. Many are worthy of the designation "Notre Dame man." Ranking right there at the top of that list is former defensive line coach and athletic administrator Joe Yonto, who passed away Monday at the age of 83 ... Source: www.freep.com --- 15 days ago

When Jimmy Clausen was recruited by Notre Dame out of Oaks Christian High School in California, fans of Fighting Irish football thought they'd found their savior. Spotlight : David Grimes G Rec Yds TD 2007 10 27 224 2 Also Returning : Richard Jackson, Duval Kamara, Robby Parris, Kris Patterson, Golden Tate, Sam Vos, George West Lost : Brandon Erickson, Nick Possley, Jake Richardville (graduation), DJ Hord (transfer), Barry Gallup, Jr. (position change) Gained : Brian Coughlin, Dan Franco, Michael Garcia, Christopher Gurries (walk-ons), Michael Floyd, John Goodman, Deion Walker David Grimes, Papa Smurf himself, is back in the spotlight. Grimes may not have the height or the speed to be an split end. But he does have the athleticism to be a reliable third option in the slot and occasional deep threat, at least at the college level. The best thing Grimes can be this year is a reliable pair of hands, as young starters Duval Kamara and Robby Parris' dropsies from last season were apparently still there in the spring. For this offense to be good, Kamara and Parris will have to become consistent and reliable pass catchers. The depth at this position is starting to become evident, if nowhere else than from the transfer of DJ Hord and Barry Gallup's move to running back. It will be interesting to see how often George West plays, or perhaps more accurately how many times a pass will come his way. Golden Tate will fight West for the number four receiver role. Tate showed great speed and leaping ability in his freshman year, but he needs to develop as a route runner to be truly successful as a wide r ... Source: www.wsbt.com --- 14 days ago

This is the first in a series of previews of this year's Fighting Irish football team. Unlike past years , this season I will be looking at each position individually. Spotlight : Jimmy Clausen G Att-Comp-Int Yds TD 2007 12 245-138-6 1254 7 Also Returning : Evan Sharpley Lost : Demetrius Jones (transfer), Darrin Bragg, Justin Gillett (graduation) Gained : Brian Castello, Nick Lezynski (walk-ons), Dayne Crist (freshman) As a fan of Notre Dame and the Cleveland Browns in 2007, I'm well accustomed to the platitude about the backup quarterback being the most popular guy in town. But Jimmy Clausen is the starter, and that's very unlikely to change this year. As will be a common theme with these position previews, Clausen is a year older and a year wiser, and that will hopefully translate to better success on the field. Much has been made of Clausen and Dayne Crist being only a year apart. But I don't see that as too much of an issue. If Crist sits out this year, he'll have four years of eligibility from 2009-2012. He can then serve as Clausen's backup for two years (Clausen's third and fourth year of eligibility), then start for two years. That's the way things are supposed to work. Quarterbacks should have a few years to learn the system while their predecessor is the star. College powerhouses shouldn't start from scratch with a freshman starter every four years. ... When Notre Dame came to town for the first time in 1979, the Fighting Irish got a heavy dose of Vol fullback Hubert Simpson, who rushed for 117 yards and four touchdowns. The final that day was 40-18 and marked quite an outing for the youngster from Athens (McMinn County). When he signed signing scholarship papers in 1976, he had made the following statement: "I heard Tennessee doesn't have a fullback. They have one now." Bravado aside, the limited time Hubert had at UT was filled with a great many ups and downs, with a great deal of time being spent in coach John Majors' doghouse before Hubert was dismissed from the squad before the 1980 season began. There were some good times, however. The big guy did carry 35 times against Kentucky in 1979, a mark that lasted until Johnnie Jones broke it in 1983. He seemed to enjoy the thud of bodies and the satisfaction of making the tough yards where angels fear to tread. On Nov. 10, 1979, the name Hubert Simpson entered the history books at Tennessee. Hubert Simpson, No. 32, led the way in a never-to-be-forgotten win over a legendary powerhouse of college football. He scored four touchdowns against Notre Dame. Can you believe it? COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF 2008 29 DAYS OUT: The 1979 season was a time of steps forward and steps backward. The Vols broke a three-year losing streak to Auburn in September, highlighted by Gary Moore's 98-yard return of the opening kickoff. John Majors had asked his team ...

Patti Buckley is trying to do more than build a program as Notre Dame’s varsity girls tennis coach. She’s trying make young people fall in love with the sport she’s loved for a while now. “We’re trying to get them to see that tennis is a sport you can play all year long and enjoy for the rest of your life,” Buckley said. This summer the coach launched the inaugural Notre Dame Tennis Clinic. It’s free of charge, and runs into dusk at the Parkway’s tennis courts. Right now there are about a dozen girls, but the coach hopes more players will come in future weeks. They practice ground strokes, serves and just hit the ball amongst each other. Partners can be hard to come by in the offseason, so Notre Dame’s players figure, why not play with each other? “I’m sure it’ll make us a closer team,” senior Francesca Romano said. “But we’re pretty close already; we’re just getting better.” The Jugglers are getting better. Buckley’s been coach for four years now, and last year they qualified for sectionals. Patti Buckley’s daughter, Jessica, is a sophomore and can see the team growing. Jessica said participating in an August clinic together can only help the team’s fortune in the future. “Playing against anyone will help you improve,” she said. “It’s just being out here and playing. It’s going to do us a lot of good.” As a prospective senior, Romano said it’d be nice to see the Jugglers program go beyond what last year’s team did. “More than any ...
