North Carolina's Kyle Shelton hit a solo homer in the sixth to tie the score and the Tar Heels scored three more runs in the seventh to beat Winthrop 4-1 on Tuesday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. Shelton and Garrett Gore each had two hits to lead North Carolina (43-9), which claimed its eighth straight non-conference win. North Carolina's Kyle Seager, who starred at Northwest Cabarrus, singled to lead off the seventh inning, and Tim Federowicz followed with a double to give the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead. Gore followed with a bunt single that Winthrop second baseman Aaron Bonomi threw wildly to first, allowing Federowicz to score North Carolina's third run. Seth Williams then singled to put runners on the corners, and pinch hitter Mark Fleury reached on an RBI fielder's choice to drive in Gore and give the Tar Heels a 4-1 lead through seven. Rob Wooten (5-1), one of eight Tar Heels to take the mound, earned the victory against Winthrop (22-31). Eddie Rohan and Bryn Henderson each had two hits for the Eagles. From the Asheville Citizen-Times, May 14, 2008: Tweaks needed, but Easley's budget priorities sensible Gov. Mike Easley has submitted his last spending plan to the North Carolina General Assembly. The term-limited Easley's final pitch contains no real surprises, pleasant or otherwise. It does, however, reflect eight years of Easley's priorities that will in time become his legacy - again, pleasant or otherwise. Easley's plan tweaks the two-year budget passed in 2007. It continues the governor's long-term emphasis on education, and makes another attempt at patching up the state's woefully dysfunctional mental health system. On education, the governor receives high marks for his efforts to bring teacher pay in North Carolina in line with the rest of the nation. His plan this year proposes a 7 percent increase in teacher pay. To fund the increase, the governor wants to hike the cigarette tax by 20 cents per pack, increasing it from 35 cents to 55 cents beginning Sept. 1. The national average is $1.14 per pack. Anyone who has kept up with the slow-motion train wreck that is North Carolina's mental health system "reform" knows it represents a crisis that has to be solved, and the governor proposes $68 million in spending focused on crisis care and facility improvements. Girls on Grapes is based on the premise that the more we know about wine and the more we taste it, the more enjoyable our hobby becomes! Meet us at Hops & Vines, 797 Haywood Road, West Asheville to join our fun and educational women’s wine tasting group! It’s already shaping up to be a fabulous group of women, dedicated to learn­ing about wine and HAVING A BALL! Currently, we are meeting the third Thursday of every month OR the fourth Wednesday from 7 to 8:30pm. Each month we’ll have a theme. We’ll taste, on average, 5 different wines during our tasting.
